My Review of Rules Don't Apply

So i recently watched Rules Don't Apply and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Small town beauty queen and devout Baptist Marla Mabrey (played by Lily Collins), under contract to the infamous Howard Hughes (Warren Beatty), arrives in Los Angeles. At the airport, she meets her driver, Frank Forbes (played by Alden Ehrenreich), only two weeks on the job and also from a religiously conservative background. Their instant attraction not only puts their religious convictions to the test but also defies Hughes' number one rule: no employee is allowed to have an intimate relationship with a contract actress.

This is just a really bad film. Warren Beatty is an all-time great actor and director and he has made some terrific films over the year, but this one has to be his absolute worst. We've seen a lot of interpretations of Howard Hughes and they've all been fairly decent and some have been spectacular, but Warren Beatty just doesn't pull it off and had someone other than him had directed the film, the character could've been better portrayed. It also doesn't help that he wrote the script and usually when you write and direct a film, you often times put your character as the main one and instead Hughes takes a backseat to a lackluster romance. It's not the fault of either Ehrenreich or Collins, but it's due to the poor writing done by Beatty and both of the young stars deliver the best performances possible with what they were given. The visuals are beautiful and ti really does paint a great picture of the late 1950's/early 1960's and you do get a sense of the era and what type of guy Hughes was and how much influence and power he had at that time. One of the reasons the whole story is a mess is that it uses flashbacks in the middle of the film and unlike say Manchester by The Sea, this film doesn't let gain any new knowledge from the flashbacks to help better understand the characters in the present time of the film. The supporting cast is magnificent and full of stars, but none of them really stand out of even get their moment say in a film like Hail Caesar! which had a full cast as well and it was able to balance everyone out enough for you to care for them throughout the film. Overall this film is filled with great performances, but Beatty does way too much to make this film something that it's not and puts too much emphasis on a love story instead of the central figure of the story and it makes for a muddled mess. I give Rules Don't Apply a 3 out of 10.
