My Top 10 Favorite Horror Movies of All-Time

Horror movies are made to scare the living daylights out of us, make us pee our pants and possibly haunt our dreams and so here recently I have watched a few of them. In today's films though horror movies really aren't scary anymore, they have more of a gory comedy feel to it. Well if we go back into the movie vault a little bit we can find an abundance of really scary movies. Today I'm going to bring you my top 10 Horror movies of All-time (plus when you see the list, put yourself back into a theater when these movies came out and think of how scary they were then). So without further ado here's the list.

               10. Saw
The line "How much blood would you shed to stay alive?" hovers over a young woman trapped in one of the film's most featured traps, the "reverse bear trap"

Now some of you are going to roll your eyes and say that the Saw movie franchise isn't scary it's just gory (don't gt me wrong they are), but the first is the scariest film of the franchise. It tells the story of Adam (played by Leigh Whannell) and Lawrence (played by Cary Elwes) as they are trapped in a bathroom and they must figure out why they are the bathroom and who is the mysterious Jigsaw (played by Tobin Bell). The is viewed as the best of the franchise and it made Lionsgate some pretty good money. The film was granted a $1 million budget and it made $103 million at the box office and it spawned 6 sequels .

            9. The Omen (1976)
File:Omen ver4.jpg

This film actually creeped  a lot of people out and made people wonder if they should adopt kids. The film tells the story of Robert and Katherine Thorn (played by Gregory Peck and Lee Remick) as they adopt a child after their newborn dies shortly after birth. At the suggestion of the hospitals priest (played by Martin Benson) the couple adopts a young boy that they name Damien (played by Harvey Spencer Stephens). At the beginning Damien seems like an ordinary child, but after a while a lot of strange things begin to happen and Robert (Peck) discovers that his child may be the Antichrist and he must figure out a way to stop him. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards including Best Original Score and Original Song, while winning one (Best Original Score). The movie also had two sequels (which came out in 1978 and 1981) and a remake which coincidentally came out on June 6th, 2006 or 6-6-06

You can actually find this movie on Netflix or on YouTube just copy and paste the link below into your browser

            8. The Thing (1982)
File:ThingPoster.jpg

This film comes to us from the man who created the Halloween franchise so you automatically know it is going to be pretty scary. The story is about a group of American researchers in Antarctica and they discover the remains of there Norwegian counterparts base that has been burnt to the ground. They discover the remains of a humanoid corpse and quickly the corpse mutates and things get worse from there. The film stars Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, and Keith David (as MacReady, Blair, and Childs). From this film a sequel was made in 2011 which focused on the Norwegian team. You can also find the movie on Netflix

            7. Nosferatu

Now some of you have probably never heard of this movie and that's not surprising since it came out in 1922. This film is a silent film but it is considered the movie that started the Horror film genre. Nosferatu is pretty much the German unauthorized version of Dracula except with some of the names and details changed. With it being unauthorized the rightful heirs to the story of Dracula sued the company that distributed it and was court ordered to destroy every copy. However one copy did survive and the film lives on as a cinematic piece of art.

If you would like to check the film out (which I encourage that you do) you can find the full movie in the link below

            6. It

Now this film absolutely haunts my dreams. Based on the book by Stephen King, it tells the story of 7 local Maine kids as they fight Pennywise the Clown (played by Tim Curry) who has went on a murdering spree on innocent children. After one confrontation with the clown, he comes back 30 years later to take on the children (now as grown-ups) to settle the score. The film did get some bad and good reviews, but Tim Curry's take as Pennywise received universal critical acclaim for a perfect representation of the character from the book.

You can watch the full movie in the link below. Also in the link there is a scene in the movie that was taken out due to copyright claims, so if you want to know about the scene please read the description in the video.

            5. The Exorcist
File:Exorcist ver2.jpg

The Exorcist was a controversial film in 1973, but is considered one of the scariest movies of all-time. The film is about a girl named Regan (played by Linda Blair) who becomes demonically possessed and two priests (played by Jason Miller and Max von Sydow) are brought in to perform an exorcism. The film received a lot of criticism because of Linda Blair only being 14 at the time and her use of foul language. It also received ten Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Sound, Adapted Screenplay, Director, Cinematography, Editing, and Art Direction while winning two (Best Sound and Adapted Screenplay). There were four sequels made (1977, 1990, 2000,and 2004) and one prequel in 2005.

             4. The Evil Dead (1981)
File:Evil dead ver1.jpg

The Evil Dead is probably one of the first movies to really show gore, demonic possession and horror in the same film. Its about 5 friends who are on a spring break trip to a cabin in rural Tennessee. Things start out like any trip but when the group ventures to the basement, they find out things are not what they really seem. One by one each member of the group becomes possessed except for Ash Williams (played by Bruce Campbell) and he must find a way to fight back against the demonic possession. The film is considered a cult classic, it also spawned two sequels and a 2013 remake.

You can watch the movie on Netflix or you can watch it in the link below but you must verify you are 18 by signing into your YouTube account or by quickly setting up an account.

           3. The Shining
File:The Shining poster.jpg

Another film adapted from a Stephen King novel, The Shining is a suspenseful horror story that can strike fear into a person's soul. The film is about a writer named Jack Torrance (played by Jack Nicholson) who has been asked to be winter caretaker of the Overlook Hotel and he believes that the peace, quite and solitude will help him work on his new book. He brings along his wife Wendy and son Danny (played by Shelley Duvall and Danny Lloyd respectively). Cabin fever starts to set in on Jack's mind and he starts to become crazy, also Danny has ESP where he can see horrific things even the past horror of the hotel. This film is mostly remembered for the creepy line of "redrum" which spelled backwards is murder.

            2. Psycho (1960)
File:Psycho (1960).jpg

Made by the late and great Alfred Hitchcock, Psycho took the horror genre to a whole new level. After a girl has been murdered in a Phoenix hotel an investigation begins into the mysterious murder and disappearance of the girl's body. The film received four Academy Award nominations including Best Director, Supporting Actress, Cinematography, and Art Direction. The film is widely considered the greatest horror movie of all-time.

            1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
File:TheTexasChainSawMassacre-poster.jpg

My scariest horror film of all-time literally scares me every single time and it is considered as the film that started the slasher-horror genre. When a trip goes bad wrong, five stranded friends must ban together to survive the night from the gruesome Leatherface who makes furniture out of people's skin. At first the film was banned in several countries for its graphic content. The film  spawned four sequels one of which was released in 2013 and a straight remake in 2003 with a sequel of its own.
