6-3-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Marvel Studios has found its Doctor Strange director! Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose helmer Scott Derrickson will take on the master of the mystic arts. "[Doctor Strange] checks the box off this criteria that I have," Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told SuperHeroHype recently about the long-gestating feature. "He’s totally different from anything else we have."

Although a specific release date for Doctor Strange has not yet been set, Marvel has two placeholder dates set for unnamed features on July 8, 2016 and on May 5, 2017. It's looking more and more likely that the good doctor will be claiming one of those spots.

Derrickson's other directing credits include the 2009 remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still and the upcoming Deliver Us From Evil, hitting theaters July 2.

This is a really interesting choice for the film. I like what Derrickson has done in his previous work and the character of Doctor Strange fits into his wheelhouse. Now let's see who Marvel gets to play the good doctor. Me personally I have three choices 1. Mads Mikkelsen 2. Patrick Dempsey 3. Viggo Mortenson.

Yesterday, TMZ debuted over 40 photos from the Abu Dhabi set of Star Wars: Episode VII and now the notorious website is at it again, having revealed over 20 photos from a soundstage in London that appears to be housing not only an under-construction Millennium Falcon but also a slightly modified X-Wing fighter and one of the creatures previously seen in yesterday's set photos. You can check them out right here

Set to star John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie and Max von Sydow in addition to original cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker, Star Wars: Episode VII will be directed by J.J. Abrams from a script he co-wrote with Lawrence Kasdan. It will open in wide release on December 18, 2015.

Holy crap this is awesome. I seriously can't be believe that they have built a life size version of the Millennium Falcon. But in a way I can simply becuase JJ Abrams has stated that he wants to go back to practical effects (like the original trilogy). With the Falcon the actors will be inside it while a green screen is behind it to get the full effect of the beloved ship. I seriously can't wait for the film to be here.

Paramount Pictures has released the new trailer and poster for Hercules, starring Dwayne Johnson and hitting theaters on July 25. You can check them both out below.

Directed by Brett Ratner, the action adventure also stars Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Joseph Fiennes, Peter Mullan, John Hurt, Rebecca Ferguson, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Aksel Hennie, Reece Ritchie and Tobias Santelmann. The film is based on the Radical Studios graphic novel "Hercules: The Thracian Wars."

Everyone knows the legend of Hercules and his twelve labors. Our story begins after the labors, and after the legend… Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules has become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules' help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail... he must again become the hero he once was... he must embrace his own myth... he must be Hercules.

These both look really cool. First off the poster looks great and eventhough it's plain it'as still pretty cool. Now as for the trailer... holy crap this looks great. The trailer get's me even more excited for the film (eventhough Brett Ratner is directing). I honestly can't wait to see this film and let's hope that it will be better than the The Legend of Hercules (which was released earlier this year).

Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow have delayed Andy and Lana Wachowski's Jupiter Ascending by seven months. Originally slated to hit the big screen on July 18, the sci-fi actioner will now see release on February 6, 2015.

Starring Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, Tuppence Middleton, Doona Bae, James D'Arcy and Tim Pigott-Smith, the film follows Jupiter Jones (Kunis), a young woman born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people's houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

The new release date has Jupiter Ascending going up against Legendary and Universal's fantasy actioner Seventh Son and David Koepp's action comedy Mortdecai, starring Johnny Depp. Also scheduled for release on that date is Run All Night, director Jaume Collet-Serra's third big screen teaming with Liam Neeson. Given that that project is also a Warner Bros. release, it's quite likely to receive an alternate release date in the very near future.

This news doesn't surprise me at all. With Sex Tape recently moving up to that exact date, someone was going to have to move out of a crowded date. But I don't think that it should have moved back to February. Like I keep on saying just move it back to August 8th to give people more of a choice than just Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and a second weekend of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Will Smith is, according to Variety, set to headline an upcoming film that focuses on concussions in the NFL. Announced last fall as a potential directing project for Ridley Scott, the still-untitled film will now be both written and directed by Parkland helmer Peter Landesman.

Based on Jeanne Marie Laskas' 2009 GQ article "Game Brain" (you can read it in its entirety right here), the film will provide a narrative that explores the long-term effects of concussions among professional football players. Smith will play Dr. Bennet Omalu, a real-world forensic neuropathologist whose research has helped bring attention to the issue.

The news of Smith's involvement comes just days after the actor dropped out of Legendary Pictures' superhero tale, Brilliance.

This is pretty interesting news. Now we know why Smith dropped out of Brilliance (a project he's been attached to for a while). This also interests me because it's a story that needs to be told. Concussions are a huge part of the NFL off-the -field discussions over the last couple of years. Now I don't know how I feel about Peter Landesman (he's only directed one film entitled Parkland and I didn't particularly think it was all that great). I hope this movie is good and I'm somewhat looking forward to it.
