11-17-15/11-18-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Since I didn't get to bring you news from yesterday I figured that I would combine today's and yesterday's news (3 stories from each day). So here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Val Kilmer took to his Facebook page this morning to confirm that he has been asked back for the long-gestating Top Gun 2, in which he will reprise the role of “Iceman.” “I just got offered ‪Top Gun 2,” he writes. “Not often you get to say “yes” without reading the script… We will all miss Tony Scott one of the kindest gentlemen I’ve ever met in the film biz, but let’s fire up some fighter jets again!!!” The Top Gun sequel, a follow-up to Tony Scott’s 1986 hit, has been in the works for quite some time with Tom Cruise interested in reprising his role as United States Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Scott was interested in returning to the director’s chair himself prior to his tragic passing. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer previously outlined that the film will deal with the rise of unmanned drones and pilots becoming a thing of the past. “The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones? [Tom Cruise as Maverick] is going to show them that they’re not obsolete. They’re here to stay,” Bruckheimer said. Screenwriter Justin Marks (The Jungle Book) penned the most recent draft of the script, following a draft by Peter Craig (The Town).

This is great news to hear. If you've seen the original Top Gun then you know how important of a character Iceman was to the story and his rivalry with Maverick fueled the entire story. However I am a little surprised that Kilmer is coming back. If you haven't seen Val Kilmer lately then you'll know that he exceeds the weight limit to get in a fighter jet. Now I'm not the skinniest guy in the world, but Kilmer has really let himself go. I honestly think he'll end up with a small cameo and he'll be working behind a desk that way he won't do much. To be honest the only reason why he is coming back is because he is irrelevant to the public and he's going back to a role that people know him for which is what a few actors are doing (i.e. Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Willis). hopefully the film gets made soon because Tom Cruise isn't getting any younger.

Though Lara Croft’s most recent adventure in the world of video games was recently released, the quest to reboot the property on the big screen has been a long one. Now, however, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the Tomb Raider reboot has found its director in Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug (The Wave). In addition, Transformers 5 scribe Geneva Robertson-Dworet has come on board to write the screenplay for the adaptation. Warner Bros. is set to distribute the film with MGM. They will produce the feature with GK Films. The original game was published in 1996 by the London-based video game company Eidos and became one of the most successful video games of the time. A reboot of the series, telling the origin of Lara Croft, was released in 2013 and sold over 5 million copies. The most recent game, titled Rise of the Tomb Raider, is available now for the Xbox One and Xbox 360. Paramount Pictures previously made two movies about the daredevil archaeologist on a series of global missions. The films, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life,  starred Angelina Jolie and grossed a combined $432 million at the worldwide box office.

I honestly don't know how to feel about this. First off Tomb Raider is a franchise that could've been fantastic but the second film just didn't live up to the hype of the first film. Second of all I think it's great that they are trying to reboot the film franchise now that the games are popular once again. Another thing is the fact that they got an unknown guy to direct the film and I feel like a more notable person should've taken the job. Come to think of it Lexi Alexander would've been perfect for the job. Hopefully the film can be better than the other films and create a new franchise.

Two years ago, it was revealed that Universal was eager to take their slate of classic monster movies and revive them into their own shared cinematic universe, and producers Alex Kurtzman (Transformers) and Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious) officially began developing the Universal Monsters Universe last year. Speaking with Variety, Morgan and Kurtzman opened up about their intentions with the films and how they’re currently working on establishing it. “This is not a heightened world,” Morgan says. “We’re exploring issues of family identity and questions of, ‘Where do I belong in the world?’ ” “We’re creating a mythology, so we’re looking at this canon and thinking, ‘What are the rules?’ ” Kurtzman added. “What can we break and what are the ones that are untouchable? The idea is that we have a deep bench of brains to consult with about how their monster fits into our world as we go forward.” “The characters will interact with each other across movies,” says Donna Langley, chair of Universal Pictures. “We’re incubating it at the moment, and we’re taking the time to get it right.” The outlet notes that in addition to several writers already working on scripts, designers and storyboard artists are also working on the overall look for the films. Universal is currently planning on releasing one of the monster movies a year with potential films focusing on Dracula, Van Helsing, Bride of Frankenstein and the Wolfman. The first film in the shared monster universe that fans will get to see is The Mummy, which Kurtzman will direct from a script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus). The Mummy reboot is set for release on March 24, 2017, with another Untitled Universal Monster Movie set to follow it on March 30, 2018. “Fargo” executive producer Noah Hawley is currently writing one of the films in the series, with Prisoners scribe Aaron Guzikowski penning the reboot of The Wolfman.

I really like these comments. I like how the studio is taking their time with this idea because time is something this absolutely needs and you want to make sure that every film you do is right so that you don't have to scrap all of your plans (i.e. The Amazing Spider-Man franchise). I also like how they are going to make the films have a sense of realism to them with the characters wondering who they are and what is their place and I think that will work very well. The universe was supposed to start with Dracula: Untold, but that film sucked so they couldn't create a universe so they've already wasted one shot and they can't fail this time around.

Paramount Pictures has brought online the Zoolander 2 trailer starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, which you can check out below. “It’s ten years later and most of it is set in Europe,” Stiller previously said of the script. “It’s basically Derek and Hansel ten years later – though the last movie ended on a happy note a lot of things have happened in the meantime. Their lives have changed and they’re not really relevant anymore. It’s a new world for them.” The movie begins a decade later with Derek and Hansel literally forgotten. Nobody even knows who they are, so they have to re-invent themselves. Stiller is directing the sequel and co-wrote the script with Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder). Stiller is also producing Zoolander 2 alongside Stuart Cornfeld for a February 12, 2016 release. Owen Wilson is returning as Hansel, and the cast also includes Penélope Cruz, Christine Taylor, Kristen Wiig and Cyrus Arnold, with special appearances expected by Will Ferell as Jacobim Mugatu, Billy Zane, Fred Armisen, Justin Bieber, Kyle Mooney, Kim Kardashian, Ariana Grande, and more. Zoolander 2 was filmed for 12 weeks in Rome in and around the famed Cinecittà Studios. The first Zoolander was released on September 28, 2001 by Paramount Pictures and earned $60.8 million worldwide on a $28 million budget.

That was a fantastic trailer. I absolutely loved the first film so much and the announcement of a sequel got me really excited. The first trailer that came out was a little weird for my taste, but this one is just great. I was laughing a lot and the plot of the film seems so ridiculous, but I love it. Hopefully the best jokes weren't in the trailer becasue this film has a lot of potential to be brilliant.

Lionsgate has debuted the first official trailer for the magic-themed caper Now You See Me 2 and you can watch the trailer below. The Four Horsemen return for a second mind-bending adventure, elevating the limits of stage illusion to new heights and taking them around the globe. One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public’s adulation with their Robin Hood-style magic spectacles, the illusionists resurface for a comeback performance in hopes of exposing the unethical practices of a tech magnate. The man behind their vanishing act is none other than Walter Mabry, a tech prodigy who threatens the Horsemen into pulling off their most impossible heist yet. Their only hope is to perform one last unprecedented stunt to clear their names and reveal the mastermind behind it all. With a screenplay by Ed Solomon and Pete Chiarelli, Now You See Me 2 stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Dave Franco, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman all return for the sequel, which sees Lizzy Caplan stepping in for Isla Fisher along with Jay Chou and Daniel Radcliffe also starring. The Jon M. Chu-directed film is scheduled to hit theaters on June 10, 2016 with a third film already in the planning stages at the studio.

This was a nice teaser trailer. It gave no plot away whatsoever and it kinda got me excited to see the film. I really enjoyed the first film and to be honest I had to watch it a few times just so I could catch everything that went on. The one thing that scares me to death about the film is Jon M. Chu directing because he is the absolute worst when it comes to directing movies (Jem and the Holograms anyone?) and I hope he doesn't mess this up because there is a lot of potential in the film. Daniel Radcliffe looks like a fantastic addition to the cast and I can't wait to see how is character plays out on the film.

Universal Pictures has released the trailer for The Huntsman Winter’s War, featuring the returning Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth (as the Evil Queen Ravenna and The Huntsman Eric, respectively), as well as introductory looks at both Jessica Chastain’s Warrior Sara and Emily Blunt’s Ice Queen Freya. You check out The Huntsman Winter’s War trailer below. The fantastical world of Snow White and the Huntsman expands to reveal how the fates of The Huntsman Eric and Queen Ravenna are deeply and dangerously intertwined. Long before the evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) was thought vanquished by Snow White’s blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya (Blunt), suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom. With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen—including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain)—only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love. When Freya learns of her sister’s demise, she summons her remaining soldiers to bring the Magic Mirror home to the only sorceress left who can harness its power. But once she discovers Ravenna can be resurrected from its golden depths, the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it’s ever seen. Now, their amassing army shall prove undefeatable…unless the banished huntsmen who broke their queen’s cardinal rule can fight their way back to one another. Directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, The Huntsman Winter’s War is produced by Joe Roth (Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland). Look for it to hit theaters on April 22, 2016.

This was a pretty bland trailer. Don't get me wrong it had a lot of nice visuals, but it just didn't get me excited. The film seems unnecessary because what's the point of knowing how the huntsman became the huntsman. The film also seems like a really dark version of Frozen that's not something I want to see at all. I also thought the explanation of who each of the four main characters are was a bit too much. The film looks beautiful, but I don't expect the quality to be outstanding.
