In this interplanetary adventure, shortly after arriving to help colonize Mars, an astronaut dies while giving birth to the first human born on the red planet - never revealing who the father is. Thus begins the extraordinary life of Gardner Elliot (played by Asa Butterfield)- an inquisitive, highly intelligent boy who reaches the age of 16 having only met 14 people in his very unconventional upbringing. While searching for clues about his father, and the home planet he's never known, Gardner begins an online friendship with a street smart girl named Tulsa (played by Britt Robertson). When he finally gets a chance to go to Earth, Gardner is eager to experience all of the wonders he could only read about on Mars. But after his explorations begin, scientists discover that Gardner's organs can't withstand Earth's atmosphere. Gardner joins with Tulsa on a race against time to unravel the mysteries of how he came to be, and where he belongs in the universe.

This film is one of the most boring films ever to grace the big screen. It has a really interesting plot, but the execution is terrible and it doesn't know what type of film it wants to be or how it wants its characters to develop. Every character plays the same not in this film and you get nothing new out of them emotionally. The predictability factor is through the roof in this film and the sort of twist ending is pretty easy to find early on in the film and when the twist is revealed, it does nothing for the film because you don't care about the characters. Even the twist itself is dopey and unoriginal and it just makes the entire film pointless. Honestly this is a film that didn't need to be made because all it was doing was facing an uphill battle form the start trying to pawn off something as new original when in fact it turns out to be the same junk we've constantly been getting where we see talented actors and actresses try their best with little to nothing to work with. One bright spot in the film is the performances and while they do all go at the same beat, there are some special moments that show that this film could've been something had the story been remotely decent. Overall this film is a lazy attempt at sci-fi/romance and just treads the same water as previous films like this offering nothing new or inspirational despite having a brilliant cast with some bright spots in the performances. I give The Space Between us a 2 out of 10.
