Weekend Movie News 1-23-15 to 1-25-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Last month, word first broke that actor Luke Evans may exit the upcoming remake of The Crow and now TheWrap is reporting that Evans has officially departed the project. Relativity Studios is currently on the hunt for another star for the film, which has already had one director drop out in the midst of production. Music video helmer Corin Hardy (The Hallow) is still attached to direct The Crow, which features a script by Cliff Dorfman. Series creator James O’Barr will also work as a creative consultant on the film. No release date is currently set though production has previously been reported to begin later this year. “The Crow” was originally published as a four issue series in 1989 and was adapted into a film in 1994 by Alex Proyas with Brandon Lee in the title role. Countless other sequels to both the comic and film have been produced in the years following.

This really isn't surprising news to hear. Look Luke Evans is a tremendous actor and I thought he would do great in the role, but he has other projects in the works and he needs to move on. For this film to happen the studio needs to act quickly in finding a replacement. I have been campaigning for Jared Leto, but since he will be The Joker I don't think he'll have time for this so my next choice is Tom Hiddleston. I'm a huge fan of the original film and I'm just hoping the remake can do it justice.

Variety recently caught up with actor Jesse Eisenberg to talk up his role in Sundance film The End of the Tour, and got around to discussing his role as villain Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. While the actor didn’t open up about the nature of his hair in the film (clearly shaved if we are to believe a recent photo from Now You See Me: The Second Act), he did say he would be open to reprising the character in future Superman films. “I would love to,” says Eisenberg. “It’s a great group and director, and the most ideal character to play.” Eisenberg has been rumored for some time to be reprising his role as Luthor in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, but despite his clear enthusiasm for the character our readers might be disappointed to find out that Eisenberg wasn’t exactly Superman Fan Numero Uno growing up. “No… I never minded him,” admitting that he only recently caught up with the previous films, “just to understand the context of this one. But no, not as a child.” To be fair, we’re pretty sure Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey probably didn’t have a longbox full of polybagged comics growing up either, and that didn’t deter them from giving a dynamite performance as Lex Luthor. Starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Jena Malone, Holly Hunter and Scoot McNairy, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2016.

This is really great to hear. It's quite obvious that Eisenberg loved playing Luthor and depending on how Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Eisenberg do in the film we could potentially see him in future films. I know a lot of people are against him playing a younger version of the character, but i feel like he will do great in the role and I cannot wait to see the film.

The Weinstein Company announced today that principal photography has begun in Telluride, Colorado on Academy Award winning writer/director Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming feature The Hateful Eight. TWC plans to release The Hateful Eight theatrically in 2015. More supporting cast members have also been announced, most of whom have worked with the filmmaker in the past. James Parks (Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2), Dana Gourrier (Django Unchained), Zoë Bell (Death Proof), Gene Jones (No Country for Old Men), Keith Jefferson (Django Unchained), Lee Horsley (Django Unchained), Craig Stark (Django Unchained) and Belinda Owino (Django Unchained) have all come on board. The lead cast for the film will include: Samuel L. Jackson (Django Unchained), Kurt Russell (Escape From New York), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle), Walton Goggins (“Justified”), Demian Bichir (A Better Life), Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs), Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs), Bruce Dern (Nebraska) and Channing Tatum (Foxcatcher). Written and directed by Tarantino, The Hateful Eight is produced by Richard N. Gladstein, Stacey Sher and Shannon McIntosh. Harvey Weinstein, Bob Weinstein and Georgia Kacandes are executive producing, and Coco Francini and William Paul Clark are associate producing.

In The Hateful Eight, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all… Presented in glorious 70mm, The Hateful Eight marks a continuation of the long-standing relationship between the celebrated filmmaker and the Weinsteins, who have collaborated on all of Tarantino’s films from Reservoir Dogs through Django Unchained.

This is great news to hear. Tarantino is my favorite director of all-time and I'm really glad to see that the has started filming especially after everything that went down with the script getting leaked and this sounds like another amazing work by Tarantino. Like I said I'm really excited for this film and I cannot wait to see Tarantino do another western.

Paul Bettany perhaps has the strangest journey of any of the Marvel Studios actors, beginning as just a voice of Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) J.A.R.V.I.S. He’ll transition into a full physical hero this summer in Avengers: Age of Ultron as The Vision. Speaking with Radio Times, Bettany had high praise for the upcoming sequel. “I’ve never been on a bigger set on my entire life than in The Avengers (Age of Ultron),” the actor says. “One [part] seemed to be the corner of a town, with helicopter cameras, and drone cameras flying about. I just haven’t seen anything that big, so it was like being a kid on a film set again…This is the biggest thing Marvel have ever done. It was enormous. I remember, we were at Comic-con, and they showed a portion of the footage, and I was just gobsmacked. And I looked down the row and every one of the Avengers was the same. Including Samuel Jackson – and his whole modus operandi is ‘I’ve seen everything before, I’m the most chilled out, relaxed man and I’ve seen everything…’and he was as knocked out as anyone. It’s huge.” Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, James Spader, Cobie Smulders, Thomas Kretschmann, Paul Bettany and Stellan Skarsgard. The Joss Whedon-directed film will debut in theaters on May 1, 2015.

These are some really great comments. Paul Bettany (while not physical) has played a key part in the entire MCU and to finally get to see him in a physical form (be it Vision) he can show his remarkable and very underrated acting skills. I'm excited as can be for the film and May cannot get here quick enough.

Although a live-action feature film has been toyed with over the years, Deadline is now reporting that Warner Bros. Pictures has plans to move forward with The Jetsons as a fully animated feature film. According to the outlet, Matt Lieberman has been hired to provide the screenplay. Produced by Hanna-Barbera, the original incarnation of “The Jetsons” followed the success of the studio’s “The Flintstones,” following a nuclear family in a space age future. A primetime series, “The Jetsons” aired Sunday nights on ABC from September 23, 1962 to March 3, 1963. Lieberman is still a relative newcomer to Hollywood with his sole produced credit being the direct to home video franchise sequel Doctor Dolittle: Tail to the Chief. He’s got quite a few other projects in various stages of development, however, including an upcoming remake of Short Circuit, set to be directed by Tim Hill, The Pet, his own original spec script that has Jared Hess attached to helm, and a new theatrical animated Scooby-Doo film, announced back in 2013, among others. George Jetson and his family previously hit the big screen in a 1990 animated film, titled Jetsons: The Movie. Directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, the film posthumously featured original voice talents George O’Hanlon and Mel Blanc.

This is a really great idea. If you are going to do an film version of an animated tv show then make the film animated. In the past that has hurt films like The Flinstones and The Smurfs and these films would have been better if they were animated and just done with voice-work. I really enjoyed watching re-runs of The Jetson's and I'm anxious about the film.
