Weekend Movie News 5-20-16 to 5-22-16

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

With just over two months to go before the franchise sequel hits the big screen, Paramount Pictures today revealed the full Star Trek Beyond trailer at a special fan event held on the Paramount lot in Los Angeles, California. Now, the Star Trek Beyond trailer has made its way online and you can check it out below A Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions film, Star Trek Beyond is set to feature the return of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and John Cho along with new roles for Idris Elba, Sofia Boutella and Joe Taslim. J.J. Abrams, who directed the last two films, is producing the third film in the rebooted franchise. Lin is directing from a script by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung. Look for Star Trek Beyond to hit the big screen July 22. That’s about two months before the Star Trek franchise celebrates its 50th anniversary. “The Man Trap” became the first broadcast episode of the original Star Trek when it aired on NBC September 8, 1996. Since then, the franchise has had five different television spinoffs and more than a dozen feature films. A new television series is also on the way in 2017 with Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, American Gods) serving as co-creator and executive producer.

This was a phenomenal trailer especially compared to the last one. After watching the last trailer the first time, I thought I had just watched a really bad music video set to the  Beastie Boys's song Sabotage. After watching this trailer, I felt like I had actually watched a Star Trek trailer and it just felt more authentic. We get a great look at Idris Elba's character who looks just menacing and the weapons he uses to destroy the Enterprise looks amazing. I'm now really pumped to see the film and hopefully it can follow right along with the previous two installments.

Marvel Studios has officially confirmed new cast members for the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, including two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine, Cinderella”) as the mysterious and powerful new villain Hela, along with Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park, Independence Day: Resurgence) who joins the cast as the eccentric Grandmaster, Tessa Thompson (Creed, Selma) who will bring the classic hero Valkyrie to life on the big screen, and Karl Urban (Star Trek, The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King) who will add his might to the fray as Skurge. In addition, Marvel has confirmed that Mark Ruffalo will reprise his role of Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the sequel. “The continuation of the epic Thor franchise will be powerful and unique, and with the additions of Cate, Jeff, Tessa, Karl, and Mark to the cast we have the makings of his most dangerous and heroic adventure yet,” said Producer Kevin Feige. “The sheer, raw talent each of these actors brings to the screen can’t be quantified. Having any one of them join the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be an honor, and having all of them is incredible.” Thor’s new cast members join returning stars Chris Hemsworth in the title role for the fifth time; Tom Hiddleston as Thor’s adversarial, adopted brother, Loki; Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award winner Idris Elba as the Asgardian sentry, Heimdall; and Academy Award winner Sir Anthony Hopkins again portraying Odin, Ruler of Asgard. Jaimie Alexander also took to Twitter to tease her return as Lady Sif in the film. Thor: Ragnarok, the third installment of Marvel’s popular Norse Super Hero, is directed by Oscar nominated filmmaker Taika Waititi (Two Cars, One Night, What We Do in the Shadows). Kevin Feige will produce the film, joined by executive producers Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Victoria Alonso, Thomas M. Hammel and Stan Lee. Thor: Ragnarok will smash its way into theaters on November 3, 2017.

I love all of these additions to the cast. The two that standout for me are Jeff Goldblum and Karl Urban. The reason being is because they are two completely different types of actors, but yet their styles fit this film more than any other MCU film. I am a little disappointed that Cate Blanchett is going to be the main villain, because I think she could serve as another character and possibly as the female Thor that recently introduced in the comics. With the subtitle being Ragnarok, 'm hoping that somehow the character of Ragnarok is introduced to fight Thor and maybe a character like Beta Ray Bill joins the fold as well, mainly due to the hint in Guardians of the Galaxy.

As quickly as Michael Keaton’s hat was thrown in the ring for Spider-Man: Homecoming, it was taken out of it. The actor was previously in talks for the villain role of the film, but pulled out after just a few days. Now, Variety reports that Keaton is back in and that talks originally stalled when Robert Downey Jr. signed on for the film, but now it appears Sony Pictures is eager to have both of them appear in the movie. This report comes after new details about Spider-Man: Homecoming have surfaced from JoBlo, which reports that the main villain in the film (as previous rumors suggested) will be The Vulture. Not only that but another minor villain will be helping him out in the form of The Tinkerer, who the site says will “help him build his suit with recovered Chitauri tech from the Battle of New York.” Additionally the Spider-Man suit from Captain America: Civil War will be getting an upgrade in the film, as the site says the trademark “Web wings” designed by Steve Ditko will be a part of the costume and will deploy as Peter needs them in the film.  These new rumors remain unconfirmed, so check back here as w learn more details about Spider-Man: Homecoming. Spider-Man: Homecoming will star Tom Holland as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. He’ll be joined by Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Zendaya as a character by the name of Michelle, with Laura Harrier (One Life to Live) and Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel) set to play two of Peter’s other friends. The film is scripted by Vacation writers and directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein and will be directed by Jon Watts. Production is set to begin on the film this summer in Atlanta with the film swinging into theaters and IMAX on July 7, 2017.

I wish the studio would make up their mind. When it was first announced that Michael Keaton wasn't being considered anymore, I got pretty disappointed, Now with him being considered again, I'm really excited mainly because Keaton has turned his entire career around and he his now a very viable and capable actor of taking on every role possibly and making them his own. I love the idea of him playing a villain especially if it's a character like Vulture. He just fits him so well and I think he'll knock the role out of the park.

Move over, Angry Birds! A new mobile app is making its way to the big screen as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Australia’s Halfbrick Studios is looking to adapt their hugely popular Fruit Ninja game as a live-action family comedy. Tripp Vinson (San Andreas, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) will produce the feature film through his Vinson Films production banner, with screenwriters JP Lavin and Chad Damiani (the in-development How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack) attempting to turn the rather simple interface of slicing fruit and avoiding bombs into a viable dramatic story with elements like characters, backstory, a through line and human emotion. Sam White and Tara Farney will executive produce. With over 1 billion downloads and counting, Fruit Ninja is currently the second top-selling iOS game of all time.

Is this really surprising to anyone. I mean if something is somewhat popular, then you can expect that Hollywood is going to make a film about it. Now with the success of angry Birds this past weekend at the box office, you can expect a whole host of popular mobile apps such as Candy Crush or Clash of Clans will be made into a film in the near future. I understand that it seems like Hollywood is running out of ideas, but they are just capitalizing on an audience. If you want to be really technical, eventhough this would be based on something, it is still an original film that has never been done before so your argument is invalid.

EuropaCorp has released a second trailer for director Barry Sonnenfeld’s upcoming Nine Lives movie, starring Kevin Spacey as a man trapped in the body of a cat. You can check it out below. In the Nine Lives movie, Tom Brand (Kevin Spacey) is a daredevil billionaire at the top of his game. His eponymous company FireBrand is nearing completion on its greatest achievement to date – the tallest skyscraper in the northern hemisphere. But Tom’s workaholic lifestyle has disconnected him from his family, particularly his beautiful wife Lara (Jennifer Garner) and his adoring daughter Rebecca (Malina Weissman). Rebecca’s 11th birthday is here, and she wants the gift she wants every year, a cat. Tom hates cats, but he is without a gift and time is running out. His GPS directs him to a mystical pet store brimming with odd and exotic cats- where the store’s eccentric owner- Felix Perkins (Christopher Walken), presents him with a majestic tomcat, named Mr. Fuzzypants. En route to his daughter’s party, Tom has a terrible accident. When he regains consciousness he discovers that somehow, he has become trapped inside the body of the cat. Adopted by his own family, he begins to experience what life is truly like for the family pet, and as a cat, Tom begins to see his family and his life through a new and unexpected perspective. Meanwhile, his family adjusts to life with an odd and stubborn cat, and his son David (Robbie Amell), steps up in ways Tom never expected. If any hope exists of returning to his family as the husband and father they deserve, Tom will have to learn why he has been placed in this peculiar situation and the great lengths he must go to earn back his human existence. The Nine Lives movie will open in theaters on August 5, 2016.

I love Kevin Spacey, but this is an awful trailer for what looks to be an awful film. The film feels like another version of The Shaggy Dog only this time it's with a cat. I honestly don't know what was going through Spacey's mind when he accepted the role, but to be fair he'll probably be the only good part in the film. The jokes used in the trailer just felt childish and weren't even funny. I hope this isn't a black mark on his career, but this film has nowhere to go, but up.
