5-12-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

20th Century Fox has debuted the first Assassin’s Creed movie trailer, which you can watch using the player below! Underneath, you’ll also find the new poster for the film in the gallery. Michael Fassbender leads the cast of Assassin’s Creed and is joined by Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises, Inception), Michael K. Williams (“The Wire,” Paul Feig’s upcoming Ghostbusters), Jeremy Irons (“The Borgias”) and Brendan Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow). Justin Kurrzel (Macbeth) is directing the film. Based on the Ubisoft game franchise, the Assassin’s Creed movie follows a character by the name of Callum Lynch who, through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, is able to experience the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day. Assassin’s Creed is set for a December 21, 2016 release.

This is a really great trailer. I'm semi-big fan of the video game franchise and I really enjoyed the first few installments, but I just couldn't get into the rest of the games. Everything from the trailer reminded me so much of the game and while that's not a good thing most of the time, this really helps the core audience rest-assured that they are going to stay somewhat truthful to the games while also appealing to a bigger audience. The only thing I can really complain about is the stupid and out of place Kanye song that just takes you out of the trailer, but it more than likely won't be in the film itself so I can breath somewhat of a sigh of relief.

Warner Bros. Pictures has debuted the first trailer for The Accountant, starring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, Jean Smart, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Jeffrey Tambor and John Lithgow. You can watch The Accountant trailer below. In the dramatic thriller, Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is a math savant with more affinity for numbers than people. Behind the cover of a small-town CPA office, he works as a freelance accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. With the Treasury Department’s Crime Enforcement Division, run by Ray King (J.K. Simmons), starting to close in, Christian takes on a legitimate client: a state-of-the-art robotics company where an accounting clerk (Anna Kendrick) has discovered a discrepancy involving millions of dollars. But as Christian uncooks the books and gets closer to the truth, it is the body count that starts to rise. Opening in theaters on October 14, The Accountant is rated R for strong violence and language throughout. Directed by Gavin O’Connor from a script by Bill Dubuque, the film was produced by Mark Williams, Lynette Howell; executive producers Gavin O’Connor, Jamie Patricof, and Marty Ewing.

This was a pretty intense trailer. The trailer had the feel of a superhero film in a way mainly due to the fact that Ben Affleck's character is superior intelligence and the fight scene just had several elements seen in superhero films. This along with Live by Night are two of the films I'm the most excited seeing Ben Affleck in outside of his duties as Batman. I think this film is going to be this years Prisoners or Sicario whereas they get a lot critical praise, but not Oscar praise  which to me would be a shame. Hopefully it's as good as I'm hyping it up to be.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) is in talks to join Chadwick Boseman in the cast of Marvel’s Black Panther. There’s no word in what her character will be in the film though the outlet notes she will be playing T’Challa’s love interest in the film, meaning she could be playing a member of the Dora Milaje. The Dora Milaje are the Black Panther’s elite all-female bodyguards and group of potential queens, one of whom briefly appears in Captain America: Civil War. Creed director Ryan Coogler will direct the film while also penning the script. Production on the movie is set to commence at the beginning of 2017 with a February 16, 2018 release date already set. It’s unclear what other characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe will appear in the film, though Andy Serkis’ Ulysses Klaw, who made his debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron, could appear as the pair have already allegedly crossed paths in the context of the films.

This would be really tremendous casting. Lupita Nyong'o is one of the best actresses working today and to see her join the Marvel Cinematic Universe is something special. It's amazing what winning an Oscar can do for a career and she is the perfect example. as she is now apart of both the Star Wars universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe which is something only Natalie Portman and Andy Serkis can say. She is a great addition and I can't wait to see her in action.

TriStar Pictures has released the trailer for Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, coming to theaters on November 11. You can watch the Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk trailer below! Three-time Academy Award winner Ang Lee brings his extraordinary vision to Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, based on the widely-acclaimed, bestselling novel. The film is told from the point of view of 19-year-old private Billy Lynn (newcomer Joe Alwyn) who, along with his fellow soldiers in Bravo Squad, becomes a hero after a harrowing Iraq battle and is brought home temporarily for a victory tour. Through flashbacks, culminating at the spectacular halftime show of the Thanksgiving Day football game, the film reveals what really happened to the squad – contrasting the realities of the war with America’s perceptions. The film also stars Kristen Stewart, Chris Tucker, Garrett Hedlund, with Vin Diesel, and Steve Martin. Lee used new technology, shooting at an ultra-high frame rate for the first time in film history, to create an immersive digital experience helping him dramatize war in a way never seen before.

This was a really brilliant trailer. When the film says that it s going to basically be the reality of war vs. the perceptions of war, you really get that feel as it goes through some of the flashbacks we'll be seeing in the film. This film is going to be very different than what we are used to seeing out of an Ang Lee film and I'm really curious as to how it all plays out. Who knows, but I think this film is a very early Oscar contender.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Jurassic World co-writer Derek Connolly is set to write the script for Legendary‘s upcoming Pacific Rim 2. Connolly has also written the script for the upcoming Jurassic World sequel in addition to Legendary’s other giant-monster film, Kong: Skull Island. It’s unclear if Connolly will be rewriting the entire film or just pen a new draft of the script originally written by Zak Penn. Marvel’s Daredevil season 1 showrunner Steven S. DeKnight will make his feature directorial debut behind the camera with the sequel. Though plot details are being kept under wraps, the outlet reports a previous draft of the script took place many years after the original film and saw a world where Jaegers were commonplace. Pacific Rim 2 was originally scheduled for release on April 7, 2017 before being pushed to August 4, 2017 and ultimately removed from the calendar altogether. In a statement, Universal declared they were “committed to having ‘Pacific Rim 2” though no new release date for the film has been announced. Pacific Rim hit theaters in summer 2013 and grossed just $101 million at the domestic box office but went on to take in over $411 million worldwide. The original film starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman.

I really like this choice for a writer. I mean he hasn't done much, but his credits are good enough to make me excited for what he wants to do with the film. Zak Penn is a great writer and I think they can both work together well in one using the others ideas to help build the story. A lot of you know my love for Pacific Rim as it was my favorite film of 2014 and I've been dying to see a sequel for a really long time. Hopefully everything can come together and we can get a fantastic film.
