2-17-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Marvel Studios has begun principal photography at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is slated to hit U.S. theaters on May 5, 2017. The production will shoot at Atlanta’s Pinewood Studios. The film is written and directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Slither). The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 cast includes the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World, Guardians of the Galaxy) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (SPECTRE, Guardians of the Galaxy) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Guardians of the Galaxy, Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (Joy, American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy, Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, “Gilmore Girls”) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), who plays Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (“The Knick,” The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, Furious 7). Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is produced by Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jonathan Schwartz, Nik Korda and Stan Lee serving as executive producers.

Director James Gunn’s creative team also includes director of photography Henry Braham (The Legend of Tarzan, The Golden Compass); production designer Scott Chambliss (Star Trek, Tomorrowland); editors Fred Raskin (The Hateful Eight, Guardians of the Galaxy) and Craig Wood (Guardians of the Galaxy, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End); three time Oscar-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky (Captain America: Civil War, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone); Oscar-nominated visual effects supervisor Chris Townsend (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3); stunt coordinator Tommy Harper (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Captain America: The Winter Soldier); co-producer / first assistant director Lars Winther (Captain America: Civil War, Captain America: The Winter Soldier); and six-time Oscar nominee, special effects supervisor Dan Sudick (Captain America: Civil War, The Avengers). The original Guardians of the Galaxy was a hit with critics and audiences alike, earning over $770 million at the worldwide box-office, and holds the record as the most successful debut film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In addition, the film’s soundtrack went platinum and was nominated for a Grammy.

Based on the Marvel comic characters first published in 1969, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the lineage of epic big-screen adventures chronicled in Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, and the upcoming release schedule, which includes Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016; Doctor Strange, November 4, 2016; Spider-Man, July 7, 2017; and Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. Marvel Studios continued its unprecedented success in 2015 with the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron. At the time of release, the film recorded the second-biggest opening weekend of all time with a $191.3 million box office. It has also been the #1 release in every country where it has opened and has grossed over $1.4 billion in global box office. The studio also successfully launched another franchise with Ant-Man, starring Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly. The film opened #1 at the box office on July 17 and went on to gross more than $519 million at the worldwide box office. The film propelled the Marvel brands’ #1 domestic box-office opening streak to a record-breaking 12 consecutive films.

This is fantastic news to hear. Now I know I always this is great news and it makes the film feel more real, what I mean is that this film is currently filming as we speak and that just means we're closer to the film coming out and the more and more we hear/see from set makes the project realer. A lot of projects can start and confirm shooting has begun, but sometimes films start shooting and things come up and the film gets delayed and bunch of other things can happen. I also like the 4 additional cast members joining the film especially Kurt Russell, who may believe could be playing Star-Lord's father and that would be perfect especially if you've seen Russell's older work and compare it to Chris Pratt, you'll see a lot of similarities. I really enjoyed the first film and I'm excited to see what this film brings to the table.

Nerdist got a chance to talk to Oscar-nominated writer/director Adam McKay (The Big Short, Anchorman) about the possibility of him returning to perform the same re-write duties on Marvel Studios sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp as he did on the first one, to which the self-avowed comic book fan answered in the enthusiastic affirmative. “We’ve been talking to Marvel actually,” McKay said. “We just talked to them the other day, and it looks like I will be involved. I don’t know if it’s gonna be right from page one. But it looks like I will definitely be involved. There you go. There’s a little headline for the fanboys!” McKay will work on a script currently being developed by writers Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari, members of the Transformers writer’s room who previously did production re-write work on Ant-Man, as well as star Paul Rudd. It makes sense given McKay’s skill set in improv, as well as his time campaigning for The Big Short right now, that he would come on to punch-up the script after at least a draft or two is complete. As for the oft-discussed possibility of him stepping in and actually directing a Marvel movie (Inhumans has been suggested), that seems less likely as he’s currently working on a movie about immigration with frequent collaborators John C. Reilly and Will Ferrell, as well as a concept about climate change. Ant-Man and the Wasp will feature the return of Paul Rudd as Scott Lang alongside Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne with Michael Douglas also expected to reprise the role of Hank Pym in the film. Peyton Reed will return to direct the film. “That was one of the things that was important to me in the first movie when I came on was emphasizing the Wasp more, both Hope Van Dyne and Janet Van Dyne,” Reed previously said. “It’s a crucial part. It’s a crucial part because in the comic books, with the exception of the first handful of Ant-Man stories, Wasp came on pretty early on in the comics in the ’60s and you really thought of them as a partnership, a romantic partnership as well as a hero team. It’s going to be fun to play around with all the aspects of that in this movie.” Ant-Man and The Wasp is set for release on July 6, 2018. Its predecessor has now grossed over $519 million at the global box office.

This is really great news to hear. Adam McKay is an exceptional director who to me doesn't get enough credit for the work he does and I'm glad to see his returning for several reasons. One reason is the fact that he directed the first film and now he's getting a shot at it again to make another great film. Also if things pan out for him, by the time this film begins filming he have an Oscar under his belt.

According to Heat Vision, Oscar winner Julianne Moore (Still Alice, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay) is circling the lead villain role in 20th Century Fox’s Kingsman 2, the sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of the Mark Millar/Dave Gibbons graphic novel Kingsman: The Secret Service that became a surprise hit, grossing $128 million domestically and another $286 million overseas for a worldwide total of $414.4 million. Moore is currently set to co-star in frequent collaborator Todd Haynes’ new picture Wonderstruck, as well as co-starring with Matt Damon and Josh Brolin in director George Clooney’s Suburbicon. Right now she and Fox are trying to work out the scheduling issues, but if it cannot be resolved, they may have to look for another actress.  Matthew Vaughn is confirmed to direct Kingsman 2, the first sequel he’s ever personally helmed, with Taron Egerton (Eddie the Eagle) returning to his star-making role as Gary ‘Eggsy’ Unwin, who is now fully-trained secret agent. While the first film took place primarily in England, the new one is said to focus more on the USA and the American branch of the title covert Secret Service agency. Colin Firth is not expected to return in either a flashback or as a new character, although the possibility of him playing his own twin brother was bandied about before being abandoned.  20th Century Fox has set a June 16, 2017 release date for Kingsman: The Secret Service 2.

This is really great news to hear. Julianne Moore is just an amazing actress and she might even be one of the best working in the business today. I think her playing the villain is great idea due to the fact of the character she played in The Hunger Games franchise. I love the talent that both this film is assembling and has already assembled with the first film and hopefully the second film can have a payoff like its predecessor. The first film was a complete surprise and I absolutely enjoyed it and I'm really looking forward to what the sequel has in store.

In development for some time, Warner Bros. Pictures‘ live action Pinocchio movie appears to have found a new director in Ron Howard. The Tracking Board brings word that Howard will take on the classic tale with Robert Downey Jr. set to play the part of Pinocchio’s creator, Geppetto. The “Pinocchio” story originated towards the end of the 19th century. Italian author Carlo Collodi’s novel, “The Adventures of Pinocchio,” was published at first as a serial, beginning in 1881. In 1940, Walt Disney Pictures released the most famous adaptation, though many subsequent takes have followed. In fact, Disney is said to be currently developing their own “Pinocchio inspired” project while Guillermo del Toro still hopes to bring his 3D stop-motion animated version to the screen. At one time planned as a directing vehicle for the likes of Ben Stiller, Tim Burton and Paul Thomas Anderson, the Warner Bros. Pinocchio movie boasts a screenplay that, at various points, has been written by Michael Mitnick (The Giver), Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) and Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service). Details on the plot are few, but it is believed to feature Downey’s Geppetto as the central protagonist, following the character as he goes looking for his lost son. Ron Howard, who won two Academy Awards for his work as both a director and a producer on 2001’s A Beautiful Mind, most recently helmed In the Heart of the Sea at Warner Bros. Next up, Howard is returning to the world of best selling author Dan Brown. Following his The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons adaptations, Howard will cap off his trilogy with Inferno, set to hit the big screen October 16. Howard will also produce the Pinocchio movie alongside Brian Grazer through their Imagine Entertainment. Also producing are Dan Jinks, Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey.

This is a really odd yet inspiring choice to direct this film. Ron Howard has a knack for creating very beautiful films and this film seems to be in his wheelhouse given the premise and basic storyline. While the story isn't meant to be for children, the property is in public domain which allows you to create as many versions of a film was long as everything in your film is brand news and borrows nothing from the any other films based on the property other than the basic storyline. I the wasn't already doing The Jungle Book: Origins, I think Andy Serkis would've been an amazing choice, but I'm anxious to see what Ron Howard can do and hopefully he is able to pull it off.

Paramount Pictures has once again pushed back its upcoming The Ring movie sequel, Rings. Planned for release on April 1st, the horror feature will now target a Halloween release, hitting the big screen October 28. Rings stars Alex Roe as Holt, a young man who begins to become distant from his girlfriend, Julia (Matilda Lutz), after watching the infamous deadly videotape the series is known for. “The Big Bang Theory” star Johnny Galecki will co-star in the film. Released in 2002, The Ring was an English-language remake of Hideo Nakata’s 1998 supernatural thriller, Ringu, which told the story of a videotape of ghostly imagery that causes anyone who watches it to die seven days later. Ringu was followed by three Japanese sequels, while the Verbinski version received its own 2005 sequel directed by Nakata, titled The Ring Two. F. Javier Gutiérrez, best known for helming Before the Fall, is directing Rings, with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman writing the script based on a draft by David Loucka.

This is actually a really great decision. I understand why some studios choose to put horror films away from Halloween so basically they don't become obvious to the audience who is focused on other things besides movies. But putting it out at a time when people are focused on scary things, then a horror film could make an amazing amount of money due to the premium horror appeal. I think having the film come out on the 28th is a fantastic idea and I can about guarantee the film will make more money coming out in October opposed to April.
