My Review of the Ghostbusters Franchise

With the new Ghostbusters film being released this weekend, I thought it would be fitting to review the other films in the Ghostbusters franchise. So without further ado...

Ghostbusters (1984)

After the members of a team of scientists (played by Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray) lose their cushy positions at a university in New York City, they decide to become "ghostbusters" to wage a high-tech battle with the supernatural for money. They stumble upon a gateway to another dimension, a doorway that will release evil upon the city. The Ghostbusters must now save New York from complete destruction.

This is an absolute filmmaking masterpiece. To have a film like this, you need to have everything working in your favor such as the director, script and cast all fitting together like a perfect puzzle and this film got very lucky. It had two of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live who most people consider the funniest of the lucky few to be on the show. It also had a great director behind the camera in Ivan Reitman who just let the actors be themselves and help crafting the story around their performances. Both Aykroyd and Ramis wrote such a perfect script that has a really fun story behind it and a lot of great jokes that are just too good not to laugh at. This film just has everything you need to be the perfect comedy film to last for generations and generations to come. Overall this films is complete perfection and there really isn't anyway you can go wrong with the film. I give Ghostbusters (1984) a 10 out of 10.

Ghostbusters II

After saving New York City from a ghost attack, the Ghostbusters -- a team of spirit exterminators -- is disbanded for demolishing parts of the city during the battle. But when Ghostbuster Peter Venkman (played by Bill Murray) learns that spirits have taken an interest in his son, the men launch a rogue ghost-chasing mission. The quest quickly goes awry, landing them in court. But when the ghosts turn on the judge, he issues an order allowing the Ghostbusters to get back to work.

This film is a complete embarrassment. As always mentioned, the one thing you can never do with any comedy sequel is re-tell the story that you had in the first film and you have to make it somewhat original. This film does none of that and it makes for a terrible film. Nothing about this film even remotely feels like a Ghostbusters film and that's actually pretty sad considering there had only been one Ghostbusters film before this one. Nothing in the film is even remotely funny and it's even sadder that a lot of the jokes in this film were the exact same ones from the first film, but in a different context and some work in this film better than in the other film. If it wasn't for the fantastic cast, then this film would't have even had a chance and even though Aykroyd and Ramis failed on the script, they still did a great job with Murray and Hudson to at least keep you entertained through the film. Overall this fails in comparison with its predecessor in every category. but seeing the core group on screen together is enough for you to at least watch the film. I give Ghostbusters II a 3 out of 10.
