My Review of In the Heart of the Sea

So I recently watched In the Heart of the Sea and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

In 1820, Owen Chase (played by Chris Hemsworth) Captain of the New England vessel Essex faces a harrowing battle for survival when a whale of mammoth size and strength attacks with force, crippling his ship and leaving his crew adrift in the ocean. Pushed to their limits and facing storms, starvation, panic and despair, the survivors must resort to the unthinkable to stay alive. Their incredible tale ultimately inspires author Herman Melville to write "Moby-Dick."

This was a really disappointing film. From the moment this film was announced and with the director and cast that was assembled, this movie had a lot of potential. Then when the studio decided to move the film from a March release December release, you had to think the studio made the move to put in the Oscar and hope for some possible awards recognition. Pretty much to sum everything up, the film failed to live up what hype it had. Ron Howard has been a hit and miss director his entire career and we should've expected that this film wasn't going to be as good as some of his other great films, but with this theory his next film should be pretty great, but this was a total misstep for him. The cast in the film was perfect and all of the performances were pretty fantastic especially from Chris Hemsworth who continues to be a force both in and outside of the MCU also Cillian Murphy who always brings his best to every film he is in. The story itself is a fascinating one simply because the story itself was the basis for the book Moby Dick, and while that's great the story is pretty boring and there some moments where the film just drags on and on for way too long with so much exposition that is just unnecessary. The visual effects are pretty fantastic, but there is a little too much CGI and you can easily point out the scenes in which a green screen was used. Overall this was a film that could've been a massive Oscar contender, but everything good about the film just didn't click together for a cohesive film. I give In the Heart of the Sea a 5 out of 10.
