Week in Movie News Review 10-17-16 to 10-23-16

Hello ladies and gentlemen. I'm here to give you a review of this week in movie news bringing the biggest stories of the week with some of my thoughts and opinions. So without further ado...

(NOTE: all of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for the upcoming third Wolverine film, simply titled Logan. The Wolverine director James Mangold is back behind the camera for Hugh Jackman’s final turn as the character. Check out the Logan trailer below! Starring Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart, Logan is coming to theaters on March 3, 2017. The new film will mark the ninth time that Hugh Jackman has played the character on the big screen. Mangold is directing from a script by David James Kelly. Mister Sinister and his “Essex Corp” were previously said to be the villain(s) of the film, with rumors pointing toward Richard E. Grant playing the villain, though it remains unconfirmed. We know that the primary villains for the film will include both The Reavers, lead by Boyd Holbrook’s Donald Pierce, as well as Wolverine’s favorite group, Weapon X. It stands to reason that Sinister’s role in the film will be tied to the creation of X-23, the young female clone of Wolverine also along for the film’s road trip. The cast for Logan also includes Stephen Merchant, Eriq La Salle, Elise Neal and Elizabeth Rodriguez.

This trailer is just absolutely perfect in every way possible. It's something that was completely unexpected and it threw everyone for a loop. It doesn't look like your typical superhero film and that's what makes it so unique and interesting. It's great to see and older look at both Wolverine and Professor X. Having Johnny Cash's version of  Hurt play over the trailer is just so haunting and it makes this film feel like and Oscar contender. We didn't get much of a look at the R-rated side of Wolverine in this trailer, but the International version is really brutal. This film is easily one of my top 20 anticipated films of the year and now it's in my top 5. With this being Hugh Jackman's last go as Wolverine, let's hope he can go out with a bang.

Lucasfilm announced today that Donald Glover, an acclaimed actor, award-winning writer, and Grammy-nominated artist, will be playing the part of Lando Calrissian in the still-untitled Han Solo Star Wars film, helmed by directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Glover will join Alden Ehrenreich — previously cast as Han Solo — in bringing two iconic Star Wars characters back to the big screen, but at a time in their lives previously unexplored. This new film depicts Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld — years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return of the Jedi. “We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” said Lord and Miller. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.” Glover is best known for creating and starring in the critically acclaimed FX series Atlanta (which had the highest premiere numbers for any basic cable comedy show since 2013), as well as for starring in four seasons of the show Community, and for his Grammy-nominated album “Because the Internet,” performed under the name Childish Gambino. In addition, Glover appeared in the Academy Award-nominated The Martian, and will be seen in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming. The untitled Han Solo movie is set for release in 2018.

This might be one of the best casting choices I have ever seen. Donald Glover is a phenomenal artist both in acting and singing and he truly is a one of a kind talent. He looks like a younger Billy Dee Williams and I think he will have great chemistry with Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo. Lando is such an important part to Han Solo's life story so it's no shock that he'll be in the film. For the longest time I was campaigning for Michael B. Jordan, but getting Donald Glover is just as good. I'm anxious to see him interact with Han and even see the game between them that won Han the Millennium Falcon. Out of both spin-offs that have been announced, this is the one I'm most looking forward to and I can't wait until 2018.

If Deadpool 2 is hoping to recapture the lightning-in-a-bottle magic of the first film, it’s going to have to happen with a different filmmaker as Deadline is reporting that 20th Century Fox‘s sequel has lost director Tim Miller. The co-founder of animation/effects house Blur Studios made his feature directorial debut with Deadpool, which became one of the year’s biggest hits (over $782 million globally on a $58 million budget), revived Ryan Reynolds’ flagging career and made R-rated action movies chic again. According to the trade, the split was over creative differences between Miller and Reynolds, the latter a champion of bringing the Merc With a Mouth to life for the last decade and who originated the onscreen version (in bastardized form) for 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Reynolds is also an active producer on Deadpool 2 alongside X-Men franchise caretakers Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner. Miller’s departure appears to be amicable as he has already shifted gears to Fox’s sci-fi thriller Influx, which Mark Bomback is adapting from the novel by David Suarez with an eye towards a trilogy. Filming on Deadpool 2 was planned for early 2017, although that may change as Fox scrambles for a replacement director who can match the anarchic tone and effects wizardry of the first one. Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who penned the first film, are returning to write the sequel.

I really hate to hear this news. Tim Miller is a great director and he did a wonderful job with Deadpool and his sequel could've been great. But when Ryan Reynolds has some control and you don't agree with him, the studio is going to side with him which is a shame, but it makes sense because you know no one else can play Deadpool other than Ryan Reynolds. There was a photo shared by Ryan Reynolds that included Edgar Wright and I think he would be an excellent choice for Deadpool 2 and his style of comedic directing fits well with the character.

The Mary Poppins Returns cast expands today with the addition of Academy Award winner Colin Firth. Variety has the news, reporting that the Kingsman star will play the part of William Weatherall Wilkins, who is president of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank in the film. The bank itself was featured in the original Mary Poppins (and even got its own song), but the name William Weatherall Wilkins actually comes from the third P.L. Travers novel, Mary Poppins Opens the Door. Wilkins is not a character in the book, however, and the name itself is all that appears, listed as the previous owner of a book. A Walt Disney Pictures production, the Mary Poppins Returns cast features Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer. Reuniting the director and producing team behind Disney’s hit film musical Into the Woods, Mary Poppins Returns will be directed by Oscar nominee, Emmy and DGA Award winner Rob Marshall and produced by Marshall, Emmy winner and Golden Globe nominee John DeLuca and Oscar, Emmy and Tony Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Marc Platt. The screenplay will be written by Oscar nominee David Magee based on The Mary Poppins Stories by P.L. Travers, with Oscar nominee and Tony Award winner Marc Shaiman composing an all-new score and Shaiman and Emmy nominee and Tony Award winner Scott Wittman writing original songs. Drawing from the wealth of material in P.L. Travers’ seven additional novels, the sequel’s story will take place in Depression-era London (when the books were originally written) and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Look for Mary Poppins Returns to hit the big screen December 25, 2018.

I absolutely love this casting. Anytime you have a film with the majority of the cast being British, then you can't have a film without Colin Firth. Now his role will probably very small, but it's still nice to have him on board for the film. I honestly have no clue what to expect from this film which is a great thing because it allows me to keep my interest into what the mystery will be in the film and how they are going to tell the story. If it can pull off some of the things Saving Mr. Banks wasn't able to do, then look for this film to be a heavy Oscar contender in 2019.

20th Century Fox has debuted a new Assassin’s Creed trailer, which you can watch using the player below! You’ll also find the new poster in the gallery underneath. Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day. Assassin’s Creed stars Academy Award nominee Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past, 12 Years a Slave) and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises, La Vie en Rose). The film is directed by Justin Kurzel (Snowtown, Macbeth); produced by New Regency, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, DMC Films and Kennedy/Marshall; co-financed by RatPac Entertainment and Alpha Pictures; and distributed by 20th Century Fox . Assassin’s Creed opens in theaters worldwide on December 21st, 2016. Assassin’s Creed co-stars Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson and Michael K. Williams. The film opens in theaters worldwide on December 21, 2016.

This is a really fun trailer. As I've mentioned several times, I'm a fan of the video game franchise and getting a chance to see it all come to life on the big screen is really a dream come true. I love how the story is being told with a new and original character that helps us as fans not predict everything had they gone with a character from the games. Visually this film looks absolutely gorgeous in every way possible and the action looks to be really intense. My only problem with both trailers so far is the song that plays over it because it just feels so out of place. Hopefully this film can help the video game movie genre out by being successful both critically and financially.

“So much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.” According to Variety, Warner Bros. Pictures has purchased the rights to the “Willy Wonka” IP from the Roald Dahl Estate, and plans to go ahead with an original Willy Wonka prequel story. Rather than being based on Dahl’s 1964 children’s book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” or its 1972 sequel “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator,” the movie will tell of an early adventure of eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka. The Willy Wonka prequel will not be explicitly an origin story, and other characters from the series, like Charlie Bucket, may appear in future franchise installments if this one is a success. Producer David Heyman of the Harry Potter franchise is set to produce the new film from a screenplay to be penned by “Man Seeking Woman” series creator Simon Rich, who also contributed material to Inside Out and The Secret Life of Pets. Courtenay Valenti (Mad Max: Fury Road) is overseeing the project for the studio. “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” has been twice adapted for the big screen, including a hit 2005 version — also released by Warners — starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton, and most famously as 1971’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory starring Gene Wilder in his most iconic role. No direct feature adaptation has been made of “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator” (though elements of it were used in both films), and Dahl was developing a third Wonka book titled “Charlie in the White House” before he passed away in 1990.

I'm not really sure how I should feel about this. On one hand, making another Willy Wonka film seems a bit dumb considering we just had one 11 years ago. Also I think this news coming out just three weeks after the death of Gene Wilder seems a little tasteless and maybe the news should've broke later on down the road. I like the idea of a prequel because it'll allow us to get more of an idea on who this guy really is. we got a mini look at it in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but getting a whole film based aorund that backstory seems really interesting. All I can say is that they better get someone good to play Will Wonka becasue those are big shoes to fill.

AI Film announced today that it will fully finance Craig Gillespie’s upcoming, I, Tonya, with Sierra/Affinity to commence international sales at this year’s AFM. Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad, The Wolf of Wall Street) is in negotiations to star as American figure skater Tonya Harding as well as produce the edgy comedy, with Bryan Unkeless (The Hunger Games, Bright) for Clubhouse Pictures, Tom Ackerley for LuckyChap Entertainment and Steven Rogers already attached to produce. Len Blavatnik and Aviv Giladi of AI Film are executive producing. UTA Independent Film Group and CAA are representing US domestic rights. I, Tonya peels back the layers of Tonya Harding’s sensationalized involvement in the 1994 attack on Nancy Kerrigan, exposing the absurd, tragic, and hilarious story-behind-the-story of the most infamous tabloid scandal in the history of figure skating and the Olympic Games. Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl, United States of Tara) directs a script penned by Steven Rogers (P.S. I Love You, Stepmom). Aviv Giladi, Chairman of AI Film, said of the announcement: “AI Film is thrilled to be collaborating with such a terrific creative team on this hugely entertaining project that is sure to captivate audiences worldwide.” Nick Meyer, CEO of Sierra/Affinity, added, “We are proud to partner with the talented teams at AI Film, Clubhouse Pictures, and LuckyChap Entertainment to present Craig and Steven’s unique and darkly comedic take on the iconic events that catapulted figure skating into the hot seat of global controversy. Margot is an incredible acting talent that will combine her powerful on-screen presence with a comedic touch that will give this project wide appeal.”

This is another great casting choice. When first thinking about a film like this it might take you a while to figure out who will be Tonya Harding and when you finally figure it our you get Margot Robbie. She is just the prefect choice for the role and it'll be interesting to see who will be cast as Nancy Kerrigan. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I think Natalie Portman would be a great selection, but would she be willing to be a dancer once again after her Oscar winning performance in Black Swan. Time will tell, but this casting gets me interested in the film.
