My Review of Doctor Strange

So I recently watched Doctor Strange and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Doctor Strange, wearing his traditional costume, coming out from a flowing energetic portal, and around him the world and New York turning around itself with the film's cast names above him and the film's title, credits and billing are underneath.

Dr. Stephen Strange's (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) life changes after a car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he looks for healing, and hope, in a mysterious enclave. He quickly learns that the enclave is at the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying reality. Before long, Strange is forced to choose between his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.

This is a really solid film. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is an ever-expanding universe in a lot of different ways and every now and then we get introduced to a new character and it helps keep it fresh and Doctor Strange does just that. It's a different type of film we are used to seeing in the MCU and it's all credited to director Scott Derrickson. He just brings a whole different atmosphere that we aren't used to seeing from him as we accustomed to see him direct horror films and for him to be able to step out of his comfort zone is a real accomplishment for him. Benedict Cumberbatch is the perfect choice to play Doctor Strange as he just has the look and charisma of the character and he portrayed him in a way to where he is the magical version of Tony Stark in the sense of their attitudes and the technology they use. The supporting cast is remarkable and it might be the best supporting cast ever in a MCU stand-alone film and they all just bring a perfect balance to the rest of the film.

The visuals are off the charts and are just absolutely beautiful and it's a film that you should defiantly check out in 3D just to get the full perspective of the film and truly appreciate it for what it is and they are easily the best visual effects ever seen in an MCU film. The biggest problem with the film is the story and it just felt like a very generic film with a pretty predictable plot with shoehorned ending that felt rushed. Speaking of that, the entire film felt rushed after the first act and you never really can grasp onto what is going on and to even back up the statement of the film being rushed is the fact that the runtime is a 115 minutes which is much shorter than what we are used to when seeing a comic book film. With that being said it does give you enough to where you can see that it is connected to the rest of the MCU and it plants a lot of seeds for the future. Another thing that doesn't work well at all is the comedy and all of the jokes just felt forced and it seemed like the writers were just really trying too hard to get you to laugh. Overall this film is fun with some fabulous visuals and terrific performances, but a rushed story or a lack thereof really doesn't allow to enjoy the film as much as you would want to. I give Doctor Strange an 8 out of 10.
