My Review of It Comes at Night

So I recently watched It Comes at Night and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, the tenuous order a man (played by Joel Edgerton) has established with his wife and son is put to the ultimate test with the arrival of a desperate family seeking refuge. Despite the best intentions of both families, paranoia and mistrust boil over as the horrors outside creep ever-closer, awakening something hidden and monstrous within the man as he learns that the protection of his family comes at the cost of his soul.

This is a really terrifying film. One of the things that make horror films so frightening is having a villain or creature that you can't see mainly because it intensifies the scare even more when you can't see it coming and this has one of the more terrifying villains ever to be put on screen. In recent years, most horror films tend to follow a lot of troupes that we've seen over and over again whilst not making an original film and this film deviates from that trend to bring a really authentic and original film that  is hard to predict when you see one thing and then the opposite happens. The marketing for this film has been pretty misleading and if you've seen the trailers and think this is some type of zombie thriller film then you are wrong and you definitely need to check it out see for yourselves in what you are missing. Trey Edward Shults directed this film so well and to make a film really good within a smaller space than usual is really hard to do but he is able to capture every single emotion we see in the film as well as be able to develop the characters so well that we grow with them and characters make a complete 180 of what they used to be early on in the film that it makes it more emotional when something happens to them. The performances are great and Joel Edgerton continues to show just how good of an actor he truly is and no matter how big or small the film is, he is always giving a great performance. As well with Edgerton, the supporting cast is filled with several unknown actors and they all do so well and that's the great thing about having a small cast in that each character each has their own moment to shine. The one big complaint is that there aren't enough scares in the film to really give you that overly terrified feeling throughout the film and the ending is a little depressing considering what you've already seen and maybe there could have been a more pleasant way to end it. Overall this is a truly fantastic horror film that you should see and don't let the marketing fool you. I give It Comes at Night a 9 out of 10.
