Weekend Movie News 5-13-16 to 5-15-16

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Following a schedule shift earlier this week that moved Legendary and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Godzilla 2 from 2018 to 2019, comes word, via Deadline, that the project has lost its director. Gareth Edwards was planning to return for the followup to his 2014 film but has, reportedly, now amicably exited the budding cinematic Kaijuniverse to pursue his own original projects. As revealed earlier this week, Godzilla 2 will arrive on the big screen March 22, 2019 and will pave the way for Godzilla vs Kong on May 29, 2020. Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island will hit first, however, debuting March 10, 2017. Details on Godzilla 2 are relatively few, although a presentation at last year’s Comic-Con International reiterated that the next chapter should introduce classic Toho monsters like King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan. “Audiences really responded to ‘Godzilla,'” said producer Thomas Tull when Godzilla vs Kong was officially announced last year. “Today, I’m excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I’ve always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we’re pleased to be announcing that and more.” Gareth Edwards latest film, meanwhile, brings him to a galaxy far, far away. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an immediate prequel to A New Hope, tells the story of resistance fighters who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star. Felicity Jones leads the cast of the film alongside Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Riz Ahmed. Look for it to hit the big screen December 16, 2016.

This is pretty disappointing news to hear. Gareth Edwards did a wonderful job with the most recent Godzilla and I was really looking forward to the sequel. When he got the Rouge One job, the studio had said they would wait until Edwards was done with Rouge One so he could start on Godzilla 2. I understand why he left because there are other projects he wants to do and now that Godzilla 2 won't come out until 2019, he can do more films and maybe he comes back to it after he does a few more films, but I would highly doubt it.

The impressive Black Panther cast continues to expand today with the addition of Michael B. Jordan! The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Jordan, who previously worked with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler on both Fruitvale Station and Creed, is also no stranger to Marvel Comics adaptations. He played Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, in 20th Century Fox‘s Fantastic Four. Jordan joins a Black Panther cast that includes Chadwick Boseman in the title role and, assuming negotiations pan out, Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o in another undisclosed role. Ryan Coogler is both writing and directing Black Panther, which will continue the story of Boseman’s T’Challa, the warrior King of Wakanda, following his debut in this summer’s Captain America: Civil War. It’s unclear what other characters will appear in the film, though Andy Serkis’ Ulysses Klaw, who made his debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron, is one strong possibility given the villain’s role in the comics. It’s also quite likely that we’ll see the return of Martin Freeman’s Civil War character Everett Ross who, in the comics, worked closely with T’Challa. Although Black Panther made his comic book debut in Fantastic Four #52 back in 1966, don’t expect any connection between the film and last year’s Fantastic Four movie. That franchise belongs to 20th Century’s Fox’s corner of the Marvel Universe and, following a disappointing worldwide box office of just over $167 million, the future of the FF is uncertain. Producer Simon Kinberg did mention earlier today, however, that he’d still like to see the cast reassemble for a sequel.

This is fantastic casting. If you've read my blogs in the past, you would know that I'm a huge fan of Michael B. Jordan and he is a star who I personally think will win a few Oscars down the line because he is just that good. I love how he is going to be in this film after the longest time of him being rumored to be up for the role of T'Challa/Black Panther before Chadwick Boseman got the part and Michael B. Jordan signed on for Fantastic Four. It's also going to be fun to see him rejoin his Creed director Ryan Coogler and I'm anxious to see how much there chemistry will carry over to this film. I don't honestly know who he is playing, but I'm sure whoever he is playing, he will have a big role in the film and hopefully a bigger role in the MCU.

Following the film’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Walt Disney Pictures has released the new trailer for director Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, The BFG. You can view the new BFG trailer and poster below! The BFG (Mark Rylance), while a giant himself, is a Big Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part. Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the BFG prefers Snozzcumber and Frobscottle. Upon her arrival in Giant Country, Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, is initially frightened of the mysterious giant who has brought her to his cave, but soon comes to realize that the BFG is actually quite gentle and charming, and, having never met a giant before, has many questions. The BFG brings Sophie to Dream Country where he collects dreams and sends them to children, teaching her all about the magic and mystery of dreams.

Having both been on their own in the world up until now, their affection for one another quickly grows. But Sophie’s presence in Giant Country has attracted the unwanted attention of the other giants, who have become increasingly more bothersome. Says Spielberg, “It’s a story about friendship, it’s a story about loyalty and protecting your friends and it’s a story that shows that even a little girl can help a big giant solve his biggest problems.” Sophie and the BFG soon depart for London to see the Queen (Penelope Wilton) and warn her of the precarious giant situation, but they must first convince the Queen and her maid, Mary (Rebecca Hall), that giants do indeed exist. Together, they come up with a plan to get rid of the giants once and for all. Directed by three-time Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg (Bridge of Spies, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan) from a screenplay by Melissa Mathison (E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, The Black Stallion) based on the best-selling novel by Roald Dahl, The BFG stars three-time Tony Award and two-time Olivier Award winner Mark Rylance, newcomer Ruby Barnhill, Penelope Wilton, Jemaine Clement, Rebecca Hall, Rafe Spall and Bill Hader. The film is produced by Spielberg, Frank Marshall (Jurassic World, The Bourne Ultimatum) and Sam Mercer (Snow White and the Huntsman, The Sixth Sense) with Kathleen Kennedy (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Lincoln), John Madden (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Shakespeare in Love), Kristie Macosko Krieger (Bridge of Spies, Lincoln), Michael Siegel (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Rise of the Guardians), Frank Smith and Naia Cucukov serving as executive producers. The BFG opens in U.S. theaters on July 1, 2016. 2016 is the year that marks the 100th anniversary of Dahl’s birth.

This was a nice trailer. It showed a few new scenes, but none of them gave away any part of the movie and it was simple and to the point. I've said before that I have never read the book so I'm going into the film a little blind and ti excited me because now I don't have any expectations and can't be that disappointed. I really love how the film looks and this could very well could compete for quite a few Oscars and Mark Rylance might even win another Oscar for his work in this film. I love the summer time date for it and I think this is going to be a film the whole family sees.

Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games, X-Men, Silver Linings Playbook) may be looking to add another franchise to her resume as Tracking Board reports the actress is in talks to join fellow Oscar winner Sandra Bullock (Gravity, The Blind Side) in Warner Bros.‘ all-new, all-female Ocean’s Eleven reboot. This would reunite Lawrence with her The Hunger Games director Gary Ross, who is onboard to direct and produce. Apparently this new film will be a continuation of the George Clooney-led films, with Bullock playing Danny Ocean’s ex-con sister. With help from her right-hand woman (Lawrence, presumably taking the Brad Pitt slot), she’ll form a team of thieves to steal a necklace from the Met Ball in order to frame a villainous gallery owner. Shooting is expected to begin this fall. Ocean’s Eleven remake trilogy filmmaker Steven Soderbergh has been onboard to develop the reboot with producers Clooney and the late Jerry Weintraub since 2014, with screenwriter Olivia Milch (Queen & Country, Little Women) penning the script. “Ocean’s” is a well-honed brand that dates back to the original Rat Pack-led Ocean’s 11 from 1960, starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. Ross is currently putting the finishing touches on his Civil War epic Free State of Jones, starring Matthew McConaughey, which is due out on June 24. Meanwhile, Lawrence can be seen in this month’s superhero epic X-Men: Apocalypse, followed by the sci-fi romance Passengers with Chris Pratt this Christmas.

I'm not surprised by the casting. When you try to put together an ensemble of female actresses together, then you have to mention Jennifer Lawrence. I wasn't on board for this before and I'm still not there just yet and it would depend on who else joined the cast such as a more unknown actress than a leading lady. I do like how this film is going to continue on from where Ocean's 13 left off and that Sandra Bullock is George Clooney's sister in the franchise. Hopefully the next few casting choices get me excited because I'm just not all that excited yet.

Foresight Unlimited announced today that Toby Kebbell (Ben-Hur) will star in Rob Cohen’s (The Fast and the Furious) upcoming action thriller Category 5, which is based on a script by Scott Windhauser and Rob Cohen. Howard Baldwin, Karen Baldwin, Michael Tadross Jr., Danny Roth, and Rob Cohen will produce. Foresight Unlimited’s Mark Damon and Tamara Birkemoe will executive produce and are handling foreign sales at Cannes. Additional casting is currently underway, with production slated to begin in August 2016. Category 5 follows a team of tech hackers who infiltrate a U.S. Mint facility on a small coastal town in a $200M heist, just as a disastrous Category 5, the storm of the century, is about to strike and level it to the ground. The only other two people left in the town, a meteorologist, a hurricane chaser, and a woman treasury agent must survive the horrific storm while stopping the thieves from getting away with the heist of the century. Foresight’s Mark Damon said: “Toby is a fresh talent and rising star. This is the perfect time for him to be taking the lead in such an adrenaline-pumped action film, having just wrapped big budget studio pics. We look forward to watching him continue to gain momentum with ‘Category 5.’” Kebbell was last seen in Fantastic Four and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for 20th Century Fox. His upcoming credits include: Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island for Warner Bros.; J.A. Bayona’s A Monster Calls for Focus; Timur Bekmambetov’s Ben-Hur for Paramount Pictures and MGM; Duncan Jones’ Warcraft for Universal Pictures; and Stephen Gaghan’s Gold for TWC. Cohen takes on the action-film having risen to prominence through previous directorial roles including The Fast and the Furious starring Vin Diesel and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor starring Brendan Fraser for Universal; xXx starring Vin Diesel for Columbia Pictures; and Alex Cross starring Tyler Perry for Summit Entertainment. He most recently directed The Boy Next Door starring Jennifer Lopez for Universal Pictures, and will direct The Adventures of Marco Polo for Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman at Paramount Pictures.

Now this is a casting choice I can get behind. Toby Kebbell is a phenomenal actor and he has a really bright future ahead of him. To see that he is willing to take on a project like this compared to the rest of his filmography and you really start to respect him for what he is willing to do. The film itself sounds neat and it will be fun to see who they cast around him because with it being such a small group of 5 or 6, chemistry is going to play a big part in the films success.
