Week in Movie News Review 10-31-16 to 11-6-16

Hello ladies and gentlemen. I'm here to give you a review of this week in movie news bringing the biggest stories of the week with some of my thoughts and opinions. So without further ado...

(NOTE: all of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the new trailer for the highly-anticipated Wonder Woman movie. Featuring plenty of new footage from the Amazon’s first theatrical solo movie, you can watch the new Wonder Woman trailer below. Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman opens in theaters on June 2, 2017. It will be the fourth film in the newly-launched DC Cinematic Universe, following 2013’s Man of Steel and this year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. It will be followed in 2017 on November 17 with the highly-anticipated Justice League movie. Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Robin Wright (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Netflix’s “House of Cards”), Danny Huston (Clash of the Titans, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), David Thewlis (the Harry Potter films, The Theory of Everything), Ewen Bremner (Exodus: Gods and Kings, Snowpiercer), Saïd Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Connie Nielsen (Gladiator, Nymphomaniac: Vol. I) and Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead). The film is being produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder, with Richard Suckle, Stephen Jones, Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns and Rebecca Roven serving as executive producers.

This was a really solid trailer. The idea of a Wonder Woman film has been what every comic book has ever wanted and the fact that we are getting the film next summer is something really hard to believe. as for this trailer, we get a little bit more insight into what the film is about and why Wonder Woman gets involved with this cinematic universe. We still don't know who the villain is which is great because it gives us something to keep building anticipation for as we get closer and closer to the film. I believe the villain is going to be Ares which would make sense and I hope that's the case because I want to see how he will fit into the universe within the time period we are given in this film.

In development for some time, the Freddie Mercury biopic titled Bohemian Rhapsody may finally be headed to the big screen. Deadline reports that the film, set up at 20th Century Fox through New Regency and GK Films, has set Mr. Robot‘s Rami Malek in the Mercury role. What’s more, the update says that X-Men franchise director Bryan Singer is in talks to direct. Bohemian Rhapsody, the most recent draft of which hails from Academy Award-nominated scribe Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything), will tell the story of Mercury and his iconic rock band, Queen. Queen formed in London in the 1970s and is known today for hits like “We Will Rock You,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Killer Queen,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” and many, many more. It hasn’t been specified exactly how much of Queen’s history will appear in Bohemian Rhapsody and there’s a good two decades between the band forming and Mercury’s tragic death in 1991. Plans for a Freddie Mercury biopic have been on the table for years with Sacha Baron Cohen having formerly been named to play Mercury. Directors previously connected to Bohemian Rhapsody include Dexter Fletcher and Stephen Frears. Bohemian Rhapsody is aiming to begin production early next year. Producers include Graham King and Jim Beach, with Denis O’Sullivan serving as executive producer. What’s more, Queen’s own Brian May and Roger Taylor are set to serve as Bohemian Rhapsody‘s music producers.

I love this casting so much. Now while I was really looking forward to Sacha Baron Cohen take on the role of the iconic singer simply because he looked a lot like him, but I think Remi Malek might be the better option. If you know me then you'll know that I am a massive fan of Queen and Freddie Mercury is just an absolute treasure that we lost way too soon and his life is so interesting that a biopic is long overdue. I'm glad that after so many years of developmental hell that we are finally having this film move forward and I cannot wait to see it.

Zack Snyder‘s Justice League has revealed its big bad as TheWrap today reports that Ciarán Hinds has joined the cast of the DC Comics film. He’ll play the superhero ensemble’s chief antagonist, Steppenwolf. According to the outlet, Steppenwolf is a performance capture character and his final look will differ from the version fans already saw in a deleted Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice clip. Created by Jack Kirby, Steppenwolf has been the leader of Darkseid’s army of Apokolips since he debuted in 1972’s “New Gods” #7. A member of the New Gods, Steppenwolf has an extensive history in the DCU including fights with Doomsday, The Flash, and lesser known villains like Clock King. Hinds is known to many as Mance Rayder on HBO‘s Game of Thrones, while his many big screen roles include hits like Munich and Road to Perdition. He also lent his voice to Disney‘s Frozen and played Aberforth Dumbledore (brother to Albus) in the final Harry Potter film.

Fueled by the hero’s restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Justice League sees Bruce Wayne enlist the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions. Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot will be reprising their roles as the DC Trinity, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman in Warner Bros.‘ Justice League, and joining them are Jason Mamoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as The Flash. Heard will debut in this film before moving to the solo Aquaman movie in 2018, with Willem Dafoe appearing as Atlantean Vulko, and J.K. Simmons playing Commissioner Gordon. Directed by Zack Snyder (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Justice League will debut in theaters on November 10, 2017.

This is some really big casting news and a huge announcement. For a long time it has been rumored that Steppenwolf was going to be the villain for the first Justice League film leading up to Darkseid appearing in the sequel. As for the casting, I'm not that familiar with Ciarán Hinds and that's mainly due to the fact that I don't watch Game of Thrones so I've never really seen him act so that would be my only question mark. I mean he's been in a lot of films I've seen, but those were mostly small roles that had little to no impact to the film itself. I think this is a good step forward for DC as they move forward and by the time 2019 rolls around we'll be fully engulfed in their cinematic universe.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Dope director Rick Famuyiwa has exited Warner Bros.’ upcoming The Flash movie, citing “creative differences” with the studio. Famuyiwa boarded the project in June of this year following the departure of Seth Grahame-Smith from the project in April. “When I was approached by Warner Bros and DC about the possibility of directing The Flash, I was excited about the opportunity to enter this amazing world of characters that I loved growing up, and still do to this day,” Famuyiwa said in a statement to the outlet. “I was also excited to work with Ezra Miller, who is a phenomenal young actor. I pitched a version of the film in line with my voice, humor, and heart. While it’s disappointing that we couldn’t come together creatively on the project, I remain grateful for the opportunity. I will continue to look for opportunities to tell stories that speak to a fresh generational, topical, and multicultural point of view. I wish Warner Brothers, DC, Jon Berg, Geoff Johns, and Ezra Miller all the best as they continue their journey into the speed force.”

What remains unconfirmed about this latest development is how it will affect the production schedule of the film, which was set to begin in Spring 2017 for a 2018 release. However, star Ezra Miller has commitments already for next summer, meaning the film could face a substantial delay. Ezra Miller’s version of the Flash has already appeared on the big screen in both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the recent Suicide Squad. He leads a cast that includes Kiersey Clemons (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising) as Iris West, Billy Crudup (Watchmen) as Barry’s father Henry Allen, and Ray Fisher as the superhero Cyborg. Both Flash and Cyborg are also part of Zack Snyder’s upcoming Justice League cast. We’ll get to see both heroes in action alongside fellow Justice Leaguers Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Superman (Henry Cavill) when the film hits the big screen November 17, 2017.

To be quite honest, I'm not all that surprised. When I first heard that Famuyiwa was directing the film, I was skeptical in thinking on how he would handle this film and he started grow on after his appearance at this past years comic-con. Now that he is gone it really puts DC in a tough spot. It's a tough spot becasue this film is going to come out in March 2018 and now they are scrambling to get a director ready to go in the next couple of months to be attached to the film. I don't know if he'll do it or not, but when the film was first announced, I was all for Edgar Wright taking the helm and I think he is in play right now and I hope he does get the job.

Although the first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them won’t hit theaters until later this month, Deadline today brings word of a major development on the Fantastic Beasts 2 front. According to the outlet, Johnny Depp is set to join the sequel’s cast opposite the returning Eddie Redmayne. There’s no word yet on who Depp might be playing in J.K. Rowling‘s Wizarding World, but the original article suggests that we might even catch an early glimpse of his character when the new Warner Bros. Pictures film arrives in theaters November 18. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds. The first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Dan Fogler, Colin Farrell, Jenn Murray, Jon Voight, Carmen Ejogo, Gemma Chan and newcomer Faith Wood-Blagrove. At this time, only Redmayne is confirmed to return for Fantastic Beasts 2, but it’s a pretty safe bet that a few more of the first film’s cast will also appear in some capacity. David Yates will also return to direct. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is being produced by David Heyman, producer of all eight of the blockbuster Harry Potter features; J.K. Rowling; Steve Kloves, who scripted all but one of the Harry Potter films; and Lionel Wigram, who served as an executive producer on the last four installments of the franchise. Rowling herself is supplying the screenplay.

I actually like this casting. Now as some of you may know, I don't like Johnny Depp at all mainly because he plays the same roles over and over again where he gets to play a weird character that often times comes across as very creepy (set Black Mass aside) and he's honestly lost his touch. I'm going to assume he will be doing the same in this film, but when you have a director like David Yates at the helm, I think this could be a massive turn for him in his career. I'm very curious as to who he will be playing in the film and for the franchise as a whole and I think this will bring a lot of attention for the franchise by casting someone of his stature.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that a Starship Troopers reboot is in development at Columbia Pictures and writers Mark Swift and Damian Shannon have been hired to pen the script. Shannon and Swift are most well known for writing the 2003 hit Freddy vs. Jason and the 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th. Their next project will be the big screen reboot of Baywatch due out net summer. “For the record, we think Verhoeven’s version is amazing and we aren’t trying to redo it,” the pair wrote on Twitter. “Will talk more about it soon, but we’re excited!” The outlet reports that they will be going back to the original basis for the film, the 1959 novel by Robert A. Heinlein. Fast & Furious producer Neal H. Moritz will produce the feature alongside Toby Jaffe. The two of them previously produced the remake of another Paul Verhoeven film, Total Recall. The original Starship Troopers was released in 1997 and starred Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Clancy Brown, and Michael Ironside as soldiers fighting an alien race of bugs. Though a critical flop and a mild box office success upon release, the film garnered a cult following through the years and even earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects, losing out to James Cameron’s Titanic. The series went on to have three direct-to-video sequels as well. A reboot was previously in development with Thor and X-Men: First Class screenwriters Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz, though that version never materialized.

This is really great news to hear. Starship Troopers is a film that I love so much and it is one of my guilty pleasures. It's a pretty silly film, but there are a lot of great moments and some really funny and very corny scenes. They have released a couple of sequels since the original films release and they were nowhere near the quality of the first film. I think with today's technology and some better storytelling that this film can be really great. O also hope that they can bring back some of the original cast back in some capacity just for nostalgic purposes.
