11-23-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

After two weeks of release, director/star Angelina Jolie’s relationship drama By the Sea has yet to cross the million dollar mark at the worldwide box office, but in spite of its perceived failure-to-launch, it could still prove a boon to Universal Pictures. In an article from The Hollywood Reporter about the studio’s tactics in greenlighting the art house film, it supposedly did so because they want Jolie to headline their remake of the 1935 camp horror classic The Bride of Frankenstein. First announced in 2009, the Bride redo was being developed as a directing vehicle for Neil Burger (Limitless, Divergent), to be produced by Brian Grazer and Sean Daniel with a screenplay by Burger and Dirk Wittenborn (The Lucky Ones). Although the article states Grazer is still the active producer, there’s no confirmation one way or the other about Burger’s involvement, although he certainly has more clout than he did in ’09. There is also no mention of whether Bride of Frankenstein would be integrated into the shared cinematic Monster Universe that Universal is developing under writers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan. The Morgan-scripted 2008 action hit Wanted may also be getting a sequel, as the article hints that the studio would like Angelina Jolie to star in Wanted 2, although that has been batting around the studio for some time with little movement. Ultimately, Jolie is rumored to favor in-development sequels to more recent hits like Maleficent or Salt if she wanted to go the franchise route, a path she has avoided since the failure of 2003’s Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. The original Bride of Frankenstein was directed by James Whale and starred Boris Karloff as the monster and Elsa Lanchester as the titular bride, continuing the story that began with 1931’s Frankenstein. Compared to its predecessor it was a much lighter, more surreal film made with a certain degree of mocking meta humor, including an opening featuring Lanchester as author Mary Shelley.

This is really interesting news to hear. Angelina Jolie is one of the most talented actress of all-time and now she is shifting more towards the directing realm, bu this is a pretty perfect role. She is a very beautiful woman and eventhough the Bride of Frankenstein is monstrous she was made from a gorgeous woman and Angelia Jolie fits that description. I think she would bring a different take to the character and I she was meant for this role and I hope this film comes to fruition.

Paramount Pictures and Regency Enterprises have just released a new The Big Short movie trailer and, in the player below, you can take a look at the upcoming Adam McKay film, starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt! The Big Short movie hits theaters in a limited release December 11 before expanding wide on December 23. A true story, The Big Short movie follows four outsiders who saw what the big banks, media and government refused to: the pending global collapse of the economy. They had an idea: The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything. The Big Short movie cast also includes Melissa Leo, Hamish Linklater, John Magaro, Rafe Spall, Jeremy Strong, Marisa Tomei and Finn Wittrock. The Big Short movie is based on the true story and best-selling book by Michael Lewis (The Blind Side, Moneyball), and directed by Adam Mckay (Anchorman, Step Brothers). The Big Short is a Plan B Entertainment production. The film is executive produced by Louise Rosner-Meyer and Kevin Messick, with Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Arnon Milchan serving as producers. Charles Randolph and Adam McKay wrote the script.

This was a great trailer. From the moment I heard about this film and from the first trailer I thought this movie could be special and this trailer backs that statement up. The film gives off a mixture of Wall Street and The Wolf of Wall Street vibe and if this movie is as good as those then this could be the best film of the year. You can see Adam McKay's subtle sense of humor to this film and I think it will blend well with the story being told. This is one of the best casts I've seen all year and I'm really looking forward to seeing this film.

Focus Features has debuted the official poster for Race, the biopic of legendary Olympic athlete Jesse Owens, which you can check out below. The film is based on the incredible true story of Jesse Owens, the legendary athletic superstar whose quest to become the greatest track and field athlete in history thrusts him onto the world stage of the 1936 Olympics, where he faces off against Adolf Hitler’s vision of Aryan supremacy. Race is an enthralling film about courage, determination, tolerance, and friendship, and an inspiring drama about one man’s fight to become an Olympic legend. Race stars Stephan James (Selma) as Owens along with Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses, We’re the Millers), Jeremy Irons (“The Borgias,” Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Shanice Banton (“Haven,” “Lost Girl”), William Hurt (A History of Violence, “Humans”), and Carice van Houten (“Game of Thrones,” Valkyrie) as German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, who documented the historical event. Directed by Stephen Hopkins (“House of Lies,” The Ghost and the Darkness), the Jesse Owens biopic is set to open in theaters on February 19, 2016.

Race

This is a really great poster. It embodies who Jesse Owens was as an athlete and I like how they put the Nazi flags in the back to show what he was dealing with back in 1936. This isn't the only Jesse Owens bio-pic coming out as Anthony Mackie will be doing one sometime next year as well so It'll be interesting to see how these two films will compare to each other. The film has a great cast and this is going to be an interesting film.

Walt Disney Animation Studios has debuted the new trailer for their animated feature Zootopia, which takes place in a world in which animals have evolved into human behavior. You can check out the Zootopia trailer below. Directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore and co-directed by Jared Bush, Zootopia takes place in the animal-filled city of the same name, as it follows optimistic Officer Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin). She discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery. Other characters and the actors who will voice them include Shakira as Gazelle, Idris Elba as Chief Bogo (head of the Zootopian Police Department), Octavia Spencer is Mrs. Otterson, J.K. Simmons is Mayor Leodore Lionhearted, Tommy Chong is Yax the Yak (“a most enlightened, laid-back bovine”), Nate Torrence is Benjamin Clawhauser, Jenny Slate is Assistant Mayor Bellwether (“a sweet sheep with a little voice and a lot of wool”), Alan Tudyk is Duke Weaselton (“a small-time weasel crook with a big-time mouth”), Raymond Persi is Flash (“the fastest sloth working at Zootopia’s DMV — the Department of Mammal Vehicles”) and Bonny Hunt and Don Lake are the voices of Judy Hopps’ mother and father, Bonnie and Stu (“a carrot farmer from Bunnyburrow”). The comedy-adventure is directed by Byron Howard (Tangled, Bolt) and Rich Moore (Wreck-It Ralph, “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”). Zootopia opens in theaters on March 4, 2016.

This was fantastic trailer. It doesn't give away any of the plot whatsoever so you'll more than likely go into this film blind and that's a great thing. I was a little creeped out by the sloth a little, but I think sloths are creepy anyway so there's that. The trailer was more of a scene than a trailer, but it did what it had to do and now I can't to see the film. Plus it doesn't hurt that it comes out on my birthday.

Last month, it was revealed that 20th Century Fox‘s plans for Neill Blomkamp‘s proposed big screen foray into their Alien universe were in a holding pattern pending the release of Ridley Scott’s prequel Alien: Covenant, which will soon begin production in Australia for an October 6, 2017 release. Now Michael Biehn, who famously portrayed colonial marine Cpl. Dwayne Hicks in the 1986 classic Aliens, has spilled the beans (Biehns?) to Icons of Fright about the sequel, which could potentially see his and Sigourney Weaver’s long-awaited return, as well as another big character from the franchise. “They’re planning on bringing me and Newt back, and at this point Newt will be around twenty-seven years old,” Biehn confirmed. “I know that every actress in Hollywood is going to want to play this one, it’s really a passing of the torch between Sigourney and this younger actress who would play Newt.” Child actress Carrie Henn originally played Rebecca “Newt” Jorden, the sole survivor of the colony on LV-426. Henn retired from acting after playing the role, going on to a career as a teacher, and the character was unceremoniously killed off (and dissected) at the tippy-top of David Fincher’s Alien 3. Fans who disliked seeing the beloved character offed before she and her surrogate family of Ripley and Hicks could have more adventures will be pleased to note that the events of 1992’s Alien 3 and 1997’s Alien: Resurrection will be summarily ignored in Blomkamp’s untitled Alien sequel. “The basic idea is acting like Alien 3 and 4 never existed, so if you go on Neill Blomkamp’s site everyone can see all of the artwork for that,” continued Biehn.

Scott has previously suggested that Alien: Covenant may be followed by additional sequels which could theoretically threaten to delay Neill Blomkamp’s Alien project indefinitely. With no guarantee it will ever come to fruition, Biehn remains hopeful and suggests that it would be in everyone’s best interest to have Alien 5 see the light of day. “I know Ridley Scott is doing his movie first and is going to be the executive producer on this one, so I’m really looking forward to that,” Biehn says. “I know that Ridley’s focus is on the second ‘Prometheus’ and I’m sure that he and Fox both don’t want that and Neill’s movie to come out right next to each other, because they’re kind of two different worlds, with ‘Aliens’ taking place thousands of years later, which is how they explained it all to me, but at the same time, they want to give them a similar feel. I know they’re putting the brakes on Neill’s movie just for a little while, but I really think that it would be embarrassing to Ridley and Fox and Sigourney if they just didn’t make the movie.”

This would be an interesting story. Newt is a character who had a major role in the franchise and I think it would be neat to see a film based on her. Now I kinda wonder if Sigourney Weaver is going to come back for the film, but it will be interesting to see if this gets made. I think this film will get made, just not with Neil Blomkamp after the disaster that was Chappie so you can see why this film will get delayed and delayed until Neil Blomkamp is taken off of the project. I want to see this film and I'm excited to see who they get to replace Blomkamp.
