5-24-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Walt Disney Pictures has revealed the trailer for their new live-action retelling of the cherished animated favorite, Beauty and the Beast. You can watch the Beauty and the Beast trailer below. The film stars Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as Beast, Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, Luke Evans as Gaston, Josh Gad as LeFou, Kevin Kline as Maurice (Belle’s father), Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Plumette, the feather duster, Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, and Stanley Tucci as a grand piano named Cadenza. Bill Condon is directing Beauty and the Beast from a script by Stephen Chbosky, and the film will be produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman. Eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, who won two Academy Awards for the 1991 animated classic, has written three new songs for the production with Sir Tim Rice. Walt Disney Pictures will release the movie on March 17, 2017.

I really loved this trailer. Now I know it was just a little teaser, but man it got me pumped to see the film. I mean we got a look at the castle in the opening and throughout the trailer, we also got the theme from the original animated film which is just haunting and it fit so well. It was nice to hear both Ian McKellen and Ewan McGregor as their respective characters and we even got a small glimpse at Emma Watson as Belle. I don't think I've been this excited for a Disney live-action remake film and I can't wait for an already loaded 2017.

Disney•Pixar has released the new trailer for the long-awaited sequel Finding Dory, featuring returning stars Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks back in their classic voice roles. Watch the new Finding Dory trailer below. Finding Dory picks up six months after the first movie, with Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) living a quiet life among the clown fishes. After going with Nemo on a class trip to see manta rays migrate back home, her home sickness leads the forgetful Dory on a quest to find where she came from. “The movie will be mostly set at the California Marine Biology Institute, a huge complex of sea life rehabilitation and aquarium, where Dory was born and raised,” Pixar President Jim Morris stated previously. “We will get to meet new characters, like an octopus, sea lions, a beluga whale, among others.” Finding Dory features returning favorites Marlin, Nemo and the Tank Gang. Set in part along the California coastline, the story also welcomes a host of new characters, including a few who will prove to be a very important part of Dory’s life, such as her parents voiced by Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy. Findng Nemo helmer Andrew Stanton (John Carter) returns to the directors chair for the animated film, which features the voices of Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks, Ed O’Neill, Kaitlin Olson, Ty Burrell, Michael Sheen, Eugene Levy and Diane Keaton. Walt Disney Pictures will release the animated sequel on June 17.

This was a pretty fun trailer. It does sorta feel like the last film in the sense that one of the main characters gets captured and is taking to a fish tank and makes new friends with strange new fish and ocean animals. The jokes in the trailer were great and I really enjoyed the last shot of the trailer a lot. I think this film is going ti tug at our heartstrings quite a bit and that's what Pixar is best at. I enjoyed Finding Nemo and I hope that the magic is still there 12 years after the fact.

Paramount Pictures has released a new Star Trek Beyond poster, featuring the crew of the Enterprise being watched over by Idris Elba’s new villain, Krall. Check out the new Star Trek Beyond poster below.  A Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions film, Star Trek Beyond is set to feature the return of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and John Cho along with new roles for Idris Elba, Sofia Boutella and Joe Taslim. J.J. Abrams, who directed the last two films, is producing the third film in the rebooted franchise. Lin is directing from a script by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung. Look for Star Trek Beyond to hit the big screen July 22, just a few weeks before the Star Trek franchise celebrates its 50th anniversary. “The Man Trap” became the first broadcast episode of the original Star Trek when it aired on NBC September 8, 1996. Since then, the franchise has had five different television spinoffs and more than a dozen feature films. A new television series is also on the way in 2017 with Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, American Gods) serving as co-creator and executive producer.

Star Trek Beyond

I really love this poster. I mean it feels like a Star Trek poster and it's sort of an omage to older films. It honestly looks like a tribute to the Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country poster which I'll post below for comparison. I;m glad the second trailer was able to get me back on board for the film because I've been a huge fan of the new films so far and I think this one could be the most emotional one yet. I'm also excited that they are going in a new direction and exploring new planets instead of the same ones we already know.

Welcome to the jungle, we’ve got apes and Jane! Warner Bros. Pictures (via Fandango) has released a new poster for The Legend of Tarzan which you can check out in the gallery below! From David Yates (director of the last four Harry Potter films), the new take on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ jungle hero stars Alexander Skarsgård (“True Blood,” Battleship) in the title role alongside a cast that also includes Margot Robbie, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz and Djimon Hounsou. The jungle adventure hits theaters July 1. The film begins years after the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.  Tarzan made his first appearance in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 1912 novel “Tarzan of the Apes.” The jungle hero would go to be the focus of an additional 23 novels by the author. In the century since the character’s inception, Tarzan has been adapted into just about every medium, including dozens of different feature film iterations.

The Legend of Tarzan

This is a really great poster. It looks mean and fierce, which is what I expect from this film. I love how the apes are surrounding both Tarzan and Jane and they look ready to fight. I think this film is going to be action packed for most of the film with a little bit of an origin story. With the cast in the film and David Yates behind the camera, I think this is going to be the surprise hit of the year.

STX Entertainment has just brought online a new Free State of Jones movie trailer below and you can take a look at the upcoming Civil War action drama, starring Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar, Dallas Buyers Club). TWritten and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit, Pleasantville), the Free State of Jones movie offers an epic action-drama set during the Civil War, and tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War. The film co-stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Beyond the Lights), Keri Russell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and Mahershala Ali (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, “House of Cards”). The film is being produced by Scott Stuber (Ted, Safe House) through his Blue Grass Films shingle, with Jon Kilik (Foxcatcher, The Hunger Games) producing through his Jon Kilik Productions, and Ross producing through his Larger Than Life Productions. STX Entertainment will release the movie nationwide on June 24.

This was a great trailer. It was a little short, but in that short period of time, I got really excited to see the film. Matthew McConaughey looks like he's back to his oldself from the year of McConaughey a couple years ago and this role could land him another Oscar nomination. This film film along with Birth of a Nation are going to really hit home on the ridiculous #OscarsSoWhite campaign with audiences and it'll be hard for the Academy to not nominate these films in some way.
