My Review of The BFG

So I recently watched The BFG and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado........

An elderly giant man holds a little human girl in his hand, while both look at one another.

Ten-year-old Sophie (played by Ruby Barnhill) is in for the adventure of a lifetime when she meets the Big Friendly Giant (played by Mark Rylance). Naturally scared at first, the young girl soon realizes that the 24-foot behemoth is actually quite gentle and charming. As their friendship grows, Sophie's presence attracts the unwanted attention of Bloodbottler (played by Bill Hader), Fleshlumpeater (played byJemaine Clement) and other giants. After traveling to London, Sophie and the BFG must convince Queen Victoria (played by Penelope Wilton) to help them get rid of all the bad giants once and for all.

This was a really fun film to watch. Stephen Spielberg is a phenomenal director and he's usually directing either sci-fi films, political films or war films so for him to step out of his comfort zone is refreshing and his direction is perfect in this film to help you along in the journey with the two main characters. The story itself is pretty dull, but there are a lot of fun moments, yet some feel forced and predictable. The visual effects in the film are fantastic and the work done for Mark Rylance's motion capture character is gorgeous and Andy Serkis might have some competition to deal with. Ruby Barnhill was fun to watch as Sophie and you can really see the joy in her eyes as this film goes along because she had a fun time making it. The film does move at a pretty slow pace and it gives you a lot of exposition that seems unnecessary. There are quite a few emotional and charming moments that make this film stand out from the rest of Spielberg's films. The film also marks a pretty big achievement in that it's the first ever Disney film directed by Spielberg and you can bet he'll be counted on again by the studio. Overall this film is a lot fun with some great performances and gorgeous visuals, but the story is nothing really new and it forces a lot of unnecessary material down you throat. I give The BFG a 7.5 out of 10.
