My Review of The Edge of Seventeen

So I recently watched The Edge of Seventeen and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Everyone knows that growing up is hard, and life is no easier for high school junior Nadine (played by Hailee Steinfeld), who is already at peak awkwardness when her all-star older brother Darian (played by Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend Krista (played by Haley Lu Richardson). All at once, Nadine feels more alone than ever, until an unexpected friendship with a thoughtful teen (played by Hayden Szeto) gives her a glimmer of hope that things just might not be so terrible after all.

This is a really pleasant and very fun film. Coming of age films are often times hard to do because you have to make your characters relatable to a current generation and how they feel about certain things going on around them. You get that in this film and it helps when you have a stellar performance from Hailee Steinfeld who has come so far since her role in the updated remake of True Grit and she just commands the screen every time she's onscreen and if it weren't for such a crowded year for female performances she might've been worthy of an Oscar nomination. Not only does this film relate to a current generation, but it also can relate to an older generation as there are certain moments that happen in this film that make it feel like a nostalgia trip. Humor is another key to make a coming of age film work because there are several moments throughout a person's life that are hilarious and there are some really funny moments in this film and some just seem so unbelievable and there are some jokes that don't hit as well as they should've, but they were still good attempts. Going back to the performances, the supporting cast is really strong and both Blake Jenner and Woody Harrellson are just fantastic in this film and they really help give the film life along with Steinfeld. There are also a few emotional moments and while some genuine and sincere, most feel melodramatic and just forced and it can be overwhelming. Overall this is a solid film with a lot of laughs and tears that feels genuine and sincere with some fabulous performances that rival some of the best of the year. I give The Edge of Seventeen a 9 out of 10.
