My Review of Battle of the Sexes

So I recently watched Battle of the Sexes and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

The upper half of the poster shows a sepia toned image, of a man and a woman speaking at before a bank of microphones. Below a tennis ball.

The 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King (played by Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (played by Steve Carell) became the most watched televised sports event of all time. Trapped in the media glare, King and Riggs were on opposites sides of a binary argument, but off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. With her husband urging her to fight for equal pay, the private King was also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, while Riggs gambled his legacy and reputation in a bid to relive the glories of his past.

This is a truly remarkable film. Sports movies are sometimes the best films simply because not only do they show a famous team or event that happened, but they show the behind the scenes drama or things that happened that led up to one event and boy does this film show the drama. We get to see a lot of in-depth detail about what both Bobby Riggs and Bille Jean King dealt with outside of tennis and the major event they put on almost takes a back seat which is what you want to see from certain sports movies. Both Steve Carell and Emma Stone are brilliant and they both continue their string of just really great films and it would not be a shock at all to see both of them nominated for Best Actor and Actress respectively. A lot of the themes that are tackled in this film do reflect some things going on in our world today which makes the film feel more powerful in several different moments throughout. There are times in the film where certain things get dragged out for too long and while everything brought up in the film is very important and relevant, some issues could've been glossed over and maybe some more time should've been given to other key moments. Also in those big powerful moments some of them don't feel as powerful because there are so many of them in the film that as it goes on, you feel drained of all emotion and energy which could make you restless by the films end. Overall this is a film that needed to be made and it's a film everyone should see and just use it as a reminder of how far we as a society have come since 1973, but that we also have a long way to go. I give Battle of the Sexes an 8.5 out of 10.
