So I recently watched The Nice Guys and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...
Holland March (played by Ryan Gosling) is a down-on-his-luck private eye in 1977 Los Angeles. Jackson Healy (played by Russell Crowe) is a hired enforcer who hurts people for a living. Fate turns them into unlikely partners after a young woman named Amelia (played by Margaret Qualley) mysteriously disappears. Healy and March soon learn the hard way that some dangerous people are also looking for Amelia. Their investigation takes them to dark places as anyone else who gets involved in the case seems to wind up dead.
This is such a fun an entertaining film. Shane Blakc is a phenomenal director, but he's an even better writer and it's shown in this film. It really hearkens back to films Shane Black use to do and you can see small little snippets of both Lethal Weapon (he wrote the first two films) and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (a film he directed) and it feels like a mixture of those two film, with a little bit of the film noir feel that you got in a film like L.A. Confidential. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling give outstanding performances and their chemistry is spot on perfect that it makes their relationship seem real and it just makes the film more enjoyable. There are a lot of jokes in the film which is one Black's trademarks in his films, however at some points in the film the jokes seem to start to take over and they overshadow the film and the story that it was trying to tell. Along with the comedy, there is a fair amount of violence in the film and those scenes are the ones that can keep you moving right along with the film. It does at times feel like a spoof film of an era that has long passed us by and the film should've taken a little bit more serious route. Overall it's a fun buddy-cop film that is easy to enjoy and watch, but the story is often overshadowed by humor and unnecessary filler material. I give The Nice Guys an 8.5 out of 10.
So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of The Nice Guys, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
