So I recently watched Black Mass and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado....
In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (played by Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James "Whitey" Bulger (played by Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.
This is a really hard film to watch. This is a film that peaked everyone's interest (including myself) simply because of how Johnny Depp looked in the two trailers and that sold a lot of people on the film. Not only does Johnny Depp look menacing, mean and gritty, he gives one of the best performances of his career. While this doesn't signify that he is back, it does show that if he commits to a role and actually tries, then he can give an Oscar worthy performance and he absolutely deserves a nomination at the upcoming Oscars and he has a great chance to win the award. Joel Edgerton also gives and Oscar worthy performance and he has really good shot to walk away with the Best Supporting Oscar. The entire cast is great on screen together and they all give magnificent performances. The problem with the film is that it would use time jumps get through scenes and it didn't really go into detail on lot of key moments in the film. With those time jumps, not every character is developed well and you honestly don't care about several of them despite great performances. Overall this is a performance driven movie with a lot of Oscar potential. I give Black Mass a 7 out of 10.
So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Black Mass, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
