James Bond is one of the most iconic figures in film history, but little do people know that he was based off of the novel written by the great Ian Fleming and it started all the way back in 1953 with the novel Casino Royal. Most of the titles of the James Bond films have been named after books, but the past 2 have not followed that formula (mostly because it had something to with a key important place or organization in the film) and to be honest I think the next film does need to get back to using it for the next couple of films. Now with Daniel Craig possibly not returning for the next film they could go a different route with a title, but with everything established in Spectre you have to follow a certain path. With that being said I'm going to bring you my top 10 choices for the James Bond film storyline. I'll give the title of the book, the front cover of the book and a brief synopsis of the book (in italics) and also explain why it can work as a James Bond film. Now I know this is a film blog, but since it deals with a film character it technically fits my criteria as film related. So without further ado...
10. Colonel Sun
M is kidnapped and Bond follows the trail to a Greek Aegean island, where he, and Ariadne Alexandrou, a Greek Communist agent, plan to rescue him. M is held by Colonel Sun, a member of the Chinese People's Liberation Army who is in league with a former Nazi, Von Ritcher. Bond battles them both with the help of Ariadne and a friend of her father.
This would be a fascinating story to tell simply because of the usage of M who is played by Ralph Finnes and it would give him a major storyline and quite a few more scenes. Plus it introduces two villains which haven't much of or if at all in the Bond franchise so it would be a nice way to shake things up a little
9. Role of Honour
Bond is sacked from MI6 to go undercover and is subsequently hired by SPECTRE. He joins Jay Autem Holy, a SPECTRE agent and becomes involved in a plot to destabilise the Soviet Union and the United States, by forcing them to rid the world of their nuclear weapons: a plot he foils with the help of Miss 'Percy' Proud, a CIA agent.
This would be a very intriguing way to go. With Spectre now established in the current Bond franchise there are a lot of different ways you can build off of the plot in Spectre. If you've seen Spectre then you know that MI6 isn't in the best of shape so it fits right along with that. It would also be a character arch for Bond to join the one organization who has given him the most trouble.
8. Nobody Lives Forever
A price is put on Bond's head by Tamil Rahani, the current leader of SPECTRE, who is dying from wounds received in Role of Honour. Bond's housekeeper, May, and Moneypenny are both missing and Bond attempts to find them whilst avoiding the assassins who are attempting to kill him.
If they were to go with Role of Honour then this would be a great sequel to continue the franchise. Also much like Colonel Sun, it lets Bond go on a search and rescue mission for Miss Moneypenny who is played currently by Naomie Harris and it would give her a chance to shine in certain scenes. Plus it also helps keep Spectre at the forefront of the franchise (much like a novel I will discuss at number 3).
7. SeaFire
Bond investigates Max Tarn, a billionaire business tycoon who is determined to reunite Germany under a new Fourth Reich. Tarn is also involved in eco-terrorism with a massive oil spill fire in Puerto Rico.
This would be a really extreme way to go for a Bond film. In today's society there a lot of people who support what Hitler and the Fourth Reich did and the film would deal with a few real-world problems. Plus the fact that the villains name is Max Tarn just sounds really awesome and I think this would be a great way for Bond to connect with several things going on in today's society.
6. Cold
The crash of a Boeing 747-400 at Dulles International Airport and the supposed death of Bond's friend and former lover, the Principessa Sukie Tempesta leads Bond on a personal revenge mission that uncovers a fanatical society, COLD: the Children of the Last Days.
I think this is a really dark take on Bond. As mentioned he would be on a revenge mission and that could make Bond an extremely violent man when he wants answers. It also introduces another secret society if they wanted to put Spectre on the back burner for future films. The society also sounds menacing, but I think introducing another society would be too much.
5. High Time to Kill
A top secret British formula hidden in microfilm, codenamed "Skin 17" was stolen by two traitors who plan to sell it to the terrorist organisation "The Union". The microfilm is on a plane that crashes in the Himalayas and Bond climbs Mount Kangchenjunga to retrieve it.
I think this is good storyline simply because it has that one item everyone in the world wants. It would also introduce another secret organization for Bond to fight with if Spectre is to be put on hold for a while so it can reestablish itself (with a film that'll be mentioned at number 3). Eventhough it is high on my wishlist, I don't think it will happen because a lot of Bond films have used a snowy mountain int the films so it would almost feel like the same movie over and over again.
4. DoubleShot
After he foiled their plans, terrorist organisation The Union target Bond with a plan to plunge Britain into war and destroy Bond's reputation in the process by having a Bond double kill the British Prime Minister and the Governor of Gibraltar.
If the previous entry becomes a film then this would be a nice follow-up for several reasons. One it again establishes a new organization and it keep them relevant within the universe. It also (like High Time to Kill) keeps Spectre out of the way for another film and I think that will be a nice enough break for the organization in the franchise (and they could come back with the next film I'm going to mention).
3. For Special Services
Bond teams up with CIA agent Cedar Leiter, daughter of Felix, to investigate Markus Bismaquer, who is suspected of reviving SPECTRE. Bond establishes SPECTRE are to take over the NORAD headquarters in order to gain control of America's military space satellite network. Bond foils the plot and finds that Bismaquer's wife, Nena, is the daughter of Blofeld and the head of SPECTRE.
I think this is the perfect story to go with. If you've seen Spectre then you know what happens in the end and it would be a nice way to continue on from where Christoph Waltz's character left off. Now granted Bond would be working with another person's daughter like he does in Spectre, but it would different to see Bond in America. Also it makes this villain more credible because he is doing his wife's bidding to get revenge on Bond.
2. Never Dream of Dying
Bond is again in the hunt for The Union and is chasing Le Gerant, the Blind head of the organisation. After a police raid goes wrong René Mathis goes after Le Gerant, followed by Bond.
If numbers 4 and 5 happen this could complete the trilogy with The Union as the main villain. A connective trilogy is something that we've never seen in the Bond franchise. What I mean by that is that the main villain hasn't been the same for three Bond films in a row and that would be a nice change of pace to the franchise. It would surely make The Union a recognizable name in the franchise and in pop culture.
1. Devil May Care
Bond investigates Julius Gorner, a businessman who is producing heroin that threatens England, as well as wanting to attack the Soviets, who will retaliate against Britain.
This is one of very few James Bond books I have read and that's why it's the number one film on the list. It's a film that wouldn't involve any type of special organization, but it instead focuses on a simple man being corrupt and a thorn in not only Bond's side, but to whole countries. It would be set as a race against the clock mission for Bond to stop the madman before two countries begin World War 3.
So ladies and gentlemen what do you think should be the next Bond film storyline and what do you think of my choices/thought? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
