9-9-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Last week, legendary director Steven Spielberg made headlines when he said that “the superhero movie” would go “the way of the Western,” which were once the prime staple of Hollywood filmmaking. Now director Zack Snyder, who has helmed three different superhero movies including the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with plans for two “Justice League” movies in the future, opened up about Spielberg’s quote and offered a thoughtful reply. “He might not be wrong,” Snyder tells Yahoo. “I think it puts more pressure on us, the filmmakers, to not just crank out superhero movies for the sake of it. To me, the one thing I love working in the DC universe is that Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman are American mythology. It’s not about making a superhero, it’s a mythological universe that we live in. That I hope stands the test of time. They stood the test of time. That’s hopefully the sort of magic bullet. But who knows what audiences will want in the future…To me it’s about the drama, the humanity of it. Those are like Shakespearean characters, Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent, they have inherent drama built into their makeup.” The outlet also asked Snyder about the constant stream of rumors that surround the slate of DC movies, and he took the chance to shoot down one of the popular ones. “It’s funny because every now and then someone will touch on something that’s kind of true, but the next thing they say makes me realize that they took a wild guess. They’ll say something and I’ll say “Oh snap, they must have seen the script.” And then they’ll say, “And this happens!” And then I’ll go, They have no idea what they’re talking about. It’s fun for everyone to speculate and take shots and think of things and try to sell it. There’s an industry in selling your guess. [People think], “I’m going to make a fake script and look like I read the real one.” What length are you willing to go There’s a rumor that my son is [playing] Robin. It’s not true. Now there are all these images of him that people have made where he’s dressed like Robin. It’s fun to hear and see them.” Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Henry Cavill in the role of Clark Kent/Superman, and Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, with Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane returning from Man of Steel, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, and Holly Hunter in a role newly created for the film. Jason Momoa will also be making an appearance as Aquaman. The film is set to open worldwide on March 25, 2016.

I really like these comments. First off I kind of agree with what Snyder and Spielberg are saying because the market has become a little too saturated with comic book films, but I tend to disagree because of the way comic books films are made. They all don't have the same tone and they tend to mix with other genres such as Captain America: The Winter Solider is like a spy film and Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor 2 are somewhat of space operas so I don't think comic book movies will go away as long as they are able to mix with other genres. As for the rumors that Zack Snyder is talking about the one in particular is the one going around that Jared Leto's Joker is actually Jason Todd who was the second Robin. In the graphic novel "A Death in the Family" The Joker kills Jason Todd's Robin and with the Robin costume showing up in the most recent Batman v. Superman trailer and with Jared Leto's having a certain tattoo next to his eye, people are convinced that this is true when it isn't. I like that Snyder does read some of the things people have come up with and I can't wait to see which rumors are true and which aren't.

Having just premiered at the Telluride Film Festival to stellar reviews, A24 has revealed the full trailer for the psychological drama Room, starring Brie Larson, Jacob Tremblay, Joan Allen and William H. Macy. You can check out the Room trailer below. Room tells the extraordinary story of Jack (Tremblay), a spirited 5-year old who is looked after by his loving and devoted Ma (Larson of Short Term 12 and Trainwreck). Like any good mother, Ma dedicates herself to keeping Jack happy and safe, nurturing him with warmth and love and doing typical things like playing games and telling stories. Their life, however, is anything but typical—they are trapped—confined to a windowless, 10-by-10-foot space, which Ma has euphemistically named “Room.” Ma has created a whole universe for Jack within Room, and she will stop at nothing to ensure that, even in this treacherous environment, Jack is able to live a complete and fulfilling life. But as Jack’s curiosity about their situation grows, and Ma’s resilience reaches its breaking point, they enact a risky plan to escape, ultimately bringing them face-to-face with what may turn out to be the scariest thing yet: the real world. Based on the award-winning global bestseller by Emma Donoghue, Room is directed by Lenny Abrahamson (Frank) and will be released on October 16 in New York and Los Angeles, then nationwide November 6.

This was a really amazing trailer. Let me be the first to say that I have never read the novel and I had no clue what the film was about, but after reading a description of the plot I am really looking forward to the movie. Brie Larson looks absolutely fantastic in the film and their is already a considerable amount of Oscar buzz for her and I can see why. This will be a film that I think everyone needs to see and it could end up being one of my favorites of the year.

Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures have released the first trailer for Michael Dougherty’s Krampus.  You can check out the first Krampus trailer below. When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers. All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family’s home and forcing them to fight for each other if they hope to survive. The Legendary Pictures horror-comedy also stars Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Conchata Ferrell, Stefania Lavie Owen and Krista Stadler. Krampus and his mischievous underlings have been created by the combined efforts of Weta Workshop and Weta Digital, both renowned for their epic work on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies and King Kong, among many others. Written and directed by Dougherty (Trick ’r Treat), Krampus is co-written by Zach Shields and Todd Casey and produced by Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni, Alex Garcia and Dougherty. The film will be released by Universal Pictures on December 4.

This was a really great trailer. Now I honestly don't much about the Krampus, but after seeing the trailer I know now a little bit more about it. Now Kevin Smith is working on his own Krampus film and this isn't his, but I'm looking forward to that film as well is this one. I think this has the potential to be a really scary film with some very good comedic moments as well. I love the concept and the actors involved and I cannot wait to see it.

Variety reports that UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey is set to star in MGM’s upcoming remake of the 1989 movie Road House. Rousey is expected to play a female version of the Patrick Swayze role from the original film. Production on the film is slated to begin next year with the search for a writer to pen the screenplay currently underway.  “It is a great honor to play a part in celebrating the life of a man that inspired so many,” Rousey wrote on Twitter. “I couldn’t be more grateful to have this opportunity to pay respect to the beloved Patrick Swayze…I promise to work incessantly to make sure this project is a tribute his family and fans can be proud of.” Rousey has transitioned from fighting in the ring to fighting on the big screen recently with roles in The Expendables 3, Furious 7, and a cameo as herself in the Entourage movie. The fighter is also set to star as herself in Paramount Pictures’ adaptation of her own New York Times best-selling autobiography, My Fight/Your Fight. In the original film, produced by Joel Silver, Swayze played a bouncer hired to tame a rowdy bar in Missouri called “The Double Deuce.” Though the film only went on to gross just $30 million at the box office, it went on to build a large cult following. Plans for a remake date back as far as 2013 with XXX and The Fast and the Furious director Rob Cohen attached, though it ultimately never materialized.

This is really interesting for two reasons. One it has been rumored for a while that a Road House remake was in the works and to be perfectly honest I don't want this film because I absolutely love the first film so much and I just don't think a remake will be that good. My second interesting point is that Rhonda Rousey is staring in the film. Now while she is the baddest woman on the planet and she could easily beat the crap out of me, she cannot act whatsoever. She's wooden and stale when it comes to acting and I don;t think she is the right choice for this film. Granted Patrick Swayze was the greatest actor in the world, but the original fit his style so well. Hopefully I'm wrong and this film turns out to be fantastic, but there just isn't enough evidence to convince me.

Deadline reports that Patrick Dempsey (“Grey’s Anatomy”) is in final negotiations to take on a role in the upcoming feature film, Bridget Jones’s Baby. Working Title will produce the film which sees Renee Zellweger reprising the title role along with Colin Firth as love interest Mark Darcy. The pair previously appeared in both of the preceding films, Bridget Jones’s Diary in 2001 and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason in 2003. Combined, the two films have grossed over $540 million at the global box office. Sharon Maguire, who directed the original Bridget Jones’s Diary in 2001, will return to direct the feature film from a script she co-wrote with David Nicholls (One Day). Plot details are being kept under wraps, but as you have probably guessed, Bridget Jones will indeed have a baby in the third film of the series. The question remains, however, if the father of the child will be Firth’s Darcy, Dempsey’s new character, or perhaps a third party. Hugh Grant, who appeared in the previous two films, will not reprise his role for “Baby.” Though no release date has been set, Universal will distribute the film which begins principal photography in a few weeks.

I think this is a great casting choice. Patrick Dempsey is a really great actor and I think this is a perfect film for him. A lot of women love him and his nickname when he was on Grey's Anatomy was "McDreamy).  Of course I think he'll play the love interest to Renee Zellweger's character and think that's the most obvious thing in this entire story. I haven't really liked the other two films, but I willing to give this one a chance and maybe it can turn out just fine.
