11-12-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

It’s almost time to head to a galaxy far, far away, and Lucasfilm has debuted another new poster for the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens taking us to Jakku with Daisy Ridley’s Rey and her companion BB-8. Check out the official The Force Awakens IMAX poster below. Opening in theaters on December 18, 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, and features a new generation of swashbuckling heroes and shadowy villains, as well as the return of fan-favorite smugglers, princesses, and Jedi. Directed by J.J. Abrams, the highly-anticipated movie stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Max Von Sydow. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk are producing with Tommy Harper and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers. The screenplay is by Lawrence Kasdan & J.J. Abrams and Michael Arndt. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be followed on December 16, 2016 by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Star Wars: Episode VIII on May 26, 2017, and the Han Solo anthology movie on May 25, 2018. No release dates have been announced for Star Wars: Episode IX or for the third anthology movie. It was recently confirmed, however, that Jurassic World‘s Colin Trevorrow will be helming the third Saga chapter.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens IMAX Poster

This is a really great IMAX poster. It's a beautiful image and it really puts the focus on Daisy Ridley's character Rey. With that it kinda confirms that Rey is going to be the ultimate protagonist and like that because we've never had a female be the main character of the Star Wars Saga. I also like how they put BB-8 in the poster because she (yes BB-8 is a she) is going to be the new R2-D2 and I really like that as well. Another thing that stands out is Rey's staff and with everything that has been rumored (especially dealing with the story below) it is going to mean a whole lot in the franchise. All this poster does is ramp up my excitement for the film.

“There has been an awakening, have you felt it?” The first words spoken in the first teaser of Star Wars: The Force Awakens come from a voice off screen, and that voice belongs to motion-capture maestro Andy Serkis and his character in the film, Supreme Leader Snoke. “It’s the first time I’ve been on set not yet knowing what the character’s gonna look like. I mean talk about secrecy!” Serkis tells EW. “When we first started working on it, he had some rough notions of how Snoke was gonna look, but it really hadn’t been fully-formed and it almost came out of discussion and performance.” Serkis goes on to describe that character’s personality and physical traits, saying: “Supreme Leader Snoke is quite an enigmatic character, and strangely vulnerable at the same time as being quite powerful. Obviously he has a huge agenda. He has suffered a lot of damage. As I said, there is a strange vulnerability to him, which belies his true agenda, I suppose…He is large. He appears tall. And also just the facial design – you couldn’t have gotten there with prosthetics. It’s too extreme. Without giving too much away at this point, he has a very distinctive, idiosyncratic bone structure and facial structure. You could never have done it [in real life.]” When asked if his character was formed by being a part of the initial Galactic Civil War between the Rebels and the Empire of the original trilogy, Serkis said: “He’s aware of what’s gone on, in the respect that he has been around and is aware of prior events. I think it’d be fair to say that he is aware of the past to a great degree.” Opening in theaters on December 18, 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, and features a new generation of swashbuckling heroes and shadowy villains, as well as the return of fan-favorite smugglers, princesses, and Jedi.

I really love these comments. First off let me just say that I am so glad that Andy Serkis is in the film and all it does is make him a bigger star. Another thing that's great is that he hasn't even seen the final product of what his character looks like and that just build upon my anticipation. The one thing that stands out from the rest is the quote where he says that his character is aware of what has happened and that he has been around. Now I be reading too much into this, but I think this basically confirms that he is in fact going to turn out to be Darth Plaguies. I say that because it says he's been around and he knows what's went on in the past and that could mean all the back to before the prequel films or just the original trilogy, but this is something I have been predicting for a while and I just hope this comes true.

Warner Bros. Pictures has, according to The Hollywood Reporter, set screenwriter David Leslie Johnson on director James Wan’s upcoming Aquaman feature film. Johnson, whose past script work has included Wrath of the Titans, Orphan and Red Riding Hood, has already been working with Wan on the upcoming The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist. Jason Momoa will be headlining the Aquaman feature film, which is based on the classic DC Comics sea dwelling superhero. Aquaman made his first comic book appearance way back in 1941’s “More Fun Comics” #73. Created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, Aquaman went on to become a founding member of the Justice League of America two decades later. Until now, the character has never made it to the big screen. Aquaman’s sole live-action appearance was as a teen on the WB’s “Smallville.” The character was planned for a spinoff series, “Mercy Reef,” but the property never made it beyond the pilot stage. Before appearing in his solo film, Momoa’s Aquaman will make his big screen debut in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, set to hit theaters on March 25, 2016. It’s also a near certainty that he’ll be back for Justice League: Part One, arriving November 10, 2017. Aquaman then hits the following summer with Justice League: Part Two following on June 14, 2019. The Aquaman feature was previously scripted by Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: Rise of an Empire). Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder and Zack Snyder are serving as producers.

This makes a lot of sense. I mean granted the guy hasn't really done a lot of great movies (actually none at all), but James Wan is working with him now so it must mean he wants to work with him again. I think this gut can write a good script and it shouldn't be that hard with Aquaman and I'm sure James Wan is going to help. This is a film I'm really looking forward to mainly because of Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry aka Aquaman and I;m excited to see what he does with the character.

Paramount Pictures and Regency Enterprises just released a new theatrical poster for the Adam McKay film The Big Short, starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt. Check out the Big Short poster in the below. When four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to, the global collapse of the economy, they had an idea: The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything. The film is based on the true story and best-selling book by Michael Lewis (The Blind Side, Moneyball), and directed by Adam Mckay (Anchorman, Step Brothers). The Big Short is a Plan B Entertainment production. The film is executive produced by Louise Rosner-Meyer and Kevin Messick, with Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Arnon Milchan serving as producers. Charles Randolph and Adam McKay wrote the script. The film will hit limited theaters on December 11 before expanding wide on December 23.

The Big Short

I really like this poster. It's pretty different from what we are used to and it shows us the main characters of the film. I also like how it has the arrows in a circle as it's sorta showing the connection between each character. So far everything I've seen from the film looks fantastic and this cast is one of the best of the year and I'm excited to see everything come togehter as this could be a really fantastic film in 2015.

The two Fifty Shades of Grey sequels will shoot back-to-back in 2016 with James Foley directing both, reports TheWrap. Foley, who is famous for such films as Glengarry Glen Ross and the Halle Berry thriller Perfect Stranger, was previously said to be the frontrunner for the job to direct the second film, Fifty Shades Darker, but now it’s confirmed he’ll take on the third film, Fifty Shades Freed, as well. The erotically-charged romance Fifty Shades of Grey capitalized on it’s naughty-but-not-too-naughty aesthetic to the tune of more than $570 million worldwide, although on-set conflict between author E L James and director Sam Taylor-Johnson led to the latter and screenwriter Kelly Marcel opting not return for the sequel, which will be penned by James’ husband Niall Leonard. Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson return as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, the second and third chapters based on the worldwide bestselling “Fifty Shades” phenomenon. Expanding upon the events set in motion in Fifty Shades of Grey, the films will again become the motion-picture events for Valentine’s Day 2017 and 2018. Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti, alongside E L James, the creator of the series, also return to produce. Foley has helmed episodes of Netflix’s hit “House of Cards,” which Brunetti also produces.

To be honest this makes sense. Just a little tidbit, it's always cheaper to shoot film back to back as going buy the saying it's better to buy in bulk so doing two films at once is a bulkier job than shooting them separately. Now for the films themselves I could honestly care less about them. I'm not a fan of the books or the first film so it doesn't matter to me. I do however think James Foley is an interesting choice because he is a talented filmmaker and I'm actually curious as to how he came to the conclusion this was a great idea. I often don't like films to fail because people can lose their jobs if a film is bad, but in this instance I hope these films fail.
