My Review of Hacksaw Ridge

So I recently watched Hacksaw Ridge and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

The true story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss (played by Andrew Garfield), who won the Congressional Medal of Honor despite refusing to bear arms during WWII on religious grounds. Doss was drafted and ostracized by fellow soldiers for his pacifist stance but went on to earn respect and adoration for his bravery, selflessness and compassion after he risked his life -- without firing a shot -- to save 75 men in the Battle of Okinawa.

This is just an absolutely perfect film. Mel Gibson is a amazing director and in every film he's directed (except The Man Without a Face), he's been able to bring something real to the film and make it so impactful. He doesn't hold back when it comes to violence because what is the point to hide the truth from people on how sickening an act can be. In this film you see a lot of violent moments and some pretty gory ones as well, but they serve the story well and they aren't just in there for the heck of it. Gibson just paints a really bleak picture of what World War II was like and you just feel like you are there with these characters on the battlefield. When Oscar nominations roll around, Gibson deserves to be nominated for Best Director, but his past history hurts him, but some people need to look past the outside activity and appreciate the work done for this film. Speaking of appreciating something, Andrew Garfeild gives a very special performance that puts ihim right into the hunt for the Best Actor race at next years Oscars and he just embodies Desmond Doss and you really just feel everything he feels within the film and to be able to connect to someone so easily is something that is very hard to do. Another thing that is hard to do is have a supporting cast that can work well together no matter who is on screen with each other.

You're able to see unexpected and fantastic performances from guys like Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington and Luke Bracey who are all just amazing and it's something we've never seen out of any of them and it was pretty special to see. The best supporting performance comes in the form of Hug Weaving who is so used to playing sort of the same character in every one of his films and he often comes across as stiff, but in this film he just pours out so much emotion that it makes you interested in the character and with the performance, I wouldn't be surprised to see him nominated for Best Supporting Actor. The film takes you on such an emotional journey that you will feel every type of emotion possible and by the end of the film you can be an emotional wreck but in a very good way. It's a very beautiful film and all of the battle scenes just look so authentic and again it goes back to the directing of Mel Gibson. Overall this is a perfect war film that ends up being a great story with a character you can get behind and believe in throughout the film and it is one of the best films of the year. I give Hacksaw Ridge a 10 out of 10.
