My Review of Rebooted Star Trek Film Franchise

With Star Trek Beyond being released this weekend and it being the third film in the newly rebooted star Trek franchise, I thought it would be fitting to review the other two films in the rebooted franchise. So without further ado...

Star Trek

Aboard the USS Enterprise, the most-sophisticated starship ever built, a novice crew embarks on its maiden voyage. Their path takes them on a collision course with Nero (played by Eric Bana), a Romulan commander whose mission of vengeance threatens all mankind. If humanity would survive, a rebellious young officer named James T. Kirk (played by Chris Pine) and a coolly logical Vulcan named Spock (played by Zachary Quinto) must move beyond their rivalry and find a way to defeat Nero before it is too late.

This is just simply a fantastic film. Star Trek has been a keystone property for years and when the last film came out back in 2002 (Star Trek: Nemesis) and failed miserably, people thought that the franchise was dead in the water. But thankfully Paramount had faith in it and stuck with and we got an amazing film. JJ Abrams was the perfect choice to direct the film in a lot of ways, but most importantly he is a fan and he gets what Star Trek means to people. The casting was another key aspect in the sense that everyone had to be the right fit or people would be immediately disinterested. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and Zoe Saldana are all perfect choices to play younger versions of the original cast that we love so much and they all give fantastic performances. To see a modern Star Trek film with all of the various new technologies we have is just breathtaking and it really completes the vision creator Gene Rodenberry once had when he created the show back in 1966. The action scenes are brilliant and they really keep you on the edge of your seat. It's also great to see a new refreshing story with a new villain because sometimes the villains in these types of films can all be the same, but Nero is just special in a lot of ways. Another thing about the film that really helps the comparison to the old show is the comedy and every joke hits perfectly making the film have a really relaxed feel to it. Overall this film benefits by making it connect more with the television series and just giving us a simple story to help usher in a new era of Star Trek. I give Star Trek a 10 out of 10.

Star Trek Into Darkness
The poster shows a flaming starship falling toward Earth, with smoke coming out of it. The middle of the poster shows the title "Star Trek Into Darkness" in dark gray letters, while the production credits and the release date are shown at the bottom of the poster.

The crew of the Starship Enterprise returns home after an act of terrorism within its own organization destroys most of Starfleet and what it represents, leaving Earth in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Capt. James T. Kirk (played by Chris Pine) leads his crew (played by Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoë Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin) on a mission to capture a one-man weapon (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) of mass destruction, thereby propelling all of them into an epic game of life and death.

This was a really fun film. As mentioned before with Star Trek and that's that JJ Abrams is the perfect choice for the franchise and he proves it again with this film. Now the film has a pretty dense plot in the sense that it pretty much borrows from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (my favorite Star Trek film) in a lot of different ways such as the villain, the lines and it ends up flipping the ending of the film (sorry for the spoiler, but it's been 3 years since the film came out). With that however we do get a lot of character development from the main cast as we go on new adventure with them in this film. There are quite a few predictable moments out side of the very obvious marks from The Wrath of Khan which makes the film a little boring when you know what is going to happen. However the action scenes and visuals really make up a lot of ground on the pretty bad parts of the film. Going back to the performances, Benedict Cumberbatch is phenomenal as Khan Noonien Singh, however he isn't used as much, but when he is used, he just commands the screen and you can really tell how invested he was in the role. Overall this film does have a predictable plot, but the performances, visuals and action are enough to make up for a lot of the flaws. I give Star Trek Into Darkness an 8 out of 10.

Overall franchise rating average: 9 out of 10
