2-2-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Since I didn't get to bring you news from yesterday I figured that I would combine today's and yesterday's news (3 stories from each day). So here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Lionsgate has officially announced that actress Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games, Pitch Perfect) has signed on to play the villain in the upcoming Power Rangers reboot. Banks will play the iconic Power Rangers villain Rita Repulsa, an evil witch previously imprisoned for thousands of years with plans to conquer Earth. Dacre Montgomery will lead the team as Jason aka the Red Ranger with RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and The Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott (The Martian, “Terra Nova”) as Kimberly aka the Pink Ranger, Ludi Lin as Zack aka the Black Ranger, and musician Becky G. as Trini aka the Yellow Ranger. Screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor) wrote the screenplay for Power Rangers, which is described as a modern reinvention of the long-running franchise. In it, a group of ordinary high school kids find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world. Original creator Haim Saban is acting as producer along with Brian Casentini and Allison Shearmur. Saban’s “Power Rangers” franchise is the brainchild of Haim Saban, creator and producer of the original “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” hit series that launched in 1993. Following its introduction, “Power Rangers” quickly became the most-watched children’s television program in the United States and remains one of the top-rated and longest running boys live-action series in television history. The series follows the adventures of a group of ordinary teens who “morph” into superheroes and save the world from evil. It is seen in more than 150 markets around the world, translated into numerous languages and is a mainstay in the most prominent international children’s programming blocks. 20th Century Fox previously released two feature films, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie in 1995 and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie in 1997. Set to be directed by Project Almanac‘s Dean Israelite, Power Rangers will debut in theaters on March 24, 2017.

I think this is brilliant casting. Elisabeth Banks is an absolutely hilarious and tremendous actress and I think she is perfect for the role of Rita Repulsa. One of the reasons I am excited for this is becasue of the fact that she has already shown that quirkiness that Rita has when Banks played Effie Trinket in the Hunger Games franchise. However we've never really seen her play the villainous role before so this will be a new direction for her. I think it is a perfect adding an experienced actor to this film simply because you need some star power to help your film gain exposure, but it's also someone the younger cast can go to for advice on how to do different scenes. Being a huge Power Ranger fan in my younger years, I'm really looking forward to seeing a new modern take on the first set of Power Rangers.

Across three movies, his longest line to date has been “Puny god,” but could Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk be getting some real dialogue in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok? Speaking with HitFix, director Taika Waititi had this to say about the possibility of The Hulk talking: “It’s interesting, because at the moment, there’s a big conversation that’s happening about how far to push that. Whether or not The Hulk should be [verbal/conscious]… I think a lot of those conversations have more to do with what’s going to come up in future movies. So I think a lot of those decisions are larger group decisions, rather than anything to do with just me or the writer. They have a lot of stuff that they have to consider. But I do think that’s the best way to track it. I think we all want that. I think we all want to see that development and the evolution of that character. I also think you can do it in a fun way.” Mark Ruffalo has previously teased that the Hulk and Bruce Banner personas may have begun to meld in the film, but whether the Hulk will smash those verbal barriers keeping him down remains to be seen. Thor: Ragnarok, aimed to close out the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Asgardian trilogy, will see the return of Chris Hemsworth as the god of thunder with Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Anthony Hopkins as Odin. Cate Blanchett is also in talks to play the film’s villain. The “Phase Three” entry recently brought aboard 2013 “Black List” screenwriter Stephany Folsom. Previously, Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle have worked on the script. Thor: Ragnarok is set to open in theaters on November 3, 2017 in 3D/2D theaters and IMAX.

I honestly don't know how to feel about this. The Hulk has always been an intimidating figure and he's been that way without really talking that much and I think hearing him have more dialogue well ruin the character. The character just destroys things and never asks any questions and he has the no care attitude. I would to see Mark Ruffalo himself get a bit more dialogue, but as for The Hulk himself I just want to see him smash things.

Deadline is reporting that two-time Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game, Pride & Prejudice) will star in the biopic Colette from Still Alice director Wash Westmoreland. Knightley will be portraying Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, the French novelist and Nobel Prize nominee most famous for penning the 1944 book “Gigi,” which was later adapted into the famous 1958 movie musical starring Leslie Caron, which won the Oscar for Best Picture. More recently, Stephen Frears adapted her 1920 novel “Chéri” into a 2009 film starring Michelle Pfeiffer. The screenplay was written by Westmoreland with his late husband and filmmaking partner Richard Glatzer, with whom he wrote and co-directed Still Alice. Pam Koffler and Christine Vachon (Carol, Still Alice) will produce Colette for Killer Films, with Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley (Carol, Made in Dagenham) producing for Number 9 Films. Michel Litvak of Bold Films will also produce.

I think this is tremendous casting. Keira Knightly is an actress who has given a lot of fantastic performances over the years, but often doesn't get the credit she deserves.  As mentioned in the article, she is a 2 time Academy Award nominee so that automatically lends credibility to her in any film and plus it's a bio-pic which could be an opportunity to get another nomination or possibly a win. I don't know too much about Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, but I did like the film adaptation of Gigi and I'm excited to get to know more about her and what Keira Knightly can bring to the role.

Sony Pictures Classics (via Entertainment Weekly) has revealed the first trailer for Don Cheadle’s directorial debut, Miles Ahead. You can check out the Miles Ahead trailer below. The film tells the story of a few lost days in the life of Miles Davis (Cheadle), the virtuoso, fighter and genius, as he bursts out of his silent period, conspires with a Rolling Stone writer (Ewan McGregor) to steal back his music, and relives the years he had with his great love, Frances Taylor (Emayatzy Corinealdi). Written by Steven Baigelman and Cheadle, Miles Ahead also stars Michael Stuhlbarg, and Keith Stanfield. Cheadle, Lenore Zerman, Pamela Hirsch, Daniel Wagner, Robert Ogden Barnum, Darryl Porter and Vince Wilburn, Jr. produced the film. Mark Amin, Baigelman, Jonathan Gardner and Brian Pope executive produced. Davis’ son, Erin Davis, and daughter, Cheryl Davis, are also executive producers, and the film was made with the participation of The Miles Davis Estate. The film was financed by BiFrost Pictures. Miles Ahead will get a limited theatrical release on April 1.

I really liked this trailer. It showed a lot of the film without giving too much away and we got to see a glimpse of Don Cheadle as Miles Davis. Now I'm not that big a fan of Miles Davis's music, but I'm excited to see this film mainly due to Cheadle. He is making his directorial debut and he looks like he fits the part of Miles Davis. I think this is a performance that if it can carry on throughout the year, then Don Cheadle will get an Oscar nomination. People put him in that conversation last year before the film was pushed back, but I think that the film will have ultimate payoff for those that have wanted to see the film.

A24 has revealed the new Red Band trailer for Green Room, the follow-up film from Blue Ruin‘s Jeremy Saulnier. The film earned exemplary reviews at its North American premiere at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. You can check out the heartstopping new Green Room Red Band trailer below.  Green Room stars Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Fright Night), Imogen Poots (Need for Speed, 28 Weeks Later), Alia Shawkat (“Arrested Development,” Whip It), Macon Blair (Blue Ruin), Joe Cole (“Peaky Blinders”), Callum Turner, and Patrick Stewart (X-Men, “Star Trek: The Next Generation”). Down on their luck punk rockers The Ain’t Rights are finishing up a long and unsuccessful tour, and are about to call it quits when they get an unexpected booking at an isolated, run-down club deep in the backwoods of Oregon. What seems merely to be a third-rate gig escalates into something much more sinister when they witness an act of violence backstage that they weren’t meant to see. Now trapped backstage, they must face off against the club’s depraved owner, Darcy Banker (Stewart), a man who will do anything to protect the secrets of his nefarious enterprise. But while Darcy and his henchmen think the band will be easy to get rid of, The Ain’t Rights prove themselves much more cunning and capable than anyone expected, turning the tables on their unsuspecting captors and setting the stage for the ultimate life-or-death showdown. A24 will give Green Room a limited release on April 15, followed by expansion on April 22, and a wide release on April 29.

This was an insane trailer. It's completely different than what I thought the film was about and it's a film that has now peaked my interest thanks to this trailer. Patrick Stewart looks intimidating in the film and that's something I never thought I would see and I'm excited to see him be a bad guy in a film for a change. The film looks like it is going to be a lot of fun with a lot of suspense built in from the moment go and I cannot wait to check the film out.
