My Review of The Purge: Election Year

So I recently watched The Purge: Election Year and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

As a young girl, Sen. Charlie Roan (played by Elizabeth Mitchell) survived the annual night of lawlessness that took the lives of her family members. As a presidential candidate, Roan is determined to end the yearly tradition of blood lust once and for all. When her opponents hatch a deadly scheme, the senator finds herself trapped on the streets of Washington, D.C., just as the latest Purge gets underway. Now, it's up to Leo Barnes (played by Frank Grillo), her head of security, to keep her alive during the next 12 hours of mayhem.

This was a decent film. The Purge franchise has been both hit an miss with both films being one or the other and this one fits right in the middle. The premise is something that you would expect in the sense that it's expanding on the mythology of The Purge and making it more of a bigger deal around the country then around Los Angeles like the last film. Frank Grillo is back and his character has more depth and you can connect with him more that you've seen him in the last film and his character develops a lot more as this film goes on. While the premise was expected, the execution of it was brutal and it didn't make a lot of sense. There's a scene in the film that just feels out of place and it feels forced just for one specific character and it doesn't do much to progress the story. Outside of Frank Grillo, there aren't many characters you can connect with and they come of as annoying or stupid. It does ramp up the action from the previous films and it can get pretty gory at times which can get a little annoying and unrealistic. Going back with the poor execution of the story, it's also predictable and you can see the ending from a mile away. It is ironic however that this film in a way is a reflection of our current society and it does paint a pretty sad and bleak outlook for where our country is currently going. Overall it's a bland a predictable film that has a great premise, but poor execution. I give The Purge: Election Year a 5 out of 10.
