1-20-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

The saga will be continuing a little later than originally planned. Rian Johnson‘s Star Wars: Episode VIII, which was planned for release on May 26, 2017, will instead arrive nearly seven months later. The studio has had Episode VIII delayed until December 15, 2017. The move to have Episode VIII delayed follows the extraordinary success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was the first Star Wars movie to premiere in December. In the popular holiday moviegoing corridor, it smashed numerous records, including biggest domestic and global debuts of all time as well as the biggest domestic second and third weekends, en route to becoming the highest-grossing domestic release of all time with over $861 million and the third-biggest global release ever with $1.887 billion. Written and directed by Johnson, Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently in pre-production and will begin principal photography in London next month. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman will produce and J.J. Abrams, Tom Karnowski, and Jason McGatlin will executive produce. The Episode VIII delay will now see the film opening opposite Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One.

I hate to hear this news, but I understand the move. The reason why I hate it is because I was excited that a new Star Wars film was coming out just a year and a half after Episode VII and now we have to wait 2 full years before we get another Star Wars episode. However I understand the move simply because Disney has now figured out that no big blockbusters are going to come out on December for the time being other than more Avatar films. They see how successful Episode VII was in December and they are hoping Episode VIII will do the same. Plus they have Rogue One already planned for December of this year so it wouldn't shock me if they move the other spin-off films and Episode IX to December and make it holiday tradition for Star Wars films to come out in December. Like I said I'll hate the wait, but it makes a lot of sense.

Sony Pictures has announced a few changes to their release calendar starting with their upcoming Spider-Man reboot, a co-production with Marvel Studios. Previously set for July 28, 2017, Spider-Man will now be released on July 7, 2017. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales previously held that spot, but it was just moved to May 2017. Tom Holland will star as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in the upcoming film, after making his debut in Captain America: Civil War. He’ll be joined by Marisa Tomei as Aunt May. Set to be directed by Jon Watts, the solo Spider-Man movie will be written by Vacation writers and directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.

I really like this move. One thing it does is show that they are a little ahead of schedule on the development and they feel that we as fans shouldn't wait longer than we have to. Another thing it does is shows that they studio has faith in the film to have come out the weekend after the 4th of July. However it is stuck in the middle of a few films like Despicable Me 3 which will come out the week before as well as another Sony film which is the Uncharted film (I expect this film to move) and then War of the Planet of the apes comes out the weekend after Spider-Man. I feel that this films financial success for the long haul will be determined by it's opening weekend and if it is really good then I think financially the film will have nor problem. I say that has to be big because the second weekend dropoff could be huge with a Planet of the Apes film hot on it's heels. I think the film might have been better served if it had stayed on it's original date simply due to the competition, but I like it because we get the film 3 weeks earlier.

Paramount Pictures has set their big screen Baywatch film for release on May 19, 2017. That’s a date that the studio previously had earmarked for a followup to last year’s Terminator Genisys. The future of the Terminator franchise is now uncertain as plans for more franchise installments have been removed from Paramount’s schedule. Set to star Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach and Ilfenesh Hadera, the Baywatch film offers a big-screen take on the television series that originally premired on NBC in 1989. The original Baywatch cast included David Hasselhoff, Parker Stevenson, Shawn Weatherly, Billy Warlock, Erika Eleniak, Peter Phelps, Brandon Call and Holly Gagnier. The series was initially not a success and was cancelled after a single season. Plans were made, however, to move “Baywatch” into first-run syndication and, in 1991, “Baywatch” returned to the airwaves where it continued for a full decade, bringing in new cast members like Yasmine Bleeth and Pamela Anderson. The show also received a short-lived spinoff, “Baywatch Hawaii.” “This is my beach b*tch!” Johnson wrote when he first announced his connection to the film in 2013. “Rumors are true… we’re making #BAYWATCH the movie. Edgy, raunchy and hopefully, funny as all hell. Cue slo mo running on the beach... #WhoNeedsMouthToMouth #RedShortsBeHugginABrotha” Although several writers have been attached to the Baywatch movie, the most recent draft hails from the Friday the 13th pair of Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. Earlier reports suggested that the film will offer a comedy-heavy take that has little to do with the original series. Parts were reportedly written, however, for both Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff to reprise their roles. Whether or not that remains the plan is, at the moment, unconfirmed. Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief director Seth Gordon is helming the new Baywatch film, which is being produced by Dwayne Jonson alongside Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Ivan Reitman and Douglas Schwartz.

I really love this date as well. Look if this film had any other date that wasn't a summer release date then they needed to stop production because the film is based on beaches and it would've been odd to see the Baywatch film during Christmas. I also like the date because that's a date that is near the beginning of the Summer movie season which shows that the studio has faith that the film can do good. Right now it doesn't have any competition, but that will soon change and the reason why it doesn't have competition is because it is still early in 2016 and some studios haven't figured out how they are going to handle their more original properties and stories. I wasn't a huge fan of the tv show, but I think this film is going to be a lot of fun especially with The Rock involved.

Foresight Unlimited announced today that Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious) will direct the upcoming disaster action thriller Category 5. With production slated for Spring/Summer 2016, Category 5 follows a team of tech hackers who infiltrate a U.S. Mint facility on a small coastal town to steal $102 million in cash, just as a disastrous Category 5 hurricane, the storm of the century, is about to strike and level it to the ground. The only other two people left in the town, a meteorologist and a female treasury agent, must survive the horrific storm while stopping the thieves from getting away with the heist of the century. Foresight Unlimited will handle foreign sales and introduce the film to buyers in Berlin next month. Casting is currently underway. The film will be produced by Karen Baldwin, Michael Tadross Jr., and Danny Roth. Howard Baldwin, Mark Damon, Bill Immerman and Tamara Birkemoe will executive produce. Director Rob Cohen said: “Crossing a heist movie set amidst the intense action of a natural disaster was an idea to which I truly responded. It’s a chance for me to get back to my roots in doing the adrenaline-pumped action/special effects films I love to create.” Foresight’s Mark Damon said: “Rob Cohen is an incredibly smart and inventive action director and we are delighted to be part of “Category 5”. Windhauser’s script details an extraordinary race against the elements, which we are confident, with Cohen’s vision, will be a breathtaking adventure for audiences worldwide.” Cohen takes on the action-film having risen to prominence through previous directorial roles including The Fast and the Furious starring Vin Diesel and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor starring Brendan Fraser for Universal; xXx starring Vin Diesel for Columbia Pictures; and Alex Cross starring Tyler Perry for Summit Entertainment. He most recently directed The Boy Next Door starring Jennifer Lopez for Universal Pictures, and will direct The Adventures of Marco Polo for Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman at Paramount Pictures.

This idea sounds really ridiculous, but I like it. I think Rob Cohen is a pretty decent director and if you look at some of his previous films, this actually fits right into his wheelhouse. Who would have ever though you would be able to mix a heist film with a disaster film, I mean those two ideas don't sound like a good mix, but I think this could be a really fun film. People always complain that there aren't any original ideas left in Hollywood and here's one of them. I think as long as you go into the film without any expectations, then the film could actually turn out to be decent.

Academy Award winner and current nominee Jennifer Lawrence has just lined up a new project in the form of Marita. The Hollywood Reporter has the news, explaining that the true story arrives from American Hustle co-writer Eric Warren Singer. Marita would showcase the life of Marita Lorenz. Lorenz famously met Fidel Castro when she was 19 and, over the years, was both his lover and would-be assassin. Lorenz’s story was the subject of a 2001 documentary, titled Dear Fidel. That film sums up Lorenz’s incredible story with the following official description: Dear Fidel . . . With these words Marita Lorenz begins her letter to the Cuban leader in the spring of 2000. She met him as a nineteen-year-old on board the Berlin where her father was captain. They began an affair and she became pregnant by him. After eight months of passion Fidel Castro lost interest in her and Marita was given another shock when, in her sixth month, she was forced to undergo an abortion. She meant nothing to Fidel anymore but she attracted the attention of the CIA. However, Marita did not fulfil her task – to kill Castro. Nevertheless, she continued working for the American government. There then followed a series of colourful episodes – an affair with a former Venezuelan dictator, involvement in the Watergate scandal, a secret mission during which she met Lee Harvey Oswald, later accused of assassinating president Kennedy, espionage for the FBI, contact with Mafia bosses... Sony Pictures is developing Marita with Matt Tolmach attached to produce. It’s noted that, thanks to recent embargoes being lifted, Marita may take up production in Cuba itself.

This is terrific casting. Now look everyone has their opinion on Jennifer Lawrence and while I think she is a great actress, I myslef am getting a little fatigued of Jennifer Lawrence. I feel that every female lead role recently has gone to her and while I know it hasn't, I just feel overwhelmed hearing she's in a new film. However I say that, but I think this is a great role for her. It's a story that not a lot of people know about so it'll be interesting to see the story come to life. I say that Jennifer Lawrence is perfect for the role because of what she has been able to do physically as Mystique in the new X-Men films and her playing an assassin for Fidel Castro really peaks my interest. This could very well be an Oscar bait type role for Lawrence, but for now we'll wait and see.

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen, which of these stories peaked your interest or was there another story that interested you? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
