1-28-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Universal Pictures today announced that principal photography has commenced in San Francisco on the now-officially-titled Steve Jobs. Set backstage at three iconic product launches and ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac, the film aims to take audiences behind the scenes of the digital revolution to paint an intimate portrait of the brilliant man at its epicenter. Steve Jobs is directed by Academy Award winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) and written by Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, “The Newsroom”), working from Walter Isaacson’s best-selling biography of the Apple founder. Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past, 12 Years a Slave) will play Jobs, the pioneering founder of Apple, with the Academy Award-winning Kate Winslet (The Reader, Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind) starring as Joanna Hoffman, former marketing chief of Macintosh. Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple, is played by Seth Rogen (Neighbors, The Interview), and Jeff Daniels (“The Newsroom,” Good Night and Good Luck) stars as former Apple CEO John Sculley. The film also stars Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice, Being Flynn) as Chrisann Brennan, Jobs’ ex-girlfriend, and Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man, “Boardwalk Empire”) as Andy Hertzfeld, one of the original members of the Apple Macintosh development team. Other members of the cast include Perla Haney-Jardine (Future Weather), Ripley Sobo (Winter’s Tale) and Makenzie Moss (Do You Believe?) as young Lisa Brennan at various stages of her life, Sarah Snook (Predestination) as Andrea Cunningham, as well as Adam Shapiro (A Single Man) as Avie Tevanian. Producers on Steve Jobs are Mark Gordon (Saving Private Ryan, Source Code), Guymon Casady (“Game of Thrones,” “Hope Springs”) of Film 360, Scott Rudin and Academy Award winner Christian Colson (Slumdog Millionaire, Selma).

This is really great news to hear. I have been interested in this film from the moment go and I've stuck by its side through everything it has went through. It has a really great premise and this cast is going to be amazing. The film has Oscar bait all over it and I cannot wait to see it.

Paramount Pictures has today adjusted its upcoming slate of horror films, bumping Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension from March 13 of this year to October 23 and moving Friday the 13th from its November 13, 2015 release to May 13, 2016. It’s not all delays, however, as Rings, the third film in the studio’s “The Ring” franchise, will take Friday the 13th‘s original date this November 13. Details are few on the plot of Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, but the new date will bring the film closer in line with the franchise’s traditional Halloween-centric releases. On October 23, The Ghost Dimension will open opposite Breck Eisner’s The Last Witch Hunter (starring Vin Diesel), Jon M. Chu’s ’80s cartoon adaptation Jem and the Holograms, and a still-unrevealed Warner Bros. horror film. Rings, meanwhile, is set to star Matilda Lutz and will open opposite both an untitled New Line comedy and Barry Levinson’s crime drama Rock the Kasbah, starring Shia LaBeouf, Zooey Deschanel, Bruce Willis, Kate Hudson, Bill Murray and Danny McBride. The new Friday the 13th, finally, will face off against an untitled comedy from Universal Pictures. Directed by David Bruckner, the movie will mark the 13th film overall in the Friday the 13th franchise.

I'm not to excited for the films, but these are some pretty great release dates. First I'm glad to see that Paranormal Activity is moving back to October where it belongs as all horror films do. As for Friday the 13th, I know that it is a recognizable franchise, but we honestly don't need another film, but I will say that May has been a good month for the franchise and hopefully May can do it again. For Rings I din't even know there was a second film in the franchise so I'm not interested in a third film.

Even though we’ve only seen a few visual hints of him so far, Marvel is so confident that audiences will flip for The Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron they’ve already got him booked for another feature, as confirmed by actor Paul Bettany to News Australia. “That’s the really great thing about the Marvel gig for me,” Bettany said. “I have never known if I have had a job six months out ever in my life. And now I know that they have plans and I can be even more judicious about the stuff that I do outside of that work. I can wait for the right thing and feel really attached to it.” Although no specific project is named, it seems likely that The Vision would have a role to play in Captain America: Civil War given how intrinsically his origin is tied to Tony Stark and his A.I. J.A.R.V.I.S. (also voiced by Bettany). Robert Downey Jr. is set to reprise his role as Stark/Iron Man in an antagonistic capacity for the sequel, which will shoot from April through August in Atlanta and Los Angeles. Those dates certainly line up with “six months out.”

Despite literally being on the MCU bandwagon from the beginning – voicing J.A.R.V.I.S. since 2008’s Iron Man – Bettany admitted to doing the movies for some easy voiceover cash, only immersing himself in the Marvel movies after taking on the critical role of The Vision. “I did a lot of research — and my research was watching all of the films,” says Bettany. “I realized they are so interlinked and I wanted to understand the universe I was in. So I did and it was a really amazing, fun experience. Everybody made me feel really at home and I have no bad stories — they are really funny people and really creative. I have never seen sets that big in my whole career. I have never seen set pieces like it — we were in a set that felt like a town.” Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, James Spader, Cobie Smulders, Thomas Kretschmann, Paul Bettany and Stellan Skarsgard. The Joss Whedon-directed film will debut in theaters on May 1, 2015.

These are some great comments. As I have said before Paul Bettany is a talented actor and I'm glad that Marvel is finally allowing him to showcase his talents. As for the character of Vision I'm glad we're going to see him in future films, but it kind of takes away from the fact that if he gets in any real danger during Age of Ultron then we know he'll survive. anyway I'm just happy for Bettany and I cannot wait to see what Vision looks like.

Sony Pictures Entertainment announced today that it has slated its upcoming motion picture Concussion, starring Will Smith, for release on Christmas Day, 2015. The film is based on the David vs. Goliath journey of Dr. Bennet Omalu, the forensic neuropathologist who made the first discovery of football-related brain trauma in a pro player and fought to bring awareness to the public. In his search for the truth behind the devastating malady, Omalu’s quest humanizes the price paid by professional athletes in impact sports but also by people who challenge the status quo as it exposes the political, cultural and corporate interests that fuel the business of sports. Concussion also stars Alec Baldwin, Luke Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Arliss Howard, Paul Reiser, David Morse and Albert Brooks. Both written and directed by Peter Landesman, the film is based in part on the GQ article “Game Brain,” written by Jeanne Marie Laskas. The producers include Ridley Scott, Giannina Facio, David Wolthoff, Larry Shuman and Elizabeth Cantillon with David Crockett and Michael Schaefer executive producing. Hannah Minghella and Jonathan Kadin are overseeing the production for the studio. Landesman’s production team includes director of photography Salvatore Totino, production designer David Crank, Academy Award-winning editor William Goldenberg, and costume designer Dayna Pink. The Christmas Day release will see Concussion opening opposite Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant, the family adventures Monster Trucks and Alvin and the Chipmunks 4, and David O. Russell’s Joy Mangano biopic Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence.

This is a great release date. It is going to be an Oscar bait film and it could be a real competitor. as a person who has dealt with concussions in the past this is a film that I am looking forward to. It is an important film that a lot of people need to see when it comes out.

Two-time Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey (American Beauty, The Usual Suspects) has, according to a story today at TheWrap, signed on to headline Men in Black trilogy director Barry Sonnenfeld’s new comedy, Nine Lives. The film, scripted by Daniel Antoniazzi and Ben Shiffrin, follows a workaholic executive who, following some kind of accident, finds himself trapped in the body of his family’s pet cat. Spacey, who also recently took home a Golden Globe for his work on the hit Netflix series “House of Cards,” is no stranger to playing non-human characters. He played the robotic GERTY in Duncan Jones’ sci-fi thriller Moon and also lent his voice to Pixar’s early animated feature A Bug’s Life, playing the villanous Hopper. He also has a few recent comedies on his resume, including both Horrible Bosses films and David Dobkin’s 2007 Christmas comedy Fred Claus. Coming up, he’ll play President Richard Nixon opposite Michael Shannon’s Elvis Presley in director Liza Johnson’s Elvis & Nixon and provide the voice of the title character in 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks Animation’s Boss Baby. EuropaCorp is both financing and producing Nine Lives with its US film president Liza Ellzey overseeing the project.

This is pretty great casting. Sapcey (as the article says) is a two-time Academy Award winning actor and putting him in any film is a great idea. As for the film itself it reminds me a lot of The Shaggy Dog and it has potential, but it may very well just flat out suck.
