Weekend Movie News 6-6-14 to 6-8-14

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

It looks like the not-so-long journey to get a new director for Marvel Studios' Ant-Man has finally come to a close and the job has gone to ... Peyton Reed

Marvel.com broke the news just moments ago, but not only do they have a director, one of the previous people mentioned as a possibility to direct, Anchorman co-writer and director Adam McKay, has been hired to "contribute" to the existing script by Wright and co-writer Joe Cornish, presumably to get it into shape to start production next month as planned.

Ant-Man is still scheduled for release on July 17, 2015.

This is shocking news. This wasn't the first name that popped into my head for the new director of Ant-Man. Now looking at Reed's filmography (which is very small), his films haven't been the greatest in the world and I don't know how he'll do with this project. This project will have an eye watching it at all times in hopes it goes off without a hitch.

Deadline brings word tonight that Marvel has begun putting together their casting short list for the upcoming Doctor Strange having finally secured a director in Scott Derrickson.

The site reports that the list consists of two names for the time being, the first being Star Trek Into Darkness and "Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch with the other being Tom Hardy of Bronson and the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road, whose The Dark Knight Rises co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt was previously linked as a potential candidate for the role.

Although a specific release date for Doctor Strange has not yet been set, Marvel has two placeholder dates set for unnamed features on July 8, 2016 and on May 5, 2017. It's looking more and more likely that the good doctor will be claiming one of those spots.

Look I really love what both actors can do and their acting careers/abilities (Tom Hardy is one of my top 10 favorite actors of all-time), but I honestly don't see either of these two being Dr. Strange. If they one of them was announced I would be ok with it, but somewhat disappointed. I'm really hoping for Mads Mikkelsen to get the part.

New photos of Arnold Schwarzenegger on the set of the upcoming Terminator film, currently shooting in New Orleans, have popped up online and can be seen by clicking here and here.

Those wondering why the Terminator might be sporting grey hair will find an explanation from the man himself from just a few months back. "The way that the character is written, it's a machine underneath. It's this metal skeleton. But above that is human flesh. And the Terminator's flesh ages, just like any other human being's flesh. Maybe not as fast. But it definitely ages," he said.

Co-starring Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, Byung Hun Lee and Matt Smith, Terminator is directed by Thor: The Dark World's Alan Taylor from a screenplay by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier. David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance Productions are producing. Skydance's Paul Schwake, Annapurna Pictures' Megan Ellison, Kalogridis and Lussier are executive producing.

Paramount Pictures will distribute the film worldwide on July 1, 2015.

These photos are actually pretty cool. Look whatever you want to say about him, Arnold is still the man and he is still built like a horse. I'm excited to see Arnold to return to the franchise and I hope it can get the bad taste of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator: Salvation out of m mouth.

Jeremy Renner has confirmed to Yahoo! TV that he will again play William Brandt in Mission: Impossible 5. He joins the previously-confirmed Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg in the December 25, 2015 release. The trio starred together in the Brad Bird-directed Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, which opened in December of 2011 and earned an impressive $694.7 million worldwide on a budget of $145 million. Mission: Impossible 5 will be directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote Edge of Tomorrow, now playing in theaters, and directed Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher.

This is great to hear. I though Jeremy Renner was a great addition to the franchise and I'm glad to see him coming back. Many people believe (and I still do) that he'll eventually take over for Tom Cruise once Cruise is done playing Ethan Hunt, but as of right now he's playing second fiddle.

Though technically it's still not official, it's looking more and more likely that Channing Tatum will become the new Gambit in the X-Men franchise and the actor recently revealed to MTV they're starting to lay down the ground work for his potential future in the franchise. "Creatively, we're starting to chug forward. Obviously there's nothing [official]," Tatum said. "There are only conversations and dreams right now, really."

Previous reports indicated that he would be introduced in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse and would follow that with his own spin-off film. Now Tatum says that may not be the case, but either way, they're hoping to change the idea of superhero movies with the character."We've talked about it being a standalone, first, and actually trying to change the 'hero, superhero movie.' Because Gambit is not your typical hero. He's a thief. He walks on the gray. I'm hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones."

Though no writer or director have been attached to the project, it's possible that Gambit could be the "Untitled FOX Marvel Movie" which is currently set for release on July 18, 2018.

This is really nice to hear. It's always good to see an actor be excited to take over a role and wants to help the character in a great image. Eventhough I really wanted to see Taylor Kitsch reprise the role, I'm actually looking forward to Channing Tatum's Gambit.
