Weekend Movie News 5-22-15 to 5-24-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

It was revealed back in 2013 that Brad Pitt will be reprising his role as Gerry Lane for an upcoming (still untitled) sequel to World War Z with The Impossible‘s Juan Antonio Bayona attached to direct. Today, Paramount Pictures has revealed that World War Z 2 will be waged on June 9, 2017. That’s the same day that 20th Century Fox has earmarked for its planned Fantastic Four 2. That’s not the only box office showdown potentially in the cards today, either. Locke writer and director Steven Knight will be providing the screenplay for World War Z 2 with Pitt again serving as producer.

This is not surprising one bit. The movie received mixed reviews, but it did have some financial success and it makes sense for Paramount to make a sequel. The big discussion point here is the fact that it will be going up against Fantastic Four 2 and this isn't a great idea. One of these two movies is going to have to move becuase they will eat off of each other's box office intake. Fantastic Four 2 has already had to move twice and I don't think they'll move again. As for World War Z 2 I could see it move to May 12th, 2017 which is the week after Guardians of the Galaxy 2 comes out or they could release it in late August of 2017 since there is nothing for it to compete against and it would be around the same time as when the last film was released.

Warner Bros. Pictures has just revealed a new trailer for director Scott Cooper’s crime drama Black Mass, starring Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Jesse Plemons, Corey Stoll, Rory Cochrane, Sienna Miller and Adam Scott and you can check it out below. In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history. “He could be charming. He could be ruthless. He was like a cobra—you never knew where he could strike,” director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) said previously of Bulger, who was imprisoned with two life sentences in November of 2013. “A lot of people on set knew Whitey intimately. They got chills at [Depp’s] resemblance. Some of them couldn’t even look at him. It’s easy to be the mustache twirling villain but this performance couldn’t be further from that. He is truly gifted.” Black Mass hits theaters on September 18.

This was a great trailer. After watching the first one I thought that this could be the film that brings Johnny Depp back to reality where he can do the roles that made him a star early in his career (Blow, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, Ed Wood, Donnie Brasco etc.) and now after seeing this trailer I am fully convinced this is that career-defining role for Depp. I think the film looks awesome and I'm going to go ahead and put his name in consideration for not only getting nominated, but possibly winning an Oscar if this film lives up to what is being advertised and if it can standout above other performances.

Following the new promo teaser and images earlier today, EW has posted an editorial written by Fantastic Four star Michael B. Jordan. In the article, the actor talks about the controversy surrounding his casting as Johnny Storm, AKA The Human Torch, in the Josh Trank-directed film. Here’s an excerpt: This is a family movie about four friends—two of whom are myself and Kate Mara as my adopted sister—who are brought together by a series of unfortunate events to create unity and a team. That’s the message of the movie, if people can just allow themselves to see it. Sometimes you have to be the person who stands up and says, “I’ll be the one to shoulder all this hate. I’ll take the brunt for the next couple of generations.” I put that responsibility on myself. People are always going to see each other in terms of race, but maybe in the future we won’t talk about it as much. Maybe, if I set an example, Hollywood will start considering more people of color in other prominent roles, and maybe we can reach the people who are stuck in the mindset that “it has to be true to the comic book.” Or maybe we have to reach past them. To the trolls on the Internet, I want to say: Get your head out of the computer. Go outside and walk around. Look at the people walking next to you. Look at your friends’ friends and who they’re interacting with. And just understand this is the world we live in. It’s okay to like it. An origin story said to be inspired largely by the “Ultimate Fantastic Four” comics (the first arc of which was written by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Millar with Joe Kubert illustrating), Fantastic Four offers a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team. The story centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy. “Marvel’s First Family” will include Whiplash‘s Miles Teller as Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), “House of Cards” star Kate Mara as Sue Storm (The Invisible Woman), Fruitvale Station and Chronicle‘s Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) and The Adventures of Tintin‘s Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm (The Thing). Dawn of the Planet of the Apes‘ Toby Kebbell will also star as Doctor Doom alongside Reg E. Cathey (“The Wire”) as as Dr. Franklin Storm and Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) as Harvey Elder, aka The Mole Man. The 20th Century Fox release Fantastic Four features a screenplay by Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and is set to hit the big screen August 7.

These are fantastic comments. Now I'll be perfectly honest, I was a little skeptical at first when the cast was announced and I was one of those guys that said that the Storm siblings either need to be both White or both African-American and not a split. But then I realized that all that matters is how they portray the characters and does the film stick to the core elements of who these characters are. I will say thought once the cast was announced I was fine with who they got to go in this different direction. I've been behind this movie from the start and I'm not jumping off of the train anytime soon.

Variety is reporting that Summit Entertainment parent corporation Lionsgate has revealed that next year’s Now You See Me: The Second Act will not be the final curtain call for the Four Horsemen, as they are already developing a followup. “We’ve already begun early planning for ‘Now You See Me 3,’” said Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer during a company conference call today, in which he also stated he believes part 2 will gross even more than the $350 million 2013’s Now You See Me took in. Apparently this is part of a company strategy to focus on building franchises in the wake of Hunger Games and Twilight running their course. It was announced earlier this week that the two-part Divergent Series: Allegiant has started filming and a follow-up to John Wick is also in the planning stages. Isla Fisher was not able to take part in the second Now You See Me film due to her pregnancy, but hopefully the actress will be able to reprise her role of illusionist Henley Reeves in the third film. One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public’s adulation with their mind-bending spectacles, the Four Horsemen resurface in Now You See Me: The Second Act only to find themselves face to face with a new enemy who enlists them to pull off their most dangerous heist yet. With a screenplay by Ed Solomon and Pete Chiarelli, Now You See Me: The Second Act stars Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg, Lizzy Caplan, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Daniel Radcliffe and Michael Caine. The Jon M. Chu-directed film is scheduled to hit theaters on June 10, 2016.

This is pretty surprising news to hear. I say that because the second film doesn't come out for another year and talks of a third film are already happening. I think it might be a little too early for these talks to begin, but Lionsgate must have a lot of faith in the second film. I'm skeptical for one reason and that is because of director Jon M. Chu. As some of you may know he is the director of the upcoming Jem and the Holograms (as well as two Justin Bieber concert movies) movie that comes later this year and will be one of the worst movies of all-time as well as one of the biggest financial failures of all-time. Of course I'm basing that off of a really crappy trailer, but I don't care. Hopefully the cast of the film takes over and tells him that he can't screw this film up. I really enjoyed the first film and I'm looking forward to the second film, I'm just not happy with who is directing the second film.

Tate Taylor, the filmmaker behind DreamWorks’ Oscar-nominated adaptation of The Help, is reuniting with the studio to bring Paula Hawkins’ runaway best-selling thriller The Girl on the Train to the big screen. DreamWorks picked up the rights in 2014 and had Erin Cressida Wilson (Secretary) begin the adaptation process even before the novel was published in January by Riverhead Books and sold over 2 million copies worldwide. It’s been the #1 book on the New York Times bestseller list for the 17 weeks since its release. The novel is about a woman named Rachel, who recently became divorced and who spends her daily train commute fantasizing about the perfect couple in a house she passes only to one day see something shocking that gets her caught up in a mystery. The film will be produced by Marc Platt and Jared LeBoff for Marc Platt Productions. Holly Bario, president of production at DreamWorks, states in the press release: “With ‘The Help,’ Tate deftly adapted a beloved novel into a compelling film that stayed true to its origin while pleasing fans and moviegoers alike. We are excited to have Tate back at DreamWorks and thrilled that he’s joining us on this journey as we bring another bestseller to theaters.” Taylor, who most recently directed the James Brown biopic Get on Up, which was released by Universal Pictures, adds: “Bringing rich material to the screen in the filmmaker-friendly environment DreamWorks provides is a director’s dream. I’m honored to be a part of this.”

I think this is a great choice. Tate Taylor is an amazing director and so far he is batting a perfect 1,000 when it comes to the films the has directed. The film sounds really interesting and I think he is the perfect choice for the film and it helps that he has worked with a strong female lead in his previous films and I wouldn't be surprised if a few of the actors he has worked with in the past show up in this film as well.

My Review of Poltergeist (2015)

So I recently watched Poltergeist (2015) and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Poltergeist 2015 poster.png

When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever.

This movie is pretty terrible. Now look I'm a huge fan of the original Poltergeist film and I knew coming into this film it wasn't going to be as good as the first film and quite frankly it didn't have to be, but when you remake one of the greatest horror films of all-time you do have to live up to a lot. The film is just a mess all the way around.. None of the big scares are scary and it's predictable and it doesn't really do anything to separate the film from it's predecessor. I was also disappointed in the performances especially from Same Rockwell and Jared Harris who are amazing actors, but they mail in the entire movie. I will say that some of the smaller scares that weren't predictable were actually scary and some moments kept me on the edge of the seat. Plus I'm going to say it one more time, my biggest pet peeve is seeing horror films come out in the summer or spring when it should've come out around I don't know say Halloween. Overall this is really terrible film and to me it actually does hurt the legacy of the original film. I give Poltergeist (2015) a 1 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Poltergeist (2015) what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

                                                                                                                           Jonah Sparks

My Review of Tomorrowland

So I recently watched Tomorrowland and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Tomorrowland poster.jpg

Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (played by George Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (played by Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as "Tomorrowland." What they must do there changes the world-and them-forever.

This was a pretty disappointing movie. I was really looking forward to this film so much that it ended up in my top 10 most anticipated films of  not only the first half of 2015, but for the entire year. One of the reasons why I was looking forward to it so much was because of two reasons. One being director Brad Bird who directed The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and The Iron Giant and I thought that this would be the film that proved he could take on any type of genre and be successful with it and that ends up not being the case. I was also looking forward to the film simply because we all complain that there is nothing original coming out of Hollywood (which is stupid because there is, but a lot of you don't go see them) and this film is possible one of the most original films I've seen in years. The film has a really great story and message, but it changes tones so many times that I didn't really know what I was watching and I just don't think that the message that was used in film should've been in the film and it should've been displayed in a different medium. One of the bright spots of the film was the visuals. It, along with Mad Max: Fury Road, is one of the most beautiful films I've seen in a long time. The performances in the film are pretty great as well and the chemistry between Clooney and Robertson is tremendous, but the real stand-out is Raffey Cassidy and she stole the movie I think she has long and bright future ahead of her. Overall the film has a great story and message that wasn't executed well, but the performances and visuals are enough for you to go see. I give Tomorrowland a 7 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Tomorrowland, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

My Top 10 Comedy Movies of All-Time Part 2

Comedy is a genre of film in which the main emphasis is on humour. These films are designed to entertain the audience through amusement, and most often work by exaggerating characteristics of real life for humorous effect. Films in this style traditionally have a happy ending (the black comedy being an exception). Comedy, unlike other film genres, puts much more focus on individual stars, with many former stand-up comics transitioning to the film industry due to their popularity. While many comic films are lighthearted stories with no intent other than to amuse, others contain political or social commentary. With that being said I'm going to bring My Top 10 Comedy Movies of All-Time. You can see my other list here. These movies are ranked 11-20 so when you see number 5 it is actually number 15. So without further ado...

10 (20). Caddyshack
Caddyshack poster.jpg

The cast tin the film is amazing and it is one of the most quotable comedies of all-time. An elite country club has to deal with a brash new member and a gopher intent on destroying their beloved golf course. Caddyshack has a rating of 76% on rottentomatoes.com.

9. (19) Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
Borat ver2.jpg

This film is flat out hilarious and it introduced us to magnificently talented Sasha Baron Cohen and it has a lot of memorable quotes and scenes. Journalist Borat Sagdiyev (played by Sasha Baron Choen) leaves his native Kazakhstan to travel to America to make a documentary. As he zigzags across the nation, Borat meets real people in real situations with hysterical consequences. His backward behavior generates strong reactions around him, exposing prejudices and hypocrisies in American culture. In some cases, Borat's interview subjects embrace his outrageous views on race and sex by agreeing with him, while others attempt to offer a patriotic lesson in Western values. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and it has a rating of 91% on rottentomatoes.com.

8. (18) Annie Hall
Anniehallposter.jpg

This is considered not only one of the greatest romacne films of all-time but one of the greatest films of all-time. Comedian Alvy Singer (played by Woody Allen) examines the rise and fall of his relationship with struggling nightclub singer Annie Hall (played by Diane Keaton). Speaking directly to the audience in front of a bare background, Singer reflects briefly on his childhood and his early adult years before settling in to tell the story of how he and Annie met, fell in love, and struggled with the obstacles of modern romance, mixing surreal fantasy sequences with small moments of emotional drama. Annie Hall was nominated for 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Original screenplay while wining 4 (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay) and it has a rating of 98% on rottentomatoes.com.

7. (17) American Pie
Group picture of the cast. Alyson Hannigan has a flute in hand.

I love this film and I absolutely love the entire franchise. a group of friends at the end of their senior year make a pact to lose their virginity by prom night. In their outrageous attempts to fulfill this mission, they come to some surprising, hilarious and often touching realizations about themselves, their friendships, their notions of love, romance and their relations with the opposite sex. American Pie has a rating of 61% on rottentomatoes.com.

6. (16) National Lampoon's Vacation
Vacation1983.jpg

This film has shaped and has been a huge influence on a lot of the comedies we see today. Clark Griswold (played by Chevy Chase), an ad exec who becomes consumed with taking his family cross-country to Wally World, a California amusement park. Less a vacation than a descent into a peculiarly American kind of hell, the Griswolds suffer through an endless series of catastrophes, culminating in a run-in with the law. National Lampoon's Vacation has a rating of 95% on rottentomatoes.com.

5. (15) Old School
Old s poster.jpg

This film has a lot of memorable gut-busting moments and it has some very memorable quotes. A trio of twenty something buddies tries to recapture the outrageous, irrepressible fun of their college years by starting their own off-campus frat house. Mitch (played by Luke Wilson), Frank (played by Will Ferrell) and Beanie (played by Vince Vaughn) have all reached a crossroads in their lives. They can choose to be responsible adults, with wives, families and steady jobs--or they can postpone adulthood in favor of the reckless abandon of frat house living with all the fun and none of the education. No contest. Old School has a rating of 60% on rottentomatoes.com.

4. (14) Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters cover.png

This movie is absolutely hilarious and it is easily one of the greatest comedies of all-time. When their government grants run out, the former three go into business as The Ghostbusters. Armed with electronic paraphernalia, the team is spectacularly successful, ridding The Big Apple of dozens of ghoulies, ghosties and long-legged beasties. Tight-lipped bureaucrat Walter Peck (played by William Atherton) regards the Ghostbusters as a bunch of charlatans, but is forced to eat his words when New York is besieged by an army of unfriendly spirits, conjured up by a long-dead Babylonian demon and "channelled" through beautiful cellist Dana Barrett (played by Sigourney Weaver) and nerdish  Louis Tully (played by Rick Moranis). The climax is a glorious sendup of every Godzilla movie ever made-and we daresay it cost more than a year's worth of Japanese monster flicks combined. Who'd ever dream that the chubby, cheery Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man would turn out to be the most malevolent threat ever faced by New York City? Ghostbusters was nominated for two Academy Awards including Best Original Song and Best Visual Effects and it has a rating of 97% on rottentomatoes.com.

3. (13) Young Frankenstein
Young Frankenstein movie poster.jpg

In this spoof of Mary Shelley's gothic tale, the grandson of Victor Frankenstein (played by Gene Wilder), a neurosurgeon, has spent his life living down the legend of his grandfather, even changing the pronunciation of his name. When he discovers his grandfather's diary, he begins to feel differently, and returns to the family castle to satisfy his curiosity by replicating his ancestor's experiments. In the process, he creates one very unique monster. Young Frankenstein was nominated for two Academy Awards including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound and it has a rating of 94% on rottentomatoes.com.

2. (12) Spaceballs
Spaceballs.jpg

Lone Starr (played by Bill Pullman) and his half-man, half-dog co-pilot, Barf the Mawg (played by John Candy), are content to scour the galaxy living the easy life. But they reluctantly come to the rescue when Druish Princess Vespa (played by Daphne Zuniga) is threatened by the evil Lord Dark Helmet (played by Rick Moranis), who wants to steal all of the air from her planet, Druidia. Trapped on a harsh desert world with Vespa and her robot chaperone, Dot Matrix (voice of Joan Rivers), Lone Starr and Barf are helpless to prevent Helmet from kidnapping the girl. But assistance arrives in the form of Yogurt (played by Mel Brooks), a wizard who turns Lone Starr on to a mysterious power known as The Schwartz. Catching up with Helmet just as he's transforming his spaceship into a giant vacuum cleaner in orbit around Druidia, the reluctant heroes stage a dramatic showdown. Spaceballs has a rating of 54% on rottentomatoes.com.

1. (11) Hot Shots: Part Deux
Hot Shots part deux.jpg

This film was one of the last that Charlie Sheen had made while he was in the prime of his movie career. Topper Harley (played by Charlie Sheen), who has retreated to a Buddhist monastery after being dumped by Ramada Rodham Hayman (played by Valerie Golino). In this far-off retreat, the monks have "taken a vow of celibacy, just like their fathers and their fathers before them." But Topper bulks up and goes back into action when his superior officer, Colonel Denton Walters (played by Richard Crenna) is captured by a Saddam Hussein look-alike, missing somewhere between "Iraq and a Hard Place." Topper charges into Iraq (after barreling through a Beverly Hills barbecue) along with sexy CIA operative Michelle Rodham Huddleston (played by Brenda Bakke) in tow, his guns ablazing. Hot Shots! Part Deux has a rating of 59% on rottentomatoes.com.

5-21-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

It’s been nearly five years since Walt Disney Pictures first announced plans for a live-action comedy, Tink, set to follow the adventures of Peter Pan‘s mischievous fairy, Tinker Bell. Although Pitch Perfect 2 star and director Elizabeth Banks was originally attached to headline the project, The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that the very small role has gone to Academy Award winning actress Reese Witherspoon. Finding Dory‘s Victoria Strouse, meanwhile, is attached to provide the screenplay. Created by J.M. Barrie for 1904’s “Peter Pan,” Tink, quite likely the world’s most famous fairy, was originally played onstage by nothing more than a miniature spotlight. She’s best known today, however, for the animated Disney version, who first appeared in the studio’s 1953 feature Peter Pan. Lately, Tink has been the focus of her own direct-to-DVD animated franchise with the latest adventure, Tinker Bell and the Legend of the Never Beast having been released earlier this year. Tink is one of two different big screen Tinker Bell movies in the works. It was announced last fall that Night at the Museum‘s Shawn Levy is developing a still-untitled live action comedy that will star Academy Award nominee Melissa McCarthy as the sprite. Witherspoon will also produce Tink alongside Bruna Papandrea.

This is great casting. As I've said before (Hot Pursuit aside) Reese Witherspoon is one of the best, if not the best actress working in Hollywood today. I think she is the perfect person to play Tinker Bell. However I'm a little surprised that Disney is making a live-action Tinker Bell movie. I mean there is a live-action Peter Pan movie being made, but that is by a different studio and while Peter Pan is under public domain so I think they should make a new live-action Peter Pan film with Reese Witherspoon as Tinker Bell. I love the casting, but not the film.

The upcoming remake of The Crow, set to be directed by Corin Hardy (The Hallow), is, according to Deadline, looking to cast Birdman star Andrea Riseborough as Top Dollar. According to the outlet, the gender-swapped version of the character will serve as the film’s chief antagonist, as the character did in Alex Proyas’ original 1994 adaptation. There, Top Dollar was played by Michael Wincott. Planned as a gritty reboot of the iconic James O’Barr comic book character, The Crow will star Jack Huston (“Boardwalk Empire”) as Eric Draven, a man who returns from the grave as a supernatural antihero on a mission to avenge his wife’s murder, so that his soul can finally rest. “Downtown Abbey” star Jessica Brown Findlay is also attached to play Draven’s murdered girlfriend Shelly in flashbacks. In the original comics, Top Dollar was little more than a common drug dealer, although the character was rewritten in the 1994 film to become the kingpin of a criminal syndicate. The character subsequently appeared on the small screen, played by John Pyper-Ferguson on the television series “The Crow: Stairway to Heaven.” Featuring a screenplay by Cliff Dorfman, the new take on The Crow is produced by Ryan Kavanaugh, Kevin Misher, Jeff Most and the original film’s Edward R. Pressman.

I really like this casting. From what little I saw of her in Birdman she was really good and I think she can play a great villain in The Crow. I like how they are changing the character's gender. Honestly have no problem with that simply because it isn't a central element of the character (a kingpin can be male or female). I'm a huge fan of the original The Crow film and while this film has been through a lot and hopefully it turns out great and does justice to the original film.

With the upcoming Magic Mike sequel, Magic Mike XXL, hitting the big screen in just over a month, leading man Channing Tatum today took to Twitter to share a new poster for the July 1 release and you can check it out below. Tatum joins fellow returning stars Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez and Gabriel Iglesias, who will all be joined by newcomers Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games franchise), Donald Glover (“Community”), Amber Heard (The Rum Diary), Andie MacDowell (Footloose), Jada Pinkett Smith (“Gotham”) and Michael Strahan (“Live with Kelly and Michael”) with Emmy Award winner Gregory Jacobs (Behind the Candelabra), who served as a producer on Magic Mike, directing and producing. Picking up the story three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, Magic Mike XXL finds the remaining Kings of Tampa likewise ready to throw in the towel. But they want to do it their way: burning down the house in one last blow-out performance in Myrtle Beach, and with legendary headliner Magic Mike sharing the spotlight with them. On the road to their final show, with whistle stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways. Magic Mike XXL also reunites Magic Mike producers Nick Wechsler, Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin, with a screenplay by Carolin. Soderbergh, who directed the first film, will executive produce.

Magic Mike XXL

I honestly don't know what to say about this poster. I mean it does capture the what the film is about and it looks like they had good time shooting the photo. I will say though they need to put a shirt Kevin Nash because my god he looks terrible, granted better than I do, but for the love of god just do that for me.

Sony Pictures’ upcoming adaptation of the IDW comic book series “Zombies vs. Robots” has today scored an Academy Award nominated screenwriter. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Craig Borten, who wrote Dallas Buyers Club alongside Melisa Wallack, has signed on to draft the film, which is going by the title Inherit the Earth. As reported earlier this year, Andrew Adamson (Shrek, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe) is attached to direct. Launched in 2005, “Zombies vs. Robots” is officially described on IDW’s site as follows: It’s tech prowess meets undead mayhem! Eisner Award-nominated team of artist Ashley Wood (“Popbot”) and writer Chris Ryall (“The Great and Secret Show”), a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies has only one chance at recovery – a team of robots that must protect and clone a lone surviving human baby. They just need to do this amidst the endless hordes of zombies who have been driven rabid by their frustration at inedible bots and their lust to eat the one living brain left on the planet. Set to be produced by Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, Andrew Form, Dave Alpert and Rick Jacobs, Inherit the Earth is a co-production of Platinum Dunes, Circle of Confusion and IDW Publishing with Sony Pictures set to distribute. Previously, Oren Uziel (the upcoming Kitchen Sink) was attached to script.

This is a great choice to write a film. Now Borten has only done one film (that being Dallas Buyers Club), but he got an Academy Award nomination for that film. I think he has a lot of ability and I'm curious to see how he handles this type of film. Along with this he is writing the script for a John Rockefeller so this guy is going to be around for a long time.

Broad Green Pictures announced today the U.S. acquisition of Brad Furman’s The Infiltrator. Adapted by Ellen Brown Furman from the autobiography by Robert Mazur, The Infiltrator stars Emmy and Golden Globe winner Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad,” Argo) alongside Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), Golden Globe nominee John Leguizamo (Chef), Benjamin Bratt (Traffic), Yul Vazquez (Captain Phillips), and Academy Award nominee Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone). Based on the true story of a fearless operative, the film relates the account of one of history’s largest and most elaborate stings. Set amidst the lavish excess of the 1980’s, The Infiltrator tells the story of undercover US Customs agent Robert Mazur (Cranston) AKA Robert Musella, who became a pivotal player for drug lords cleaning their dirty cash. He traded on mob connections to become the confidant to scores of the international underworld, and the bankers who enabled them. Laying his life on the line, he infiltrated the globe’s largest cartels and discovered just how deep into society their influence extended. The operation reeled in key players in a chain stretching all the way to Escobar. Their arrests would lead to the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, and shake the underground economy to its core. “I’m thrilled to be partnering with Broad Green Pictures,” says Furman. :This project was truly a labor of love for all involved, and I can’t wait for Broad Green, whose passion for film is unparalleled, to bring ‘The Infiltrator’ to a wide audience.” “Brad Furman is a major talent who has brought an exciting and intense piece of U.S history to screen,” says said CEO Gabriel Hammond and Daniel Hammond, Broad Green’s Chief Creative Officer. “We are eager to work with the filmmakers and cast to make sure their vision is realized for the release of this film.” “We are so proud of this movie,” adds Good Films Founder Miriam Segal, “and could not be happier to be partnering with the brilliant team at Broad Green Pictures, whose passion and commitment to excellence will ensure this extraordinary real-life thriller reaches and excites the broadest of U.S. audiences.” The deal was brokered on behalf of the filmmakers by WME, while Dylan Wiley, President of Specialty Releasing and Chris Tricarico, EVP Business Affairs handled for Broad Green. The Infiltrator is produced by Good Films’ Miriam Segal, with Bank Leumi, Good Films and LipSync co-financing.

This is great news to hear. As I always say I love it when I hear about studios picking up films because it gives the people who made the film a chance to show off all of their hard work. The film sounds really interesting and anything with Bryan Cranston has me interested to see.

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen, which of these stories peaked your interest or was there another story that interested you? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

My Review of Poltergeist (1982)

With Poltergeist (2015) being released this weekend, I thought it would be appropriate to review the original film Poltergeist (1982). So without further ado...

The film centers on the Freeling family, a typical middle class family living in the peaceful Cuesta Verde Estates. Steve (played by Craig T. Nelson), has fallen asleep in front of the television, and the dog saunters around the house revealing the other family members -- Steve's wife Diane (played by JoBeth Williams), sixteen-year-old daughter Dana (played by Dominique Dunne), eight-year-old son Robbie (played by Oliver Robins), and five-year-old Carol Ann (played by Heather O'Rourke). Soon strange things begin to happen around the house; the pet canary dies, mysterious storms occur, and Carol Ann is summoned to the TV set, where a strange shaft of green light hits her and causes the room to shake ("They're he-e-ere!"). As curious events continue, Carol Ann is repeatedly drawn to the television, where she begins to talk to "the TV people." Soon Carol Ann is sucked into a closet, disappearing from this reality plane. Unable to find his daughter, Steve consults Dr. Lesh (played by Beatrice Straight), a para-psychologist from a nearby college. Lesh finds that paranormal phenomena is so strong in the Freelong household she is unable to deal with it and sends for clairvoyant and professional exorcist Tangina (played by Zelda Rubinstein) to examine the house in hopes of finding Carol Ann. Tangina makes a horrifying discovery: Carol Ann is alive and in the house, but is being held on another spectral plane.

I really love this film. As you go through the history of horror film this is one that comes up a lot and for very good reasons. It presents a lot of interesting ways to scare you and in a very different and original fashion. I will say however that some of the scares didn't get to me and it got a little predictable at times. I did like the performances in the film and I thought they all had their standout moments and it brought the film full circle. One of the big controversies about the film is who actually directed the film. Some people say that the attached director Tobe Hooper or Stephen Spielberg who produced and couldn't direct due to contract obligations with Universal to not direct any film before production on E.T. began. I personally think they both had a hand in making the film. You can see both directors styles in the film. While I love Spielberg, I personally like Hooper's style more in the film and to me Spielberg's style really hurt the film and it was really hard to figure out the tone of the film. Overall I really enjoy and love this film, but I wish the film would've settled on one tone instead of using two completely different styles. I give Poltergeist an 8.5 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what do you think of Poltergeist (1982), what would you rate it, what did you think of my review and are you excited for Poltergeist (2015)? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

5-20-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Director Antoine Fuqua’s remake of The Magnificent Seven has found its villain today as Variety reports that Peter Sarsgaard (Jarhead, Green Lantern) has signed on to play the story’s chief antagonist. He joins Denzel Washington (who took home an Oscar for Fuqua’s Training Day), Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Chris Pratt, The Equalizer‘s Haley Bennett, Boyhood‘s Ethan Hawke, Elite Squad‘s Wagner Moura, G.I. Joe: Retaliation‘s Byung-hun Lee, “White Collar’s” Matt Bomer and “Marvel’s Daredevil” star Vincent D’Onofrio. Originally drafted by “True Detective” scribe Nic Pizzolatto (since rewritten by The Blind Side‘s John Lee Hancock), The Magnificent Seven will remake the 1960 film directed by John Sturges that itself was inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai. Sturges’ version starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn and Robert Vaughn as a group of disparate gunmen who come together to protect a Mexican village from bandits led by Eli Wallach. It led to a number of sequels as well as a CBS television series. The new film is said to feature a victimized mining town, taken over by a gold baron (Sarsgaard), rather than the Mexican village of the original.

This is terrific casting. Peter Sarsgard is a very talented and vastly underrated actor and I think adding him to this film is a great idea. Os far this cast is absolutely amazing and I think it is going to be a film that we will talk about for the rest of our lives. I am personally all for remakes and I think this one can be better than the last film.

Legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins will rejoin director Denis Villeneuve for Alcon Entertainment’s sequel to Blade Runner, having previously collaborated on 2013’s Prisoners and the upcoming Sicario. The Blade Runner sequel is scheduled to start principal photography in summer of 2016. Hampton Fancher (co-writer of the original) and Michael Green have written the original screenplay based on an idea by Fancher and Ridley Scott with the story taking place several decades after the conclusion of the 1982 original. Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Rick Deckard with Ryan Gosling previously said to be in talks for a role. Alcon co-founders and co-CEO’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson state: “Roger is an extraordinary talent and we are very excited that Denis and Roger have chosen to continue their collaboration in bringing the sequel to Blade Runner to the big screen.” Alcon Entertainment acquired the film, television and ancillary franchise rights to Blade Runner in 2011 from producer Bud Yorkin to produce prequels and sequels to the iconic science-fiction thriller. Yorkin will serve as a producer on the sequel along with Kosove and Johnson. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will also produce. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers. Ridley Scott will also executive produce. Released by Warner Bros., Blade Runner was adapted by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples from Philip K. Dick’s novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” and was directed by Ridley Scott following his landmark Alien.” The film was nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction).

This is fantastic news to hear. I know a lot of you don't know who this guy is, but if you know anything about cinematography then this is guy you should envy. He is one of the top 2 cinematographers of all-time along with Emmanuel Lubezki. The guy does beautiful work with the camera and the last time Deakins and Villeneuve worked together, they made the film Prisoners which was just simply amazing and with this type of film I look for an Oscar to come Deakins's way.

Production is underway for the upcoming Independence Day 2 and much of the cast from the first film is set to return. Among those is actress Vivica A. Fox, who recently offered the closest thing to a synopsis for the sequel that we have:“The aliens are back,” she tells MLive. “And it’s about 15 years later.” Blackfilm also caught up with the actress, who provided an update about production on the film. “I just started this week and walking back on that set and working with Jeff Goldblum and Roland Emmmerich the director, it was like the first film was yesterday. We are so blessed that the audience has been so hungry for this sequel to happen. Unfortunately, Will (Smith) decided that he didn’t want to come back. I’m working with a young up and coming actor named Jesse Usher, who has all the wonderful qualities that will remind you of Will but he’s playing my son. I’m glad that they chose Jesse Usher and Will gave them his blessing when they cast him. So, we’re going to hold it down and the sci-fi audience are so faithful that I think the sequel will be successful.” Fox opened up about where we will find her cahracter in the film, who has abandoned her profession from the first film. “I will not be on the poll. She was a stripper with a heart of gold, and who had said that she was doing it because the money was good. Now she’s a hospital administrator and she’s running the hospital and I’m glad that they moved her character forward as a woman.” Set to hit theaters June 24, 2016 (almost exactly 20 years after the original), Independence Day 2 features a script most recently rewritten by Carter Blanchard. Previous drafts were done by Emmerich and Dean Devlin, and then by James Vanderbilt. Fox is also joined in the film by Bill Pullman, Sela Ward, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner, as well as a cast of franchise newcomers that includes Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Travis Tope, Joey King, and Maika Monroe. The original Independence Day opened on July 3, 1996 and earned an impressive $817.4 million worldwide. Emmerich is also set to produce the sequel alongside Devlin and Harald Kloser.

I'm not surprised to hear this news. I mean with the casting of Jesse Usher it was pretty obvious that Vivica A. Fox would return. I'm still curious as to how they will write off Will Smith's character since he isn't returning. I (like Fox) am glad that they have advanced her character along and I'm interested as to how her character will play into the overall story.

It was revealed back in March that Paramount Pictures is looking at expanding the Transformers cinematic universe. Previously, I Am Legend‘s Akiva Goldsman signed on to work with Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura to create a franchise writer’s room to develop both sequels and spinoff features. Deadline now reveals that that writer’s room today has five new high-profile additions in the form of “The Walking Dead” and “Invincible” creator Robert Kirkman, the Iron Man writing pair of Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, “Fringe” and “Lost” scribe Jeff Pinkner, and X-Men: The Last Stand and The Incredible Hulk‘s Zak Penn. Last year, Paramount released the franchise’s fourth film, Transformers: Age of Extinction, starring Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor. When asked if he’d be back for a sequel, Wahlberg previously stated that he’s contracted for “a couple more.” It is also believed that Bay himself will return to helm Transformers 5 after he completes work on his Benghazi drama 13 Hours. That film, is set to star Pablo Schreiber, John Krasinski, James Badge Dale, David Denman, Max Martini and Dominic Fumusa and is based on Mitchell Zuckoff”s nonfiction account of the 2012 terrorist attack on the US State Department Special Mission Compound in Benghazi, Libya. Age of Extinction grossed over $1 billion at the global box office with all four films combined grossing over $3.7 billion.

This is great news to hear. Look as a lot of you know I absolutely hate the Transformers franchise other than the first film. One of the big problems for me (many others) is the fact there is really no story in any of the films and the same plot has been used in all four films. I think that with adding Kirkman to lead the writing team is a great idea and I think that he can finally help this franchise in the best way possible.

Warner Bros. has set Gavin O’Connor’s The Accountant, starring Ben Affleck, Jeffrey Tambor, Anna Kendrick and J.K. Simmons, for release on January 29, 2016. The Accountant stars Affleck as a mild-mannered accountant who moonlights as a lethal assassin. The January 29 release date was originally being held for a mystery New Line horror film, but that film will now arrive one week earlier, on January 22. The Accountant, then, will face off against Walt Disney Pictures’ The Finest Hours, starring Ben Foster, Casey Affleck, Chris Pine, Eric Bana and Holliday Grainger, as well Kung Fu Panda 3, the third entry in DreamWorks Animation’s hit animated franchise.

I'm a little in between on this news. For one I'm glad that the film is going to be hear within 8 months, but the film is coming out in January where a lot of films go to die. The weekend that it is on however is a pretty stacked weekend and it has the chance to do some serious business if it ends up being good. The film sounds cliched, but with the cast that is apart of the film I think it'll be just fine.
