5-5-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Entertainment Weekly has our first official look at the Power Rangers costumes from the upcoming reboot! “It’s tricky finding a new language for a superhero costume,” production designer Andrew Menzies (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) tells the magazine. “Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.” You can check out the Power Rangers costumes below.  Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late. The Power Rangers cast includes Dacre Montgomery (A Few Less Men) as Jason the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Becky G (Empire) as Trini the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack the Black Ranger, and Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect, The Hunger Games franchise) as Rita Repulsa. Directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac), Power Rangers is written by John Gatins (Kong: Skull Island, Real Steel), Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (Dracula Untold), Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor), and Max Landis (Chronicle). Producers are Power Rangers creator Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Wyck Godfrey, and Marty Bowen (The Twilight Saga, The Fault in Our Stars, The Maze Runner franchise). Now shooting in Vancouver, the new Power Rangers hits the big screen March 24, 2017.

I really like these costumes. Being a fan of Power Rangers as a kid and sorta reconnecting with them here recently, I knew that the studio was going to change up the costumes for a new generation and I didn't expect something like this. I mean yes they do look like Iron Man suits, but this armor is 20x better than the original spandex and it really gives the Rangers a more modern look for them. My only complaint is that there is too much black in the Blue Ranger suit, but other than that I enjoy them a lot. I'm really excited for the film and I'm dying to see a trailer and to see these costumes in action.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the final The Nice Guys trailer along with a slew of new photos. The film, starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, hits theaters on May 20. You can check out The Nice Guys trailer below! From Silver Pictures, The Nice Guys takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, when down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Gosling) and hired enforcer Jackson Healy (Crowe) must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power. The Nice Guys also stars young actress Angourie Rice, Matt Bomer, Margaret Qualley, Keith David and Kim Basinger. Shane Black directs the film from an original screenplay he wrote with Anthony Bagarozzi. Joel Silver is producing with Ken Kao, Hal Sadoff, Alex Walton and Michael J. Malone serving as executive producers. The behind-the-scenes creative team includes Oscar-winning director of photography Philippe Rousselot, production designer Richard Bridgland, editor Joel Negrón and costume designer Kym Barrett. The score was composed by John Ottman & David Buckley. The Nice Guys is set to debut in theaters on May 20, 2016.

This was a hilarious trailer and I think it might be the funniest trailer released yet for this film. Now while it's a funny trailer, that necessarily isn't a good thing because every new trailer that has been released have given is more and new jokes and I'm afraid they may have given us a lot of the jokes in the film and they may have given the ending away with the ending of this trailer. I'm a Shane Black fan and I look forward to anything he does but it may have been a little spoiled. I'm looking forward to seeing a mix between Lethal Weapon and L.A. Confidential and I think this film will be pretty great.

Lionsgate has revealed a new trailer for Now You See Me 2, which is set for a June 10 release. You can check out the Now You See Me 2 trailer below. The Four Horsemen return for a second mind-bending adventure, elevating the limits of stage illusion to new heights and taking them around the globe. One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public’s adulation with their Robin Hood-style magic spectacles, the illusionists resurface for a comeback performance in hopes of exposing the unethical practices of a tech magnate. The man behind their vanishing act is none other than Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe), a tech prodigy who threatens the Horsemen into pulling off their most impossible heist yet. Their only hope is to perform one last unprecedented stunt to clear their names and reveal the mastermind behind it all. With a screenplay by Ed Solomon and Pete Chiarelli, Now You See Me 2 stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Lizzy Caplan, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman. Lizzy Caplan is stepping in for Isla Fisher and Jay Chou and Daniel Radcliffe also star. Jon M. Chu recently announced he would return to the director’s chair for Now You See Me 3.

This was a pretty short, but effective trailer. I mean the trailer do didn't do much, but it did give us a little bit more insight to what the film's plot is going to be and I think it's a pretty darn good one. I'm curious to see how the events of the first film will play into this film and how much will we see of Daniel Radcliffe and Michael Caine on screen together as the "villains". I think this film will be fun to watch, but with Jon M. Chu directing I don't want to get my hopes up too high.

CBS Films and Lionsgate announced today that Melissa Benoist (Supergirl), Emmy-nominee Khandi Alexander (Scandal, Treme) and Jake Picking (Goat, The Way Way Back) have joined Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman, J.K. Simmons, Michelle Monaghan, Kevin Bacon, Michael Beach, Jimmy O. Yang, Vincent Curatola, Alex Wolff, James Colby, Themo Melikidze, Rachel Brosnahan and Christopher O’Shea in the Patriots Day cast. The film is being directed by Peter Berg (Deepwater Horizon, Lone Survivor) and produced by Scott Stuber, Mark Wahlberg, Hutch Parker, Dylan Clark, Stephen Levinson, Dorothy Aufiero and Michael Radutzky. Patriots Day chronicles the events surrounding the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing. Benoist is playing Katherine Russell, Alexander is playing a law enforcement interrogator and Picking is playing MIT Police Officer Sean Collier. The film is being co-financed by CBS Films and Lionsgate with the former handling production and marketing and the latter handling distribution. UTA and Anonymous Content represent Melissa Benoist. Khandi Alexander is represented by Green & Associates. Innovative Artists and Management 360 represent Jake Picking. The film is currently in production in Boston and will open in Boston, New York and Los Angeles on December 21, 2016.

I really like this casting. Now say what you will about Supergirl (I have no say because I don't watch it), but the one thing people do agree on is the fact that Melissa Benoist is pretty darn good on the show as Supergirl. From what little I've seen of the show, I thought she was decent and I think she could be a good fit for this film. Now she'll be an interesting character in the film as she'll be one of the bombers wives so I don't know how people will look her, but I think she could knock the role out of the park.

Lionsgate has announced a release date for director Mel Gibson’s latest, the true World War II tale Hacksaw Ridge, which stars Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths and Vince Vaughn in the story of Corporal Demond Doss, the first conscientious objector to receive the US congressional Medal of Honor. The Hacksaw Ridge release date is a wide release planned for November 4, 2016. Doss, who will be played by Garfield, was drafted into World War II at age 23. Raised a Seventh-day Adventist, he refused to kill or carry a weapon and, as such, became stationed as a medic. President Harry S. Truman presented Doss with his commendation on November 1, 1945, citing numerous acts of bravery and sacrifice performed by Doss in the line of duty. Doss was the only American soldier to serve on the front lines without a weapon, and single-handedly saved the lives of 75 men. Hacksaw Ridge is scripted by Robert Schenkkan and Randall Wallace, the latter of whom worked with Gibson on Braveheart. The center of the story is likely to focus on 1945’s three-month military assault Operation Iceburg, also known as the Battle of Okinawa. “Hacksaw Ridge” was the name given the location of a particularly brutal two-week confrontation wherein United States troops faced off against Japanese soldiers on the rocky cliffs of Okinawa. Bill Mechanic, Brian Oliver, David Permut, Terry Benedict, Paul Currie, Bruce Davey, William D. Johnson and Tyler Thompson produced Hacksaw Ridge through Cross Creek Pictures, Demarest Media, Pandemonium, Permut Presentations and Gibson’s Icon Productions.

This is a very interesting release date. On one hand, it's a great date for a film that could be positioned for a possible Oscar run if the film is in fact good and generally Mel Gibson films are films that are would-be Oscar contenders. On the other hand, it's going up against Doctor Strange and it doesn't look like that Hacksaw Ridge is going to make a whole lot of moment and I think the studio is fine with that as long as it can get some Oscar buzz because they'll be able to make it up after nominations come out if it does get nominations. The film itself sounds really interesting and it's a film that I'd be willing to see simply because of Gibson directing and I think it could be something very special.
