My Review of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie

So I recently watched Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Film poster showing a man in his underwear with a cape on his neck, standing on top of a building. A moon showing a silhouette of an underwear.

George Beard (voiced by Kevin Hart) and Harold Hutchins (voiced by Thomas Middleditch) are two overly imaginative pranksters who spend hours in a treehouse creating comic books. When their mean principal (voiced by Ed Helms) threatens to separate them into different classes, the mischievous boys accidentally hypnotize him into thinking that he's a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants.

This is a really surprisingly good film. The Captain Underpants book series is a really fun one to read if you ever can get your hands on the books and the each have a unique story and the film is no different. If you aren't used to the books, then the entire premise sounds really dumb, but in this day in time when superhero films are the topic of just about every movie conversation, this one stands out by bringing a more childish tone tin the most ridiculous manner possible. One thing that looks absolutely gorgeous is the animation you'd expect nothing different from a studio like DreamWorks who constantly puts out great animated films with clean animation that just looks so great on the big screen. Another thing that works well is the voice cast and they each bring their own personality to each role and makes these characters come to life. There is a lot of tongue-in cheek humor that both adults and children can enjoy without it being too over the top although they do hit on poop and pee jokes a little too much that makes some scenes feel meaningless. The ultimate goal of this film was to set it up as a franchise and it did just that and now the studio can nitpick which stories they want to go with or even make a brand new story with little sprinkles of the books thrown in. Overall the film is a great family film to hold you over for the summer, but there are a few things that can get annoying, but it is a great start to a brand new franchise. I give Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie an 8.5 out of 10.
