Weekend Movie News 9-18-15 to 9-20-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Paramount Pictures has shifted its schedule and, as a result, has had Star Trek Beyond delayed by two weeks. It will now hit the big screen July 22, 2016 instead of the originally-planned release date of July 8, 2016. Star Trek Beyond is set to feature the return of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and John Cho along with new roles for Idris Elba, Sofia Boutella and Joe Taslim. Abrams, who directed the last two films, is producing the third film in the rebooted franchise with four time Fast and Furious franchise helmer Justin Lin directing from a script by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung. Having Star Trek Beyond delayed puts the 50th anniversary feature entry in the path of both Guy Ritchie’s Knights of the Roundtable (a potential franchise launcher set to star Djimon Hounsou, Eric Bana, Charlie Hunnam, Mikael Persbrandt, Astrid Berges-Frisbey and Elizabeth Olsen) and the animated franchise sequel Ice Age: Collision Course (featuring the returning voice talents of Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo and Queen Latifah). The July 22 release put Star Trek Beyond on track to arrive in theaters about a month and a half prior to the Star Trek franchise’s 50th Anniversary. Although it wasn’t the first episode produced, “The Man Trap,” in which the crew of the Enterprise encounters a deadly shapeshifting salt vampire, introduced the world to “Star Trek” on September 8, 1966.

This is pretty surprising news to hear. I say that because seeing a film move from the weekend after the 4th of July (which has been proven to be good weekend for movies), moves a few weeks back is really shocking. On the July 8th weekend, the film had no competition and it would've dominated the box office. Now that it moves back, I think it will lose money because the same people who will see this film, will also go see the King Arthur film and that hurts the film financially. This is a move that just doesn't make any sense and I really wonder what the studio was thinking with the decision.

The Tracking Board brings word that Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are set to add another DC Comics property to their extensive roster of planned films with a big screen team up of fan-favorites, Booster Gold and Blue Beetle. The outlet reports that superstar executive producer Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” and “Supergirl”) will direct the Blue Beetle and Booster Gold movie, which is being pitched as a “superhero buddy cop movie” with an emphasis on comedy. In addition, Heroic Hollywood reports that writer Zak Penn, the write of X-Men: The Last Stand, The Incredible Hulk, and a the initial draft of The Avengers, is rumored to be writing the script. Check back here for confirmation on these reports as we learn them. Created by Dan Jurgens in 1986 and featured in his own eponymous series, Booster Gold is the superheroic identity of Michael Jon Carter, a resident of the 25th century who travels back in time to the present day DC Universe. There, he makes use of his futuristic technology to become a hero, at first eschewing traditional heroic notions of justice and nobility and instead signing endorsement deals and shamelessly self-promoting. Blue Beetle, however, is a legacy hero with three different men taking on the mantle. The two most notable heroes to use the name, Ted Kord and Jaime Reyes, were both partners with Booster Gold at different points in time.

This is pretty great news to hear. Blue Beetle and Booster Gold are two of the funnest characters in comic book history and I think they are perfect for a feature film. I think this will be down by New Line and it will be in the separate universe that Warner Bros. has talked about for awhile. I also love that Zak Penn is writing the film because he is very talented and I have really enjoyed everything he has written (especially Pacific Rim). My one concern about the film is that Greg Berlanti is directing. While I'm not knocking him for what he has done with the TV cinematic universe, but he hasn't down anything great as a film director, but maybe this film can sort of build that confidence for me to have in him handling films like these.

Word came down earlier this week that Pacific Rim 2 had not only been pushed back as previously reported, but the film had also been delayed indefinitely. Speaking with EW, director Guillermo del Toro now says he remains hopeful about the film eventually being made. “We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it,” he tells the magazine, before admitting, “I may do another movie in the middle.” Last summer, Legendary and del Toro surprised fans by announcing the film would be getting a sequel, an animated series, and a comic book continuation as well. Of the three, the comic book, Pacific Rim: Tales from the Drift, will debut this November. “It’s a few years after the first one. It’s not an immediate follow-up,” del Toro previously said about the film’s sequel. “It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It’s quite a jump.” Pacific Rim hit theaters in summer 2013 and grossed just $101 million at the domestic box office but went on to take in over $400 million worldwide. The film starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman.

I don't know what to think about these comments. On one hand I want to remain hopeful for the sequel because I absolutely loved Pacific Rim and I was really hoping the film would get a sequel and I thought there was so many different ways the film could go. On the other hand I can see why the studio doesn't want to go forward with the film because the film barely made enough of a profit to warrant a sequel and because Guillermo del Toro always wants more money for his sequels (see the Hellboy franchise for example) and it just doesn't make a lot of business sense for the studio. I hope the sequel comes to fruition and we get to see some more Jaegers.

It was previously confirmed that former Ghostbusters Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd will have cameos in Paul Feig’s upcoming Ghostbusters reboot, and now The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Ernie Hudson will also appear in the film. It’s unclear what role he will have in the film, though the outlet reports he was spotted on set Saturday, the final day of shooting for the film. Ghostbusters stars Kristen Wiig as Erin Gilbert, Kate McKinnon as Jillian Holtzman, Melissa McCarthy as Abby Yates and Leslie Jones as Patty Tolan. The film is also set feature Chris Hemsworth as the new secretary, Andy Garcia as the Mayor of New York City, Michael K. Williams as a character named “Hawkins,” Matt Walsh as a character named “Rourke,” and Neil Casey as the film’s villain. New York City’s NY1 news anchor Pat Kiernan is also set to appear as news anchor in the film. “I’m having a lot of fun playing with genres,” Feig told ComingSoon.net of the new film earlier this year, “…I love the original film, but I also just love the idea of busting ghosts and kind of paranormal warriors. I thought, ‘You know, if I could do this with the funny women I know and kind of just do a new origin story…’ I’m more interested in what would happen today. You know, you see things on TV about ghosts, but none of it’s real. What if, suddenly, something started happening? What happens when that just begins to happen to people? Also, how do they develop their technology? It’s not as fun if they’re just handed their proton packs. It’s why it’s not as fun to do a sequel. The fun is getting there.” Directed by Feig from a script he co-wrote with Katie Dippold, Ghostbusters is targeting a July 15, 2016 release.

This is great news to hear. It's crazy to think that we had heard from Dan Aykroyd for almost 25 years that a third Ghostbusters film was on the way and that everyone would be returning and that will unfortunately never happen. But now that a female version of the franchise is happening all of the living original Ghostbusters are all going to be in the film. I'm glad that they could all return to the franchise eventhough they won't be playing the characters that they made famous , I'm glad to see these three return in some capacity. I was a little hesitant about this film at first, but from everything I've heard and seen about the film gets me really excited and I cannot wait to see the film.

Universal Pictures is quickly gearing up for Ouija 2, the sequel to last year’s low-budget smash, and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has added a leading man to the roster with Henry Thomas, best known as the lead in 1982’s classic E.T. The Extraterrestrial as well as adult performances in Gangs of New York, Dear John and the recent “Sons of Liberty.” Child actress and horror vet Lulu Wilson (Deliver Us From Evil) has also joined the cast. Directing the movie is Mike Flanagan, best known for his 2014 horror film Oculus, starring Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites, which was also co-produced by Blumhouse. Flanagan is co-writing the screenplay for the sequel with his Oculus co-writer Jeff Howard. 17-year-old Annalise Basso, who also appeared in Oculus as the younger version of Gillan’s character, has been hired for the leading role in the movie as a young girl whose father died. Fun with boards and planchets will ensue. The film will co-star actress Elizabeth Reaser (The Twilight Saga). Universal Pictures and their partners (Hasbro, Platinum Dunes, Blumhouse Productions) have already set a prime horror release date of October 21, 2016 for Ouija 2, hoping to repeat the success of the first movie which grossed $102.5 million worldwide on a $5 million budget.

This is actually great casting. Henry Thomas is a guy that after E.T., was lost in the shuffle and he hasn't really done much sense. He is a very talented actor and I understand  why he took the role, but he seriously needs to phone home to his agent because this isn't the film I want to see him in. I think this film is going to be just the first one in the sense that it is going to be a pile of crap film that I'm going to end up hating. Hopefully Thomas can bring something great to the table, but I honestly don't want to get my hopes up.
