Weekend Movie News 10-9-15 to 10-11-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Universal Pictures and Working Title Films have released the official trailer for Joel and Ethan Coen’s latest feature film, Hail, Caesar!, their first since 2013’s Inside Llewyn Davis. Check out the Hail, Caesar! trailer below. Four-time Oscar-winning filmmakers the Coen brothers (The Big Lebowski, Fargo) write and direct Hail, Caesar!, an all-star comedy set during the latter years of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Starring Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, Sicario), George Clooney (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Burn After Reading), Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Tilda Swinton (Only Lovers Left Alive, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Channing Tatum (Magic Mike, 21 Jump Street), Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Jonah Hill (Moneyball, The Wolf of Wall Street), Hail, Caesar! follows a single day in the life of a studio fixer who is presented with plenty of problems to fix. Brolin plays the fixer, based on real-life MGM executive Eddie Mannix. Hail, Caesar! is produced by the Coen brothers under their Mike Zoss Productions banner, with Working Title Films and Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan. Universal will release the film on February 5, 2016.

This was a great trailer. The film looks just absolutely beautiful and that's a big theme throughout all of the Coen brothers filmography. I really like how it's a period piece and it gives somewhat of a look at that time in history without it being factual. The cast looks amazing and I'm really excited to see how they all feed of off each other and this is an early Oscar contender for 2017 just based off of this trailer.

Lionsgate UK has revealed the first highly-anticipated Pride and Prejudice and Zombies international trailer, which you can view below. Written and directed by Burr Steers (Igby Goes Down), Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is based on the book by Seth Grahame-Smith and stars Lily James (Cinderella), Sam Riley (Control), Jack Huston (American Hustle), Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows), Douglas Booth (Jupiter Ascending), Matt Smith (“Doctor Who”), Charles Dance (“Game of Thrones”) and Lena Headey (300). A zombie outbreak has fallen upon the land in Jane Austen’s classic tale of the tangled relationships between lovers from different social classes in 19th century England. Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) is a master of martial arts and weaponry and the handsome Mr. Darcy (Sam Reilly) is a fierce zombie killer, yet the epitome of upper class prejudice. As the zombie outbreak intensifies, they must swallow their pride and join forces on the blood-soaked battlefield. Steers told EW in July that they didn’t go for laughs in adapting the material. “The idea was that it was Pride and Prejudice set in this alternate world and then for everyone to play it straight,” he says. “The movie’s big wink is that there is no big wink. It’s definitely not camp.” Lily James says that the Bennet girls will see some real action in the film. “Rather than knitting and crocheting, they’re polishing muskets,” she says, adding that Elizabeth is “the most badass zombie slayer there is.”  Screen Gems will open Pride and Prejudice and Zombies in U.S. theaters on February 19, 2016

This trailer was absolutely terrible. The film looks cheesy and so ridiculous and I'm questioning why this is being made into a film. I personally think these hybrid books (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) getting made is a stupid idea because they just sound so stupid and don't make any sense. Honestly I'm not looking forward to this film whatsoever, but I do like the fact that it is going to have a female presence which is something that is lacking in today's films.

The words of Chumbawamba could easily apply to the career of Sylvester Stallone: “I get knocked down, but I get up again, you’re never going to keep me down.” That’s our roundabout way of letting you know that Variety is reporting that Nu Image and Millennium have just made pre-sales deals with SP International Pictures on behalf of SSXH Beijing and Max Screen Film Distribution to bring us The Expendables 4. This news comes despite The Expendables 3 only grossing $39 million domestically, which would have made it an out-and-out flop if not for the robust $167 million it took in overseas. Expendables 4 is expected to shoot in 2016 (partly in China) for a 2017 release, although the director and cast have yet been announced, though the trade assures that the all-star action formula will be followed to the letter with a budget north of $100 million. The Expendables franchise features Stallone as mercenary team leader Barney Ross, with kick-ass heavyweights like Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture and Arnold Schwarzenegger making up the core group. Stallone, who spoke to CraveOnline for the Blu-ray release of The Expendables 3, stated that he blamed the box office disappointment of the threequel on its attempt to reach a wider audience with a PG-13 rating, a mistake he said “won’t happen again.” He also teased that it was probable that a prominent member of the team would kick the bucket in a fourth film. “It’s is a big conflict for me,” said Stallone. “because in an R-rated film it is difficult to believe that none of the heroes die. I personally just believe that the characters become identifiable and their demise could put a dark cloud over an audience exiting the theatre after seeing the film. But that may change in ‘Expendables 4’…” Shortly before the failure of The Expendables 3, Millennium also trumpeted plans for an all-female spin-off film titled The ExpendaBelles with Killers and 21 director Robert Luketic brought aboard to helm. Although they were initially targeting big names like Cameron Diaz, Milla Jovovich, Sigourney Weaver and even Meryl Streep(!), there has been no recent movement on the project.

This news can't possibly be true. The last film was terrible both critically and financially and they've gotten worse each and every time. I can honestly think of a hundred other films I want made and deserved to be made more than this film. Look I love hoe these films bring out all of the older action stars who think they've still got it when they don't and I just wish these films would stop getting made.

Originally announced in 2012, Lionsgate’s adaptation of Jeanette Walls’ bestselling memoir The Glass Castle has long had Jennifer Lawrence attached to star, but that changes today as The Hollywood Reporter says Brie Larson (Trainwreck, The Gambler) is in talks to replace her as the lead after a crowded dance card of projects and a languishing development forced Lawrence to drop out. Should the deal go through, The Glass House will mark the first time Larson has reunited with director Destin Cretton after her breakout role in his 2013 indie hit Short Term 12. The 2006 source material is officially described as follows: Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn’t stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an “excitement addict.” Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever. Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town—and the family—Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents’ betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home. Marti Noxon (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Fright Night) initially adapted the film’s screenplay with Cretton, with Nicholl Fellowship-winning screenwriter Andrew Lanham performing additional rewrites. Larson will be seen in theaters next week in the Toronto International Film Festival hit Room, with supporting roles in Legendary’s blockbuster Kong: Skull Island and Todd Solondz’s Welcome to the Dollhouse sequel Weiner-Dog.

This is great replacement casting. If you are looking to replace an actress like Jennifer Lawrence with some high quality young talent then Brie Larson is the perfect choice. From everything I've seen and heard about her performance in Room, she could compete for an Oscar next year and if that's the case your replacing talent with talent. I also like the fact that she is teaming up with the director she worked with on Short Term 12 and if they can make another film like that then we could see even more scar buzz for Larson.

Video game adaptations don’t have the best track record in Hollywood, and for good reason, which is why when Ubisoft decided to begin adapting their properties, they wanted to maintain some control and develop the projects in house. The first of these films that will see the light of day is none other than the Assassin’s Creed movie, which is currently in production. Speaking with Premiere Magazine (via /Film), the CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, Jean-Julien Baronnet, spoke about the development process of the film and revealed their cinematic inspiration. “[Michael Fassbender] accepted very quickly. And it was the only actor which we thought was obvious. So we started with the actor, which is incongruous. Even more incongruous, he engaged us with nothing. There was no script, no studio or anything. We told him we were going to build the project together, we have a huge brand and we want to make a make a film with references to feature films like Batman Begins and Blade Runner. That is why we tend to. He was promised that he could work with the writers, we would associate it with all key creative choices.” “Our approach is to remain in control of the development, so to finance it 100%. We choose writers who are not necessarily stars but people who have understood the universe. And as long as the script is not level, it will not launch. It has also worked very closely with New Regency for Assassin’s Creed. We needed them for their expertise. There was a kind of triptych between the actor, the studio and us. It is the combination of the three who built this scenario. With arbitration returning us as we fund. The beauty of being a small structure is that no contingencies that lead us to release films in greenlighter quickly. It leaves time to time to arrive at what it takes. Four years of development for Assassin!”

Assassin’s Creed stars Academy Award nominee Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past, 12 Years a Slave) and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises, La Vie en Rose), Jeremy Irons (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Brendan Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow, Calvary) and Michael Kenneth Williams (“The Wire,” “Boardwalk Empire”). The film is directed by Justin Kurzel (Snowtown, Macbeth) and will open in theaters worldwide on December 21st, 2016. Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day. Principal photography on the Assassin’s Creed movie is currently taking place in Malta, London, and Spain.

I absolutely love these comments. You always see films take inspiration from other films all the time, but when you say that you are inspired by Batman Begins and Blade Runner, then you have my attention to the fullest extent. I also like how all three of the levels of filmmaking are getting along and working well together because it bode well for the chemistry on set to make for an amazing film. I've mentioned it before, but I'm a fan of the first few entries in the game franchise and I've been looking forward to this film for a long time and Christmas 2016 can't get here soon enough.
