6-16-14/6-17-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Since I didn't get to bring you news from yesterday I figured that I would combine today's and yesterday's news (3 stories from each day). So here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Dracula Untold is Universal's return to the classic horror that was made popular during the studio's early days. Of course, expect modern FX, heightened action and a slick look. The period piece opens in theaters on October 17th and, today, we now have your first look at Luke Evans as Prince Vlad and a peek at an international poster.

Gary Shore makes his feature directorial debut with this Dracula origin story from Legendary Pictures. Sarah Gadon and Dominic Cooper also star.

Evans' Vlad is a man who fights for his people and his family but makes a dark pact to ensure their protection. This pact sets him on a path into the supernatural until he becomes the legendary monster we all know.

This poster looks really cool. I really like the vibe that the poster presents and can also foreshadow how the film could play out. I'm really excited for the film and I can't wait to see this take on the untold story of Dracula.

The long-in-development N.W.A. biopic Straight Out of Compton finally started showing some forward progress with the recent casting of Ice Cube's son O'Shea Jackson Jr., to play the teenage version of his father, and now two more relative unknowns have joined the movie as Cube's partners in rhyme. Dr. Dre will be played by Marcus Callendar while the late Eazy E will be played by Jason Mitchell.

Beating out many other actors and rappers for the role of Dre, Marcus Callendar is a theater actor from New York's Shakespeare Lab at the Public Theater who has appeared on HBO's "Criminal Justice" with small roles on "Blue Bloods" and "Elementary." The New Orleans-based Jason Mitchell has had small roles in Mark Wahlberg's movies Contraband and Broken City.

As with all aspects of the movie, the casting has been approved by Cube, Dre and Eazy E's widow Tomica Wright.

The film seems to be moving forward quickly after numerous screenwriters and directors have shown interest in the project over the years, but it looks ready for The Italian Job director F. Gary Gray to start production in a couple of months based on the most recent script by Jonathan Herman. In the last year, Universal Pictures came on board to distribute the project that was put into turnaround by New Line, with plans to presumably release it sometime in 2015. (N.W.A.'s debut album on which the movie's title is based celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2013.)

This is pretty interesting casting. I'm not to familiar with the two actors chosen, but I think that this is the right way to go that way so that Easy E and Dre aren't overshadowed by big name actors. But being somewhat of a fan of N.W.A. I really am curious about this film and let's hope it's great.

20th Century Fox has revealed a second Red Band trailer for Let's Be Cops, the Luke Greenfield-directed action comedy starring Damon Wayans Jr., Jake Johnson, Rob Riggle, Nina Dobrev, James D'Arcy and Andy Garcia. Check it out in the player below.

The August 13 release is the ultimate buddy cop movie except for one thing: they're not cops. When two struggling pals dress as police officers for a costume party, they become neighborhood sensations. But when these newly-minted “heroes” get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line.

This trailer is pretty hilarious. I don't know why I feel this way but I think the film almost looks like a modern-day and raunchier Blues Brothers movie. Seeing this trailer though gets me a little bit excited to see this film.

Following the departure of Will Smith last month, Variety is now reporting that Jared Leto is in talks to take on the lead role of Universal and Legendary Pictures' upcoming adaptation of Marcus Sakey's sci-fi/superhero novel Brilliance. Boasting a screenplay by David Koepp and set to feature Julius Onah in the director's chair, Brilliance is officially described as follows:

In Wyoming, a little girl reads people’s darkest secrets by the way they fold their arms. In New York, a man sensing patterns in the stock market racks up $300 billion. In Chicago, a woman can go invisible by being where no one is looking. They’re called "brilliants," and since 1980, one percent of people have been born this way. Nick Cooper is among them; a federal agent, Cooper has gifts rendering him exceptional at hunting terrorists. His latest target may be the most dangerous man alive, a brilliant drenched in blood and intent on provoking civil war. But to catch him, Cooper will have to violate everything he believes in—and betray his own kind.

Should he join the cast, Leto would star alongside Prometheus star Noomi Repace in the film. Producers on Brilliance include Jon Jashni, Joe Roth and Thomas Tul with Alex Hedlund, Eric McLeod and Palek Patel executive producing.

If true then this news is awesome to hear. Jared Leto after leaving acting for 10 years and came back to give an Oscar winning performance.  I feel that with Leto now back he needs to start taking bigger roles and capitalize on his regained stardom. The movie sounds great and this role fits him perfectly.

Ever since 2012's The Avengers, fans have been nearly begging Marvel Studios for one more go at The Hulk in his own solo film. Since then, the green behemoth himself, Mark Ruffalo, has expressed interest in a solo film, but has previously said there were no plans. Now, in an interview with Digital Spy, Ruffalo says the folks at Marvel Studios are warming up to the idea. "I think they are, for the first time, entertaining the idea of it. When we did The Avengers it was basically 'No!', and now there is some consideration for it. But there's still nothing definitive, not even a skeletal version of what it would be. I look forward to going down that road, if we could crack that nut. I think the Banner/Hulk storyline is obviously not easy a tough nut to crack."

A team-up movie was suggested as a way of bringing The Hulk back with Ruffalo responding: "If they do Iron Man 4 and Banner's in that, that would be great."

Ruffalo also promised in the video some "very cool" science bros. scenes in the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron where he can next be seen as the giant green rage monster.

This is a little refreshing to hear. The casting of Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk (after Edward Norton left) was flat out perfect. After his performance as Bruce Banner/The Hulk in The Avengers a lot of people (including me) are clamoring for a new standalone Hulk film and we may get it in phase 4 or phase 5 if the MCU.

It's been less than 48 hours since Casey Kasem, the radio DJ who voiced the popular cartoon character of Shaggy in the classic "Scooby-Doo" cartoons, passed away and just ten years since the live-action sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, but according to Deadline, Warner Bros. is already looking to reboot the cartoon into a new live-action movie franchise.

They don't have a lot of details about the direction the studio is looking to take, but screenwriter Randall Green has been called upon to rework the popular cartoon characters into a new live-action adventure.

It's unlikely they'll be bringing back any of the cast from the previous two movies, which starred Freddie Prinze Jr, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, Linda Cardellini and Isla Fisher, nor director Raja Gosnell, who has since moved onto The Smurfs and its sequel.

I really hope this news isn't true. Look it's been proven that Scooby-Doo can't work on the big screen. I personally did like the first one but the second one was just flat out awful. I hope that this doesn't come to fruition but it probably will and I don't think people will get behind the film.
