7-8-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Variety reports that Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, The Wrestler) is the top choice by Marvel Studios and Sony to play Aunt May in their upcoming reboot of Spider-Man. The outlet reveals that an offer was made to Tomei last week but that she has yet to officially sign on. They also reveal that Marvel and Sony are hoping to round out the cast for the film, in order to craft a solid shooting schedule, before officially hiring a writer for the project. “It’s the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting,” Feige previously said about the film. “Just as we hadn’t seen a heist movie in a long time, or a shrinking movie in a long time, we haven’t seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie – only John Hughes could – but we’re inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us.” Tom Holland (The Impossible, In the Heart of the Sea) will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man film, but he will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in next year’s Captain America: Civil War, set for release on May 6, 2016. Jon Watts (Cop Car) is set to direct he film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 28. 2017. Sony Pictures will finance and release worldwide the next installment of the $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, in a film co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago.

This is really great casting. it is never wrong to add talent to a film and this a great choice being that she is an Academy Award winning actress. I really like how they have gone a little younger for Aunt May compared to Sally Field in the previous two Spider-Man films (Sally Field is 68 and Marissa Tomei is 50). It also makes sense simply because this new version of Spider-Man is going to start out at 15 years old so Aunt May has to look young enough to have a 15 year-old nephew and Marissa Tomei does that. Now with Aunt May being cast I'm curious to see who will plat Uncle Ben or if they even have and Uncle Ben because this new Spider-Man film won't be an origin story, but he could be used in flashbacks to help explain the story.

Columbia Pictures’ Goosebumps movie will arrive in theaters on October 16, and now you can get your first look at this fun monster mash with the Goosebumps trailer which you can check out below.  Directed by Rob Letterman, the big screen adaptation of R.L. Stine‘s classic YA books stars Jack Black, Amy Ryan, Ken Marino, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Jillian Bell and Ryan Lee. Upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach’s comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling “Goosebumps” series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong. “All the early monsters that are in the books [are in the film],” the real life R.L. Stine told ComingSoon.net in an exclusive interview last month. “They all come out, they’re all there. The real evil one is Slappy the Dummy, he’s there, the Abominable Snowman from Pasadena is there, and lawn gnomes, HUNDREDS of lawn gnomes. They’re great, they’re really good.”

I really liked this trailer a lot. At first when I heard about the film and being a fan of the books I didn't really know how it would go, but from the looks of the trailer this could be a really great film. I'm a Jack Black fan and seeing him in this type of is a great and different look for him. I've heard different opinions about the trailer, but after seeing it for myslef I'm actually looking forward to the film.

Following yesterday’s reveal of the film’s poster, Walt Disney Pictures has released The Finest Hours trailer. Take a first look at the upcoming real-life action-thriller in the trailer below. Directed by Craig Gillespie (Million Dollar Arm), The Finest Hours stars Chris Pine (Star Trek), Casey Affleck (Interstellar), Ben Foster (Lone Survivor), Holliday Grainger (Cinderella), John Ortiz (Blackhat) and Eric Bana (Deliver Us from Evil). The Finest Hours tells the remarkable true story of the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history. Presented in Digital 3D and IMAX 3D, the film will transport audiences to the heart of the action, creating a fully-immersive cinematic experience on an epic scale. On February 18, 1952, a massive nor’easter struck New England, pummeling towns along the Eastern seaboard and wreaking havoc on the ships caught in its deadly path, including the SS Pendleton, a T-2 oil tanker bound for Boston, which was literally ripped in half, trapping more than 30 sailors inside its rapidly-sinking stern. As the senior officer on board, first assistant engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) soon realizes it is up to him to take charge of the frightened crew and inspire the men to set aside their differences and work together to ride out one of the worst storms to ever hit the East Coast. Meanwhile, as word of the disaster reaches the U.S. Coast Guard station in Chatham, Massachusetts, Warrant Officer Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana) orders a daring operation to rescue the stranded men. Despite overwhelming odds, four men, led by Coast Guard Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine), set out in a wooden lifeboat with an ill-equipped engine and little, if any, means of navigation, facing frigid temperatures, 60-foot high waves and hurricane-force winds. The Finest Hours hits the big screen January 29, 2016.

I don't know how I feel about the trailer. One one hand it does get me excited for the film, but on the other the trailer wasn't that great and it's mainly because of the scene they showed with the woman and Eric Bana in the office and I thought that was totally unnecessary for the trailer. Like I said yesterday about the poster, the film reminds me a lot of The Perfect Storm and to see Disney do this type of film really gets me excited for the film and I can't wait to check it out.

Star Hugh Jackman took to Twitter today to reveal the new poster for Warner Bros. and director Joe Wright’s lavishly fractured take on Peter Pan.         I really like this poster. While it is an unoriginal design, it does a great job of showing us the core characters for the film. The trailer have shown that this will be a vastly different take on the story we all know and love. The cast of the film looks great and the film itself looks just absolutely beautiful and with this poster being released expect a new trailer sometime this week.

Courteney Cox has joined Paul Duddridge’s Mother’s Day cast, it was announced today by the film’s producers Danielle James and Amy Williams. The drama is currently in production; shooting in Los Angeles will be completed by the fall, with a planned 2016 release date. The cast includes Susan Sarandon and her daughter Eva Amurri Martino, Sharon Stone, Christina Ricci, and Paul Wesley. In Mother’s Day, interwoven stories of what it is to be a mom are tied together through the story of hip and happy single gal Rigby Gray, a rock photographer who is riding a career high when an unlikely and unexpected pregnancy forces her to turn her lens inward. As Rigby slowly comes to terms with what it might mean to change her life forever, she discovers with fresh eyes her own relationship with her estranged mother and, through a series of photographs documenting motherhood in all its varieties, she considers what it means to be maternal at all. Mother’s Day is a celebration of the unparalleled love between mothers and their children, the myriad of ways we connect in our modern day world, and explores the most important foundational relationship in our lives – the one with our mother. Courteney Cox is known for her roles on the highly-successful shows “Friends” and “Cougar Town,” which just wrapped its sixth season, as well as her iconic role in the Scream films. Cox is represented by WME and Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Mother’s Day is directed by Paul Duddridge in his feature film debut. Nigel Levy is co-directing. The script, written by Paige Cameron, is based on the concept by Duddridge. The film, which has been in development and production for the past three years, is being fostered by producers are Danielle James and Amy Williams.

This is pretty great casting. Courtney Cox's stardom has faded since the end of Friends, but she has been a great supporting character in everything she has been in since the show ended. Now if this film is going the way I think it is going then it could very well end up like Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve and be a ensemble film focusing on different stories that will eventually tie-in somehow and those films were absolute crap. Hopefully this film doesn't end up like that and this can actually be a decent film for all mother's to enjoy.
