1-13-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Universal Pictures and Working Title Films have revealed the new trailer for Joel and Ethan Coen’s latest feature film, Hail, Caesar!, their first since 2013’s Inside Llewyn Davis. Check out the Hail, Caesar! trailer, which features an extended scene from the film below. Four-time Oscar-winning filmmakers the Coen brothers (The Big Lebowski, Fargo) write and direct Hail, Caesar!, an all-star comedy set during the latter years of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Starring Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, Sicario), George Clooney (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Burn After Reading), Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Tilda Swinton (Only Lovers Left Alive, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Channing Tatum (Magic Mike, 21 Jump Street), Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Jonah Hill (Moneyball, The Wolf of Wall Street), Hail, Caesar! follows a single day in the life of a studio fixer who is presented with plenty of problems to fix. Brolin plays the fixer, based on real-life MGM executive Eddie Mannix. Hail, Caesar! is produced by the Coen brothers under their Mike Zoss Productions banner, with Working Title Films and Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan. Universal will release the film on February 5, 2016.

This was a really great scene. It was more of a scene than a trailer, but it still did it's purpose and it made me laugh the entire way through. This is going to be an amazing film to watch simply because of the Coen Brothers because every film they touch directing wise is perfect in my eyes and I don't think this film we'll be bad. The film also has a really talented cast full of previous Oscar winners and nominees and hopefully this doesn't end up like the last Clooney film The Monuments Men which also had a great cast, but the film was terrible.

You would think that any director who made a movie like Mad Max: Fury Road that was both a box office triumph and the best-reviewed wide release movie of 2015 would want to make a sequel. However, despite having accrued enough material for two more Mad Max movies, George Miller has told Page 6 that he is essentially finished with the franchise. “I won’t make more ‘Mad Max’ movies,” said Miller. “‘Fury Road’ was forever getting completed. If you finish one in a year, it’s considered a leap of faith. Start, stop, start again. I’ve shot in Australia in a field of wild flowers and flat red earth when it rained heavily forever. We had to wait 18 months and every return to the US was 27 hours. Those ‘Mad Maxes’ take forever. I won’t do those anymore.” With four Mad Max movies under his belt in a filmography that only includes nine feature films, the 70-year-old director probably has a few other stories he’d like to tell before riding through the gates of Valhalla. Like his contemporary George Lucas, who directed four Star Wars movies before passing the torch to a new generation of filmmakers, it seems Miller would not be adverse to having a younger helmer play in his post-apocalyptic sandbox. That’s essentially what he told Studio 360 a few days ago, although he seemed a little less severe in the possibility of never doing more himself. “What happened to Max after ‘Fury Road’? What happened before ‘Fury Road’? What happened to the other characters?” Miller said. “Those stories are there — probably not as the next film but the film after. I’d like to do one of them. We’ll see. As John Lennon said, life is what happens when you’re making other plans. There are so many other directors out there. People are directing younger and younger. They’re getting a real sense of cinema very, very early. There are some great directors out there.”

If Fury Road were to be Miller’s final say on the character, it would be a fitting farewell, and no one could say he didn’t leave every ounce of guzzoline on the floor. The project sprang to life in the early 2000s with Mel Gibson still in the lead, then was briefly planned as an animated film before embarking on a tortuous 3-year production process with Tom Hardy in the lead, so we can’t fault him for not wanting to go through that logistical nightmare again. It also wouldn’t be unheard of for Miller to co-direct another Mad Max film, as he did with George Ogilvie on 1985’s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Despite rumors that Warner Bros. offered Miller a stab at a Man of Steel sequel, the Australian is apparently going much smaller for his mysterious next directorial outing. “I’ve got something a bit smaller before we go back out into the wasteland — something that’s contemporary that we can get through fairly quickly,” said Miller to Entertainment Weekly last week. “And something with not too much technical difficulty. Something more performance-based and so on, just to clear the exhaust.” Of course, these are still early days on the Mad Max 5 and 6 front, although with Blu-ray/DVD sales going through the roof, it seems like only a matter of time before Hardy slaps on the leather jacket again to meet the challenges a post-apocalyptic landscape has to offer. All we know right now is Charlize Theron’s Furiosa is not expected to play a central role. Even the proposed title Miller previously revealed for the next movie, “Mad Max: The Wasteland,” is also apparently in flux.

I really hate hearing this news. George Miller is a fantastic director and what he was able to do with Mad Max; Fury Road was a cinematic achievement and the fact that this film basically took 30 years to make is a statement within itself. I honestly don't blame him for not wanting to do more, but it's kinda sad to hear that. The Mad Max franchise is his baby and to see someone else behind the camera for a Mad Max film will be weird, but it could be nice to see another directors vision for the franchise. If in fact this is George Miller's last go at a Mad Max film, then he went off on a high note especially with the Academy Awards in which I expect Mad Max: Fury Road to have at least 10 or 11 nominations including Best Picture and Best Director when the nominations are announced tomorrow.

Open Road Films (via iTunes Movie Trailers) has released a new trailer for Triple 9, the gritty, action-packed crime thriller starring Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games, Zombieland) and Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs, The Reader) from acclaimed director John Hillcoat (The Road, Lawless). You can check out the Triple 9 trailer below. The hard-hitting thriller involves a group of dirty cops blackmailed by the Russian mob into performing a seemingly impossible heist that involves the murder of a rookie police officer. Hillcoat’s impressive ensemble cast also includes Casey Affleck (Interstellar, Out of the Furnace), Chiwetel Ejiofor (The Martian, Doctor Strange), Aaron Paul (Need For Speed, “Breaking Bad”), Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies, Point Break), Norman Reedus (“The Walking Dead,” The Boondock Saints) and Anthony Mackie (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Pain & Gain). Based on a screenplay by Matt Cook, Triple 9 will be released by Open Road Films domestically on February 26, 2016.

That was amazing to watch. Every time I watch a trailer for this film I get more and more excited and the anticipation is killing me. This is an amazing cast stacked full of crazy brilliant talent and it helps when you have a director like John Hillcoat who has been nothing short of spectacular when it comes to directing. I love how the this film feels and I'm glad that a film like this is so high on my most anticipated list for the first half of the year, but also for the entire year, because people always talk about no originality anymore and right here is original film just like the aforementioned Hail,Caesar! and I'm excited for this film.

Warner Bros. Pictures has, according to The Hollywood Reporter, landed the stunning Amber Heard (The Danish Girl, Magic Mike XXL) to take the female lead in director James Wan’s upcoming Aquaman movie. She will be playing the character Mera, Aquaman’s love interest and eventual Queen of Atlantis, who first appeared in the comics in 1963. Mera will make her screen debut in Zack Snyder’s Justice League Part One, which begins shooting in April. Jason Momoa will be headlining the Aquaman feature film, which is based on the classic DC Comics sea dwelling superhero. Aquaman made his first comic book appearance way back in 1941’s “More Fun Comics” #73. Created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, Aquaman went on to become a founding member of the Justice League of America two decades later. Until now, the character has never made it to the big screen. Aquaman’s sole live-action appearance was as a teen on the WB’s “Smallville.” The character was planned for a spinoff series, “Mercy Reef,” but the property never made it beyond the pilot stage. Before appearing in his solo film, Momoa’s Aquaman will make his big screen debut in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, set to hit theaters on March 25, 2016. He’ll be back for Justice League Part One, arriving November 10, 2017. Aquaman then hits the following summer on July 27, 2018 with Justice League Part Two coming to theaters on June 14, 2019. The studio is developing two scripts for the Aquaman solo movie simultaneously, with Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: Rise of an Empire) penning one and David Leslie Johnson (Wrath of the Titans, The Conjuring 2) the other. Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder and Zack Snyder are serving as producers. Heard will next be seen opposite Cara Delevingne, Theo James and her husband Johnny Depp in the mystery thriller London Fields.

I think this is pretty interesting casting to hear. Amber Heard is an actress who has been hit and miss (more miss than hit) in her career and for her to get into a comic book film says a lot about the confidence DC has in her. I think this is a nice role for her simply because in the comics Mera was portrayed as a gorgeous woman and Amber Heard is that so it makes sense for the to play this character. It's also a nice role for her in the sense that she won't be in the lead role and she'll be more off to the side. I'm looking forward to seeing her in this film and how she'll do up against Jason Momoa.

TriStar Pictures (Sony) has revealed the first trailer for the Jodie Foster-directed thriller Money Monster, starring George Clooney and Jack O’Connell. You can check out the Money Monster trailer below. O’Connell, the star of Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, and the Academy Award-winning Julia Roberts join Clooney for the fast-paced, character-driven thriller written by Jamie Linden. Daniel Dubiecki, who worked with Clooney on Up in the Air, and Lara Alameddine developed the script alongside Foster. Clooney stars as Lee Gates, a bombastic television stock huckster, whose program (the titular “Money Monster”), and life, are taken hostage by an outraged gunman. As much of the world watches live, Gates must keep himself alive and, with help from the woman who produces the show, uncover the truth behind a tangle of big money lies. Said to be “taught and tense,” Money Monster unfolds in near real time. Roberts will play the producer, Nancy Fenn, while O’Connell is Kyle Budwell, a blue collar man pushed to his limits who serves as the story’s antagonist. Dubiecki and Alameddine’s The Allegiance Theater are producing together with Clooney and his Smokehouse Pictures partner Grant Heslov. Alan DiFore and Jim Kouf wrote the original draft of the script. TriStar will release Money Monster on May 13, 2016.

I really liked this trailer, but I felt it showed too much. It basically went through the entire film and it showed us scenes outside of the studio with both Clooney and O'Connell and that didn't need to be shown. I do like the concept of the film and the cast looks really solid, but I feel like I know the entire film. Hopefully the second trail can be better and not show as much.
