9-8-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Rumors have been circulating for months (and it was teased just yesterday), but it has now been confirmed that Sam Smith (“Stay with Me,” ” “I’m Not the Only One”) will perform the theme song to the 24th James Bond film, SPECTRE. The SPECTRE theme song, titled “Writing’s on the Wall,” will be available through Capitol Records to purchase and stream on September 25. Smith co-wrote the song with his fellow Grammy winner Jimmy Napes and it’s quite a coup for the singer who emerged with his 2014 debut album “In The Lonely Hour” debuting at #1 in the UK and #2 in the United States. Smith will be the first British male solo artist to perform a Bond theme song since Tom Jones performed the theme from Thunderball in 1965. (Paul McCartney performed the theme song for Live and Let Die with his band Wings and Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell isn’t British.) In the press release from Sony, SPECTRE producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said: “Sam and Jimmy have written the most inspirational song for SPECTRE and with Sam’s extraordinary vocal performance, ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ will surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time.” While Smith added, “This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.” The previous theme song from Skyfall was performed by Adele and it received the Academy and Golden Globe awards for “Best Original Song” as well as the Grammy Award for “Best Song Written for Visual Media” and the Brit Award for “British Single of the Year.”

In the film once again directed by Sam Mendes, a cryptic message from the past sends James Bond (Daniel Craig) on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia Sciarra (Monica Bellucci), the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation known as SPECTRE. Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh (Andrew Scott), the new head of the Centre for National Security, questions Bond’s actions and challenges the relevance of MI6, led by M (Ralph Fiennes). Bond covertly enlists Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) and Q (Ben Whishaw) to help him seek out Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), the daughter of his old nemesis Mr White (Jesper Christensen), who may hold the clue to untangling the web of SPECTRE. As the daughter of an assassin, she understands Bond in a way most others cannot. As Bond ventures towards the heart of SPECTRE, he learns of a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks, played by Christoph Waltz.” SPECTRE is scheduled for release in the UK on October 26 and in the United States on November 6.

I think this is a fantastic choice to sing the Bond song. Besides the actor who is portraying 007, the biggest thing in the entire Bond franchise is the theme song and some of the greatest artists of all-time have sung the Bond theme. Now while I don't agree with Sam Smith's lifestyle, i'm a big fan of his music and he has the perfect voice for the song and I think he'll knock it out of the park. If it is half as good as what Adele did with Skyfall then I think this can be a big success.

Although the film itself is, at the moment, a complete mystery, Warner Bros. Pictures has set Christopher Nolan’s next movie for release on Friday, July 21, 2017. That date has the mystery project arriving just one week after 20th Century Fox’s War of the Planet of the Apes and just one week before Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures’ new Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man film, set to star Tom Holland as the friendly neighborhood web-slinger. Christopher Nolan has been working with Warner Bros. since 2002 when he directed Insomnia, a remake of Erik Skjoldbjærg’s 1997 Swedish crime thriller, starring Al Pacino, Hilary Swank and the late Robin Williams. He also famously helmed the studio’s Dark Knight trilogy (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises) as well as three original features: The Prestige, Inception and, most recently, Interstellar (a co-production with Paramount Pictures). Post-Interstellar, Christopher Nolan released the documentary short Quay, which is currently touring the country as part of a Quay Brothers retrospective.

This is very interesting news to hear. Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite directors of all-time and I have pretty much enjoyed every film he's ever made. He's coming off of Interstellar which was mixed to critics, but I absolutely enjoyed the film. This will be a very interesting to see how it plays put because the last time Christopher Nolan released an original film in the summer, he got a Best Picture nominated film in Inception and I'm very curious to see what he comes up with next. One thing that has been rumored for a very long time is that Christopher Nolan was the frontrunner to direct Bond 25 and with Sam Mendes stating that Spectre will be his last Bond film, then it opens the door for Nolan to take over.  I don't think that this is the case, because James Bond is with Sony and this is Warner Bros. so this will probably put a stop to those rumors pretty quick. Unless Warner Bros. can strike a deal with Sony for this one film like they were able to do with Paramount for Interstellar then Nolan won't be directing a Bond film for a long time.

With the drama set to be the opening night film of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Fox Searchlight has just released the Demolition trailer. In the player below, you can take a first look at the new drama from Dallas Buyers Club and Wild helmer Jean-Marc Vallée, starring Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, Zodiac). In Demolition, Davis Gyllenhaal) is a successful investment banker who struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. Despite pressure from his father in law Phil (Chris Cooper) to pull it together, Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns into a series of letters revealing startling personal admissions. Davis’ letters catch the attention of customer service rep Karen (Naomi Watts) and, amidst emotional and financial burdens of her own, the two form an unlikely connection. With the help of Karen and her son Chris (Judah Lewis), Davis starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew. Demolition is based on a Black List screenplay by Bryan Sipe. “‘Demolition’ is such a powerful and touching story,” Vallée said in a statement when the project was first announced, “written with a strong and sincere desire to try to understand the human psyche, what makes us so unique, so special, what makes us love. This is a script of a rare quality, of a beautiful humanity.””

This was a really great trailer. Jake Gyllenhaal has been on a roll as of late and he is going to get rewarded for that very soon. This is a film in which he could get an Oscar nomination for as long as it can hold up throughout the year due to it's release in April. The film is directed by Jean-Marc Vallée who has done nothing, but amazing work in his past two films and this film shouldn't be any different. The film sounds and looks interesting and I cannot wait to see it.

Planned for Martin Scorsese to helm back in 2011, the big screen adaptation of Jo Nesbo‘s best seller The Snowman found a new helmer last year in Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy). Now, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the project appears to have found a lead in Academy Award nominee Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Shame). The seventh entry in Nesbo’s “Harry Hole” series, The Snowman is officially described as follows: It is November in Oslo and the first snow of the year has fallen. Birte Becker comes home from work and praises the snowman her husband and son have made in the garden. But they haven’t made a snowman. As the family stand by the sitting room window looking out in amazement at the snowman, the son notices that it is facing the house. The black eyes are staring at the window. At them. Detective Inspector Harry Hole receives an anonymous letter signed “The Snowman.” Later he finds an alarming common thread in all the old disappearance cases. Married women go missing the day the first snow falls. That same night Sylvia Pedersen is fighting her way through the first snow in a forest outside Oslo. She knows she is running for her life, but she doesn’t know what from. Nor does she know what lies ahead. Fortunately. Fassbender, who is described as being in talks for the leading role, can next be seen in Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs, which hits theaters October 9. Alfredson himself has drafted the screenplay alongside Soren Sveistrup. Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are attached to produce.

This is fantastic choice. As I have said many times before, getting talent to lead you film is not a bad move especially when you get someone like Michael Fassbender. This film sounds absolutely amazing and it has caught my interest in a very big way. I think it would've been awesome to see Fassbender and Scorsese team up for a film, but I still feel the film will be great without Scorsese. This should be a great film and I cannot wait to see it.

Deadline is reporting that Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx (Ray, Django Unchained) is in talks to co-star in director Edgar Wright’s new film Baby Driver. The actor will be playing a crime boss who coerces the title wheelman, played by Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars), to work for him in the TriStar Pictures film, also written by Wright. Lily James (Cinderella) co-stars as Elgort’s love interest in the movie. Baby Driver is a crime-based action film in which the lead character, named Baby because of his young-looking face, is a getaway driver for different bank robbers. One day, he gets in trouble when a bank robbery goes wrong, putting him on the run from various parties. The story is partly inspired by the “Blue Song” music video Wright directed for the band Mint Royale in 2003. Working Title Films–the producers and financiers of the “Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy” (i.e. Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End)–will be teaming with MRC (Ted) to finance the movie. Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will be producing along with Wright’s regular producing partner Nira Park.

This is a great choice. Jamie Foxx is an Academy Award winning actor and I think he'll knock this out of the park and this will be a very different role for him. The film is directed by Edgar Wright who has been pretty quiet since his highly publicized departure from Ant-Man it will be great to see another film done by him. The film sort of sounds little like what he wanted to do with Ant-Man and I'm really excited to see what he can do with a heist film.
