Since Thursday marked the halfway point of the year I thought it would be fitting to give you my top 10 favorite films of 2016 so far. So without further ado...
10. The Nice Guys
This was the perfect film for Shane Black to get back into directing. Buddy cop films are his specialty and this one fits right in with his other films outside of Iron Man 3. The film plays out like mix of a modern version of L.A. Confidential and Lethal Weapon and it just works so well. It's the first Shane Black film that doesn't take place at Christmas and it has one of the best acting pairings to ever be seen on film.
9. Captain America: Civil War
This film was one of the most anticipated films of the year and quite possibly the MCU. This film dones't follow the comic storyline which is what Batman v. Superman failed to do and it actually makes this a better film. It's bascially the thirs Avengers film but with them fighting each otehr it makes for a dynamic storyline and it builds off the tention that has been built over the course of the MCU. It also setes the rest of the MCU into a whole new direction that will change comic book films forever.
8. Everybody Wants Some!!
One thing Richard Linklater is good at is mixing baseball and Texas together into a perfect combonation to make a great film. This film is basically a glorified sequel to Dazed and Confused and you can see where the similarities are in both films. The cast is fantastic and it has everything you would expect to see from a Linklater film.
7. Eye in the Sky
This might one of the most intesne films of the year. As mentioned beofre in the the review of the film, it feels like a modern day version of Dr. Strangleove in a quest to figure out what the right decision is for this fighter pilot. There are so many great back and forth scenes between the both groups involved and the lead for each are fantastic and Alan Rickman is masterful genius in his role that he deserves and Oscar nomiantion, but he unfortunately won't.
6. The Invitation
The film is so simple that it makes the film even more intense and horrific. It's a slow burn that forces you to npay attention to every detail just so you can keep up. It also keeps you on your toes because being so simple, it's not predictable in the least little bit and you're just hooked from the moement go as you see all of these weird things happen.
5. The Witch
While I have said that we might not see an iconic horror film soon, I tend to make exceptions and besides The Conjuring, this film is right up there with it. It does follow along with the same paint by numbers scheme that every horror film does nowadays and it creates new way to scare you. It has some really marvelous and terrifying creatures that gives the creatures in Pan's Labyrinth a run for it's money. It's just so full of twists and turns that keep you on the edge of you seat the entire time.
4. Green Room
This film is fun and intense film to watch and it makes it more heartbrekaing knowing that this was one of Anton Yelchin's final films. It's a film with some surprising performances especially from both Yelchin and Patrick Stewart who plays a completely different character then we are used to seeing him in. It doesn't use any cheap scares and it really just feels like that this is omething that could actually happen whne being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
3. Zootopia
Some people say that you can't go to the well over and over again and expect it to work every time. Well this film follows along the same things that Disney has done in the past, but it really works in this film. It deals with a lot of different emotions and it's even better with a world completely filled with animals. It has a great message and it was just a complete ball of fun.
2. The Jungle Book (2016)
Live-action remakes of every Dinsey animated film seems to be the direction the company is going and this film just adds to the list of great Disney films. The fact that the entire film was shot on green and blue screen in a studio in Hollywood is a brilliant technical achievement and all the credit goes to director Jon Favreau and his ambitious direction. The visual effects loof beautuiful and the voice cast is just one of the best assembled and it amkes for overall entertaining film.
1. Deadpool
When you claim yourself as not only the best superhero film of the year, but the best comedy of the years as well, then you have a complete a perfect film. This is a film fans have been clamoring for for a long time and the fact that we finally got it is an achievement in and of itself. We owe a lot of gratitude to Ryan Reynolds for continuing to push for this film to be made and the fact that Fox was willing to take a chance on making it. This film has been tough to beat all year, but there are some films yet to come out that will compete for the number 1 spot, but for now this film holds the crown.
So ladies and gentlemen what are some of your favorite films of the year so far and what do you think of my list? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
