9-21-15/9-22-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Since I didn't get to bring you news from yesterday I figured that I would combine today's and yesterday's news (3 stories from each day). So here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

It was no surprise when Universal Studios set a release date for an upcoming Jurassic World sequel earlier this summer, especially considering the film had just crossed the $1.5 billion mark at the global box office. Speaking on the Jurassic Cast, director Colin Trevorrow spoke about coming up with this new trilogy of films with co-writer Derek Connolly on a road trip the pair took and how specific quotes from the original Jurassic Park informed their approach to each film. “Honestly, the trilogy is articulated in Jurassic Park, it’s all in there… Jurassic World is all based on Ian Malcolm’s quote, ‘You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you patented it, and packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you wanna sell it.’ That to me is Jurassic World, that’s why I had all the product placement, that’s what it was. The second one, Jurassic World 2, and as we were driving we tried to find, what is the foundation? ‘Dinosaurs and man, separated by 65 million years of evolution have been thrown back into the mix together. How can we know what to expect?’ That’s why it’s exciting that the movie did well, that leaves us a lot of room to run, and it was part of this design, it had a beginning, middle, and end when we wrote the first movie. Now that the movie did well, we get to play that out.”

These comments actually make a lot of sense. I'm glad Trevorrow has come out and has given an explanation to the people who have criticized the film for being filled with too many product placements. While those didn't bother me, I didn't think the film was perfect in any way. It also makes sense for this quote to be the inspiration because it helps connects all of the films and it fulfills upon the premonition that Ian Malcolm had in the first film. I'm really interested to see how the sequel will build upon the first film and how much it will incorporate elements of the other three films.

As he continues his promotional duties for the 10th annual Doritos Crash the Super Bowl competition, director Zack Snyder sheds more light (via Canoe) on the ever-evolving saga of whether or not Warner Bros. Pictures is developing a proper solo sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel beyond Superman’s (rather prominent) appearances in Batman v Superman and the two-part Justice League movies that Snyder is spearheading. “I think in a way ‘Batman v Superman’ is ‘Man of Steel 2,'” said Snyder. “‘Justice League’ is kind of the transcendent, knights-of-the-round-table of the story. It’d be interesting to think about what a standalone Superman movie might be.” While he doesn’t shoot down the idea of another solo Supes outing, Snyder’s comments certainly cast doubt that its on the forefront of his mind or the minds of the team spearheading the DC Extended Universe. While that might be a bummer to those who enjoyed Man of Steel, let us not forget that Henry Cavill’s Superman will likely play a central, even Arthurian role in that round table Snyder describes. “We really have to figure out the why of them, and I think that we have,” muses Zack Snyder of the twin Justice League films he’s helming next. “That’s the one thing that’s cool to me about ‘Batman v Superman,’ it’s all about the mythology of these two massive icons. And I think that’s compelling.” Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Henry Cavill in the role of Clark Kent/Superman, and Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, with Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane returning from Man of Steel, and Holly Hunter in a role newly created for the film. Jason Momoa will also be making an appearance as Aquaman. The film is set to open worldwide on March 25, 2016.

I really like these comments. Now does it disappoint me that the Man of Steel sequel may or may not be happening or it could be happening without being called Man of Steel 2. I understand that this film is going to build upon the events that happened in Man of Steel to help shape the DCCU, build I would rather see another film build upon the first film with just Superman. The other thing that bums me out is that while this film could technically be called a Man of Steel sequel, there have been reports that the film will focus more on Batman then Superman and that's understandable because they are creating a new Batman, but in order for a film to be a sequel to a Superman movie, then the film needs to focus more on Superman. I still think we will get a Man of Steel 2, but probably not until 2021 which will be 8 years after the release of Man of Steel and that's a long time for a sequel.

Two more stars are eyeing leading roles in DreamWorks’ upcoming adaptation of Paula Hawkins‘ runaway bestseller, The Girl on the Train, as The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that both Chris Evans (Marvel’s The Avengers, Before We Go) and Jared Leto (Suicide Squad, Dallas Buyers Club) have entered negotiations. They join the previously-announced stars Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow, Into the Woods), Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Hercules) and Haley Bennett (The Equalizer, The Hole) in the Tate Taylor (The Help, Get on Up) film. DreamWorks picked up the rights to The Girl on the Train movie in 2014 and had Erin Cressida Wilson (Secretary) begin the adaptation process even before the novel was published in January by Riverhead Books and sold over 2 million copies worldwide. It was the #1 book on the New York Times bestseller list for 19 weeks following its release. On Hawkins’ official site, The Girl on the Train is officially described as follows: Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost. And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good? Blunt is set to play Rachel with Evans up for the role of Rachel’s ex husband, Tom. Ferguson, then, is Anna, Tom’s new wife, while Bennett and Leto are to play a married neighbor couple that wind up inextricably tied to the plot. It is noted in the original article that, while both Evans and Leto are keen to join the project, scheduling may ultimately force one or other to bow out. The Girl on the Train movie will be produced by Marc Platt and Jared LeBoff for Marc Platt Productions.

This is terrific casting. Chris Evans is a superstar due to the success of Captain America in the MCU and Jared Leto has been on a hot-streak and very sought after actor after winning his Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club. The film itself sounds really interesting and it could garner a lot of a lot of award attention. Now the one sentence that bothers me is that either Evans or Leto might drop out and I could honestly see both of them leaving the project due to their commitments with their respective comic book characters, but I would more so lean towards Leto dropping out not only because of his role as The Joker, but with his music career going on at the same time. I hope leave the film, but I can totally see why it would happen.

Although the first film won’t even open in wide release until this Friday, September 25, Variety is reporting that Lionsgate is already making movement on a Sicario sequel. That’s due in no small part to the massive success of the film’s performance so far. Although it’s currently only playing on six screens, Sicario grossed an average of $66,881 per sceen, marking the highest per screen average for any film this year. Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Enemy), Sicario is scripted by “Sons of Anarchy” scribe Taylor Sheridan and follows FBI agent Kate (Emily Blunt, Into the Woods, Edge of Tomorrow) and her conflicting journey that descends into the intrigue, corruption and moral mayhem of the borderland drug wars. In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, Kate is exposed to the brutal world of international drug trafficking by members of a government task force who have enlisted her in their plan to take out a Mexican cartel boss. According to the trade, the Sicario sequel will follow the character played by Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro (Traffic, Guardians of the Galaxy). “Before the release of this movie, I was talking to Denis and I said, ‘What happened to this character?’” says Lionsgate Co-Chairman Patrick Wachsberger. “Where is Benicio going?”  The cast of Sicario also includes Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men, Inherent Vice), along with Jon Bernthal (“The Walking Dead,” Fury), and Emmy Award nominee Victor Garber (“Alias,” “The Flash”). Producers include Basil Iwanyk, Edward L. McDonnell, Molly Smith and Thad and Trent Luckinbill.

This is really surprising news to hear. I myself haven't even seen the film and the film is already possibly getting a sequel. From everything I've heard about the film, I'm really excited to see the film, but I feel like this news might give away things that happen in the first film. One example could be that Emily Blunt survives the drug war. Now I don't know that for sure, but it's little things like that that are given away by this rumored news. All I can say this a film I want to see and I'm very excited that I'll get that chance this weekend.

20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios have revealed the new Peanuts Movie trailer, which you can watch below. In the November 6 release, Snoopy, the world’s most lovable beagle – and flying ace – embarks upon his greatest mission as he takes to the skies to pursue his arch-nemesis The Red Baron, while his best pal, Charlie Brown, begins his own epic quest. The Peanuts Movie comes from the imagination of Charles M. Schulz and the creators of the Ice Age films. The most popular and influential comic strip of all time, “Peanuts” was read every day by 355 million people in 75 countries. In addition to the famous strip, “Peanuts” holiday television specials such as “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” have won Emmy’s and continue to be among the highest rated prime time TV specials. Featuring the voices of Noah Schnapp, Hadley Belle Miller, AJ Tecce, Noah Johnston, Venus Schultheis, Alexander Garfin, Francesca Capaldi, Mar Mar, Mariel Sheets, Rebecca Bloom, William Alexander Wunsch, Anastasia Bredikhina and Madisyn Shipman, The Peanuts Movie features a script by Craig Schulz, Bryan Schulz, and Cornelius Uliano.

This was a fun trailer. As I have said many many times before, I am a huge fan of the Peanuts and when I heard about the film I got really excited and hesitant at the same time simply because of other classic comic strips like Garfield and The Smurfs get treated so horribly. But after seeing the first trailer and knowing that they are keeping to the original animation style really gave me a lot of confidence. I've loved every trailer so far and they haven't given away much of the film whatsoever other than the basic plot. I think this is going to be a great film and I cannot wait to see it.

Paramount Pictures and Regency Enterprises just announced a release date for the Adam McKay film The Big Short, starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt. The film will hit limited theaters on December 11 before expanding wide on December 23. With the announcement comes the first Big Short trailer, which you can watch below. When four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to, the global collapse of the economy, they had an idea: The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything. The film is based on the true story and best-selling book by Michael Lewis (The Blind Side, Moneyball), and directed by Adam Mckay (Anchorman, Step Brothers). The Big Short is a Plan B Entertainment production. The film is executive produced by Louise Rosner-Meyer and Kevin Messick, with Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Arnon Milchan serving as producers. Charles Randolph and Adam McKay wrote the script.

This was a really great trailer. It gave you just enough to wet your appetite and this film could be a sleeper when it comes Oscar season. The reason why I say that is one the cast is full of Oscar caliber actors, two it is a true story (which Oscar voters tend to eat up) and thirdly is comes out around the Oscar season when only a few contenders are in theaters at the time. I'm also really excited to see a film from Adam McKay that isn't a straight comedy and I feel like he can knock it out of the park and I cannot wait to see the film.
