10-13-15/10-14-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Since I didn't get to bring you news from yesterday I figured that I would combine today's and yesterday's news (3 stories from each day). So here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

Will Harrison Ford once again wear the iconic fedora for a Steven Spielberg-helmed Indiana Jones 5? Spielberg himself certainly makes it sound like that’s the plan, speaking with Yahoo! Movies on behalf of his latest film, Bridge of Spies. Set for release this Friday, October 16, Bridge of Spies stars Tom Hanks and marks the Academy Award-winning actor’s fourth teaming with Spielberg. “We’ve gotta figure this out because now,” Spielberg says. “Tom is tied with Harrison Ford: Harrison and I did four movies, Tom and I have done four movies. Now I’ll probably do an Indy 5 with Harrison. It’ll be five for Harrison, four for Tom… [Then] I’ve got to make another one with Tom, so that will be five for Tom, five for Harrison. And I think I’m going to leapfrog that way for the rest of my career. With Daniel Day-Lewis in everything else!” Although he ends with a joke, Spielberg sounds quite earnest about doing an Indiana Jones 5 with Ford. Of course, one of the bigger headlines from earlier this year was the announcement that Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm were eyeing Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt to potentially replace Harrison Ford as the headlining star of the Indiana Jones franchise with rumors then that Spielberg might come back to direct. It’s even entirely possible that an Indiana Jones 5 could feature both leading men, offering up a story told between two different time periods. Although the most recent big screen adventure, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, was not entirely a hit with critics, the fourth film in the series managed to gross more than $786 million worldwide when it was released in 2008. Shortly thereafter, George Lucas hinted that plans were underway for a fifth cinematic adventure, but he admitted that he had yet to decide on a MacGuffin (A term popularized by Alfred Hitchcock, referring to a narrative element that drives the story forward, such as the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark). Following the sale of Lucasfilm to Walt Disney Pictures and Lucas’ own subsequent retirement, however, hints regarding plans for the future of the franchise have been few and far between. Ford, however, has suggested that he’s quite eager to reprise the role himself, despite turning 73 this year.

These are really interesting comments. Look I'm a huge fan of Stephen Spielberg and he's done a lot of fantastic films including the Indiana Jones franchise which I love, but he did the 4th Indiana Jones film and that was absolutely terrible. I'm glad he wants to do the 5th Indiana Jones film with Harrison Ford, but I don't want him back. I just feel that the franchise would be better off with out Ford and Spielberg because when you stay with a franchise for too long you and the franchise become stale. I'm looking forward to another film in the franchise, I just hope Ford and Spielberg don't return.

Earlier this month, we reported that a small tiff was brewing over rising star Taron Egerton as Lionsgate had tapped the 25-year-old actor to star in their upcoming film Robin Hood: Origins, but his contractual commitment to a Kingsman sequel may prevent it. The Hollywood Reporter now brings word that Lionsgate has pushed production on “Robin Hood” to the end of the summer as the Kingsman sequel will begin shooting this April. Director Matthew Vaughn is currently penning the script for the Kingsman sequel, which he previously revealed will feature an American version of the British Kingsman agency and that he might return to direct the sequel despite having never done so with his previous films. Based upon the 2012 Icon Comics miniseries by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar, Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius. The film stars Academy Award winners Colin Firth and Michael Caine alongside Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong and newcomers Taron Egerton, Sofia Boutella and Sophie Cookson. Scripted by Vaughn and Jane Goldman, Kingsman: The Secret Service grossed over $412 million at the global box office.

This isn't really that surprising news to hear. Why would you want to spend money on a new project that may or may not work, when you can go with a project that has proven that it can be successful. I like how the studio is prioritizing their projects and the fun thing is we could see both of these films in 2017. These are two films I'm looking forward to and I cannot wait to see them especially Kingsman 2 because the first one was just so spectacular.

Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle) is making plans for the future today as Variety reports that the star has entered talks to headline a mystery indie project from Academy Award nominee Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Noah). The Hollywood Reporter, meanwhile, brings word that Lawrence has exited Richard Linklater’s The Rosie Project. Little is known about Aronofsky’s mystery film, although the trade notes that the current plan is for it to shoot next spring. No acting talent is fully aboard quite yet, but Aronofsky is said to be meeting with potential stars right now. As such, check back for casting updates as they

This will be a fantastic team-up. Darren Aronofsky is one of my favorite directors and Jennifer Lawrence is one of my favorite actresses and knowing that they'll be working on a project together gets me excited. I'm very curious to see what the project will be, but knowing Aronofsky it could honestly be anything as proven by his filmography. I think the film will be great no matter what and I can't wait to see what these two can do together.

Following Legendary and Warner Bros. Pictures’ 2014 success with the global reinvention of the Godzilla franchise, the companies are officially announcing today an epic shared cinematic universe. All-powerful monsters will become towering heroes for a new generation, revealing a mythology that brings together Godzilla and Legendary’s King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new. Monarch, the human organization that uncovered Godzilla in the 2014 film, will expand their mission across multiple releases, including a 2020 showdown film, Godzilla vs Kong. The Godzilla vs Kong announcement was made today by Legendary CEO, Thomas Tull, and Kevin Tsujihara, Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. 2017 will see the release of Kong: Skull Island with Godzilla 2 following in 2018. Then, Godzilla vs Kong, will hit theaters in 2020. While Legendary maintains its new home at Universal Pictures, the Godzilla films remain in partnership with Warner Bros., who will now also distribute Kong as a part of this franchise. Production on Kong: Skull Island begins October 19th. Warner Bros. and Legendary released Godzilla in May 2014 with an agreement to release Godzilla 2 on June 8, 2018. Both films feature the human Monarch organization. Following Legendary’s pact with NBC Universal, Legendary acquired rights to additional classic characters from Toho‘s Godzilla universe, including Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. This paved the way for developing a franchise centered around Monarch and anchored by Godzilla, King Kong, and other famous creatures. When Legendary announced films centered on Godzilla and Kong, fans all over the world speculated these two characters might one day meet in the same film. Classic Toho monsters including King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan, as announced at Comic-Con 2014, may also join the Legendary pantheon of giant monster mayhem going forward. “Audiences really responded to Godzilla,” says Tull. “Today, I’m excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I’ve always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we’re pleased to be announcing that and more.” “Working with our partners at Legendary, we enjoyed tremendous creative and commercial success with ‘Godzilla,'” said Tsujihara. “It’s great to be able to revisit these characters and help create a franchise with so many creative possibilities for filmmakers. Fans love these big, globally iconic films and it doesn’t get any bigger than this.”

This is great news to hear. If you were to ask me what film match-up would you want to see the most and I would first Batman vs. Superman and thankfully we are getting that in March 2016. My second choice would be Godzilla vs. King Kong and now we are finally getting that. These two are the most iconic monsters in film history and it will be a special treat to see them together on screen. The only part that frustrates me is that we have to wait 5 more years for the film, but I've waited this long, I think I can wait a little longer.

A new The Night Before poster has just been released thanks to leading man Seth Rogen. Rogen shared the new design via his Twitter account and you can check it below. Set for release this holiday season, The Night Before stars Rogen alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anthony Mackie, Lizzy Caplan, Jillian Bell, Michael Shannon and Mindy Kaling. From director Jonathan Levine, the director of 50/50 and Warm Bodies, comes the new holiday comedy. In it, Ethan (Gordon-Levitt), Isaac (Rogen) and Chris (Mackie) have been friends since childhood, and for a decade, their yearly Christmas Eve reunion has been an annual night of debauchery and hilarity. Now that they’re entering adulthood, the tradition is coming to an end, and to make it as memorable as possible, they set out to find the Nutcracka Ball – the Holy Grail of Christmas parties. Featuring a screenplay by Jonathan Levine and Evan Goldberg & Kyle Hunter & Ariel Shaffir, The Night Before is produced by Rogen, Goldberg and James Weaver and executive produced by Nathan Kahane, Joe Drake, Barbara A. Hall, Kyle Hunter, Ariel Shaffir and Ben Waisbren. If you haven’t already seen it, be sure to check out The Night Before‘s Red Band trailer. There’s also a green band version and, released just last week, a first clip and TV spot for the Christmas comedy. Look for The Night Before to hit the big screen November 20, opening opposite Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.

The Night Before

I really like this poster a lot. It's really hilarious to see these three actors posing like this for a Christmas movie. I also like the font used on the poster as it gives it a little bit more of a professional touch and it's somewhat of a throwback to older movies and how they made their posters. This film looks absolutely hilarious and I'm excited to see how all three of these will interact together. It probably won't be a box office smash since of it's opponent for the Thanksgiving, but I'm interested to see how it turns out.

Planned for Martin Scorsese to helm back in 2011, the big screen adaptation of Jo Nesbo‘s best-seller The Snowman found a new helmer last year in Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and a new lead last month in Academy Award nominee Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Shame). Now, Deadline is reporting another momentum-builder for the film as red-hot actress Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation) has entered talks to play the thriller’s female lead with an eye towards a January start date. The seventh entry in Nesbo’s “Harry Hole” series, The Snowman is officially described as follows: It is November in Oslo and the first snow of the year has fallen. Birte Becker comes home from work and praises the snowman her husband and son have made in the garden. But they haven’t made a snowman. As the family stand by the sitting room window looking out in amazement at the snowman, the son notices that it is facing the house. The black eyes are staring at the window. At them. Detective Inspector Harry Hole receives an anonymous letter signed “The Snowman.” Later he finds an alarming common thread in all the old disappearance cases. Married women go missing the day the first snow falls. That same night Sylvia Pedersen is fighting her way through the first snow in a forest outside Oslo. She knows she is running for her life, but she doesn’t know what from. Nor does she know what lies ahead. Fortunately. Alfredson himself wrote a draft of the screenplay alongside Soren Sveistrup, although Matthew Michael Carnahan (World War Z, State of Play) is credited with the shooting script. Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are attached to produce The Snowman along with Robyn Slovo and Piodor Gustafsson, with Scorsese executive producing. Ferguson will next be seen opposite Emily Blunt, Chris Evans and Jared Leto in DreamWorks’ hotly-anticipated The Girl on the Train adaptation, currently in pre-production. The trade also mentions that she is under early consideration for a plumb female role in Ridley Scott’s forthcoming Prometheus sequel Alien: Paradise Lost, a script for which was just delivered to 20th Century Fox in recent weeks.

I think this is terrific casting. Rebecca Ferguson is an actress who has become a star essentially overnight and right now she is being rumored for just about every film imaginary. I think that she would be a great fit for this film and her and Michael Fassbender will have tremendous chemistry with each other. The film itself is a fun and interesting premise and I'm very interested to see how it all turns out.
