4-14-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the first blog of the newly announced Phase 2 of The Local Movieblog. Today on this glorious day I've decided to bring you some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

The upcoming film God's Pocket released it's first full trailer today (which you can check out below). The film stars the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman and is based off the novel of the same name and it tells the story of Mickey Scarpato's crazy stepson, Leon, who is killed in a construction "accident," and Mickey quickly tries to bury the bad news with the body. But when a local columnist comes sniffing around for the truth, things go from bad to worse. Mickey finds himself stuck in a life-and-death struggle compounded by a body he can't bury, a wife he can't please, and a debt he can't pay. God's Pocket is set to be released in limited theaters on May 9th, 2014.

This film look's to be absolutely amazing and it honestly feels like and Oscar bait film. The only problem is the release date which makes it very less likely to even be remembered by the Academy come next January. Anyways like I said before the film looks great and I could definitely see Phillip Seymour Hoffman get an Oscar nomination just based off this trailer alone.

Recently on Jimmy Kimmel Live, actor Paul Bettany talked about his upcoming role in The Avengers: Age of Ultron (which you can check out below). He stated "Oh I can do all sorts of things, but I'm not allowed to really talk about them and what we're going to do because there might be a Marvel agent in the room who will actually wrestle me to the ground and fire me...It's very exciting for me, but everything is a double edged sword, right? Because I was playing J.A.R.V.I.S. for years and my job was i would turn up at a recording studio for 45 minutes, do all my stuff, and then they would give ma huge bag of cash and then I'd go home. Now it turns out they've found me out and they want me to actually do something!" The Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to be released on May 1st, 2015.

This quote doesn't really give away much and that's not surprising since he's signed a non-disclosure agreement (an agreement where you can't give anything away about the film that the studio hasn't released yet or you could be fired). But the interview is interesting in the sense that he opens up about finally having an important role inside the MCU and all I can say is that I'm excited for the film and to see Bettany in this role.

Fast forward to the 1:17 mark for the conversation

Although David Fincher was said earlier this year to be targeting Sony Pictures' untitled Steve Jobs biopic, The Hollywood Reporter now brings word that the Gone Girl helmer has exited the project due to contract disputes. Fincher was already said to move forward with the film only under the condition that Christian Bale agree to play Jobs. Adapted by The Social Network's Aaron Sorkin and to be produced by that film's Scott Rudin, the biopic is to be based on Walter Isaacson's best-selling biography.

I'm really disappointed by this news. David Fincher is one of the top 10 directors working in Hollywood right now IMO and to hear that he's not collaborating with Aaron Sorkin again (the both worked on The Social Network). We've already seen what the two can do with one billionaire tycoon and it would've been great to see what they could do with another one. Well I guess in the immortal words of the Tootsie Pop commercials "The world may never know".

Speaking of David Fincher, his new film Gone Girl just released it's first trailer as well as it's first poster (both of which you can check out below). Gone Girl is based off of the novel of the same name and it's basic premise revolves around Nick Dunne (played by Ben Affleck)  and whether or not he killed his wife Amy Dunne (played by Rosamund Pike). Gone Girl is set to be released on October 3rd, 2014.

First off this is one of my most anticipated films of the year simply because it's stars Ben Affleck and like I said before it's directed by David Fincher who is one of the best in business today. With that being said I really like the poster. It's simple and it doesn't give away too much of the movie. As for the trailer I also love it, mainly due to there being little dialogue and the music playing over the trailer and the films just looks amazing.

Also in trailer news, the new international trailer for the remake of Annie was released today and you can check it out below.

This trailer is nothing new and it's pretty much the same as the trailer that was released for North American audiences just a few weeks ago. But in speaking for the trialer it almost looks like a shot for shot remake of the original film and that makes me a little skeptical but like every movie I'm going to give it a chance.

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen, today was a slow day for movie news but it still had some good highlights. Which of these stories peaked your interest or was there another story that interested you? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
