6-9-14/6-10-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Since I didn't get to bring you news from yesterday I figured that I would combine today's and yesterday's news (3 stories from each day). So here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

(6/9/14)

Guillermo del Toro said he is currently at work on a script for Pacific Rim 2 with Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand). "I'm working very, very hard with Zak Penn,". "We've been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film, now working on Fox's 'Hieroglyph'] was involved in the storyline and now I'm writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul."

The script hasn't been given the green light, of course. Although, when ShockTillYouDrop.com spoke to Legendary Pictures head Thomas Tull back in March, he sounded like he was up for a sequel. "I was literally just with Guillermo on the set of 'Crimson Peak,'" said Tull. "We talk about it and have some pretty great ideas. If they come to fruition and we get a great script, then we're open to it. Fans seem pretty passionate about it and working with Guillermo. So, we're open to it."

Del Toro said the script for the second film will see the return of Raleigh and Mako and he reiterated what he told us last year... "I'm going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle."

I really hope this news is true. I absolutely loved Pacific Rim (my favorite film of 2013) and I would love to see the sequel. Now to be grounded in reality, the film probably won't happen. I only say this because the film barely made enough money to make a profit and I just don't know if Legendary is willing to take a risk on a Pacific Rim 2.

James Cameron has set Sigourney Weaver to return in the three Avatar sequels scheduled to begin production later this year, the Oscar-winning filmmaker announced today. Weaver joins previously announced cast returnees Sam Worthington, Zoë Saldana and Stephen Lang.

Commented James Cameron: "Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made 'Aliens.' We're good friends who've always worked well together, so it just feels right that she's coming back for the 'Avatar' sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she's playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration."

The as yet untitled Avatar sequels will be filmed back-to-back. The release of the first follow-up will be in December 2016, with the second to follow in December 2017, and the third a year later. Avatar 2, 3, and 4 will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment.

This is pretty interesting. It'll be strange seeing Weaver in the Avatar world after her first character died in the first. But knowing James Cameron he'll come up with a creative way to make everything work in a cohesive manner as he always does.

Already set to star George Clooney in his fourth big screen role for a Joel and Ethan Coen film, Hail Caesar has now added Josh Brolin to its cast. Variety has the news, reporting that the star will re-team with the Coens for the first time since 2007's No Country for Old Men.

Hail Caesar follows a man named Eddie Mannix in his job as a Hollywood fixer in the 1950s. That's somewhat different than the news reported when word of the project first appeared in 2005. It was then suggested that the film would focus on a group of theater actors in the 1920s as they put together a play about ancient Rome. It's a good possibility that the Roman-themed play will now appear in the story as a Hollywood production.

This is really good to hear. Both Clooney and Brolin are two of the best actors in the business today and they are teaming up with a couple of the best directors in the business today. With both actors having previously worked with the Coen brothers it should be great chemistry and a great film.

The first trailer for Dumb and Dumber To will debut today on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," but first comes the poster via Today. Opening in theaters on November, the sequel stars Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Rachel Melvin, Kathleen Turner, Brady Bluhm, Laurie Holden, Steve Tom and Rob Riggle. The original film’s directors, Peter and Bobby Farrelly, take Lloyd and Harry on a road trip to find a child Harry never knew he had and the responsibility neither should ever, ever be given.

This is a pretty great poster. It brings back memories of the first film and it just gets me excited for the film. I just hope that it can at least live up to the original (not be better, just as good).

The first poster for newly-titled The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water has surfaced and can be viewed below! Other than the title and poster tagline given an indication of what to expect, not a lot of details have been revealed yet about the February 6, 2015.

This is actually a nice teaser poster. Now eventhough I'm not too excited for the film this is still a good poster. Hopefully the plot details (when they emerge) will help feel a little enthusiasm for the film.

Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marza Animation Planet, a CG animation film production company of the SEGA SAMMY Group, today announced a partnership to develop a film based on the acclaimed Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. A hybrid CG-animated/live-action feature, the movie will be written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux and produced by Neal H. Moritz through his Original Film banner, along with Marza’s Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi. Toby Ascher will serve as an executive producer.

The film will look to capture Sonic’s irreverent tone and spirit, reuniting him with some of the most revered and infamous characters of the franchise, including the evil Dr. Eggman. Playful, mischievous, and quick on his feet in more ways than one, the world’s fastest hedgehog is known for his ability to move at supersonic speed to protect his friends from their enemies. For more than two decades, Sonic has been one of the world’s biggest gaming icons and a $1 billion franchise with more than 140 million games sold.

Commenting on the announcement, Hannah Minghella, Columbia Pictures’ president of Production said, “There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog, and a built-in international fan base. Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we’re looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before.”

I just ask the question of why? Sony hasn't really done a great job of taking classic characters and making great films out of them. Look Sonic is one of my favorite video game characters and I want him to see justice. Hopefully Sony doesn't screw this one up.
