My Review of Florence Foster Jenkins

So I recently watched Florence Foster Jenkins and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Florence Foster Jenkins (film).jpg

In the 1940s, New York socialite Florence Foster Jenkins (played by Meryl Streep) dreams of becoming a great opera singer. Unfortunately, her ambition far exceeds her talent. The voice Florence hears in her head is beautiful, but to everyone else it is quite lousy. Her husband St. Clair (played by Hugh Grant) goes to extreme lengths to make sure his wife never finds out how awful she truly is. When Florence announces her plans for a concert at Carnegie Hall, St. Clair soon realizes that he's facing his greatest challenge yet.

This was somewhat of a boring film. The premise while great doesn't really lend itself to the big screen eventhough it's a story that not a lot of people know about. It feels as if this film would've been better as a tv film so that they could take more time to develop the story to make more enthralling. The cast is absolutely wonderful and Meryl Streep is just absolutely flawless in the lead role and she really stakes her claim as one contending for an Oscar. The supporting cast is also solid in many different ways and it's led by Hugh Grant who actually isn't annoying in this film and he fits in well. The main problem with the film is that it doesn't know what it wants to be and it often proceeds to be way too preachy. Often it will constantly make fun of this woman, but then the character get mad when she's made fun of and it happens quite often in this film and it just seems like the filmmakers didn't know what to do. It tires to be a comedy by delivering some pretty decent jokes, but it a blink of an eye it immediately turns into a drama piece and it just leaves you confused on what type of film you are actually watching. Overall this is a film that doesn't know what it wants to be, but it does have boastful performances and some magnificent set and costume designs. I give Florence Foster Jenkins a 7 out of 10.
