4-24-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from screenrant.com)

Every one of the Mission: Impossible movies released to date has been directed by a different filmmaker. This has allowed the Tom Cruise-headlined franchise to continually evolve its style, moving from the technical precision of Brian De Palma to the slow-motion artistry of John Woo; then came J.J. Abrams’ more emotional take, followed by the live-action Saturday morning cartoon fun of the fourth installment, Brad Bird’s Ghost Protocol. Now it’s Oscar-winning screenwriter/director Christopher McQuarrie’s (Jack Reacher) turn to put his spin on the world of IMF agent Ethan Hunt.

The tentatively-titled Mission: Impossible 5 is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Christmas 2015, which means that production ought to be getting going in the months ahead (it may be partly underway already); besides Cruise and his Mission: Impossible III and Ghost Protocol costar Simon Pegg, however, no other cast members have been confirmed at this time. Now there is a rumor making the rounds, claiming that two-time Oscar-nominee Jessica Chastain is being sought to star opposite Cruise as one of the action film’s leads.

I really like hearing this news. As I said before concerning Chastain playing Marilyn Monroe, she is one of the top 5 actresses in the business today. I think that this film would be a perfect fit for her career and it'll show how diverse she is.

The live-action film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit – a novel that precedes events in the author’s touchstone fantasy genre work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy – was once going to be a two-movie project, with Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim) calling the shots. One thing led to another, and instead the adaptation has become the second of two Peter Jackson Middle-earth cinematic trilogies, far more massive in both its scale and breadth than anyone would have originally anticipated – unnecessarily so, many will also tell you.

Anyway, the range in fans’ opinions concerning that matter aside, Jackson’s embellished telling of the story is nearly done, with the third and final Hobbit movie arriving this December. In recent weeks, there have been rumors that the film might be getting a different name than its previously-ordained title, which is The Hobbit: There and Back Again; while the fantasy epic will not be subtitled Into the Fire, as the rumor mill suggested, it’s now officially undergone a title change to The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

Jackson stated "Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we've gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the “Desolation of Smaug”.

I'm actually a little disappointed in this news. Now let me state that I actually really do like the new  title of the film and it's fits since we'll be seeing The Battle of Five Armies in the next film. But I'm disappointed simply because There and Back Again is a key title in the book and it's very sentimental to hardcore fans. Burt overall I really like this new title.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron is currently in production, and therefore, the sequel to Marvel’s billion-dollar superhero team-up is making headlines every day. While set photos and videos provide clues to what’s coming in Avengers 2, the cast and crew have been more savvy this time around, managing the flow of information or outright teasing fans through social media.

They've also been careful with the selection and timing of their words – and today, director Joss Whedon is feeding fans a little more about the villains (plural) that The Avengers team will face in the sequel, plus a bit more about what version of the killer robot Ultron we will see on the screen.

In speaking with Empire, Whedon had the following to say about how they are shaping James Spader’s Ultron for the movie: “I’m having a blast with Ultron. He’s not a creature of logic – he’s a robot who’s genuinely disturbed. We’re finding out what makes him menacing and at the same time endearing and funny and strange and unexpected, and everything a robot never is.”

I really like hearing this. If you know anything about Joss Whedon characters, then you'll by the description he gives about Ultron perfectly describes a Joss Whedon villain. Look I'm super excited for this film and Ultron (and James Spader doing the mo-cap and voice doesn't hurt)is going to be one hell of a villain and I can't wait to see him on the big screen.

Just when it seemed like Zack Snyder’s upcoming Batman vs. Superman couldn’t surprise comic book fans any more than it already has, yet another bombshell has dropped. Reports are now claiming that stage actor Ray Fisher has been signed to appear as DC superhero Cyborg in the upcoming film, already introducing big screen adaptations of Batman, Wonder Woman, and potentially several more unannounced comic book characters.

I honestly don't know what to say about this movie anymore. I mean for god's sake why do we need Cyborg in the film? I mean the film is called Batman vs. Superman and it should only be those two. This film is starting to really annoy a lot of people and it is setting itself up for a huge failure.

A Monster Calls is being directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, who previously made the acclaimed cinematic ghost story The Orphanage – a film that is perhaps better at being emotionally unsettling than delivering jolts – in addition to the drama The Impossible, which offers an intimate look at the human side of the 2004 Indiana Ocean tsunami. Bayona’s latest project more closely resembles the former than latter movie, as its narrative blends together disturbing fantastical material with extremely sad realistic dramatic content.

The latest report from Deadline reveals that Liam Neeson is being courted for the role of the eponymous Monster; the actor is currently filming Taken 3, though his schedule may be open by the time A Monster Calls starts principal photography for a Fall 2016 release date. In addition, the film’s cast now includes Felicity Jones; a lead in such projects as the 2009 The Diary of Anne Frank mini-series, as well as the indie romantic drama Like Crazy, Jones’ star will continue to rise this year, when she appears in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (in a role that’s rumored to be Black Cat) followed by her turn in the Stephen Hawking biopic Theory of Everything in late 2014.

Patrick Ness, who also penned the A Monster Calls movie script, wrote the original Carnegie and Greenaway Medal-winning novel, based on an idea conceived by human rights campaigner and author Siobhan Dowd (before she lost the battle to breast cancer). The story takes place in modern England, where 13-year old Conor is dealing with the impending death of his mother (who, like Dowd, has terminal cancer). Things begin to change for the lonely child, when he is visited late at night by a mysterious creature, who tells Conor a series of stories – in exchange, the young boy must tell the “monster” about his recurring nightmare.

This film seems really interesting. I mean I really like the premise and I also love the casting of Neeson as a "monster" and I think he fits the role very well. I also like the casting of Felicity Jones, she hasn't been in a lot of films but I feel that if she can knock out her part in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (playing Felicia Hardy aka Black Cat) then I fell that she can do really goo int his film as well.
