My Review of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk

So I recently watched Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Nineteen-year-old private Billy Lynn (played by Joe Alwyn), along with his fellow soldiers in Bravo Squad, becomes a hero after a harrowing Iraq battle and is brought home temporarily for a victory tour. Through flashbacks, culminating at the spectacular halftime show of the Thanksgiving Day football game, what really happened to the squad is revealed, contrasting the realities of the war with America's perceptions. Based on the novel by Ben Fountain.

This might be one of the biggest disappointments of the year. Ang Lee is a remarkable director and his passion for filmmaking is second to none. He has a certain visual outlook for each one of his films to make them the most appealing for the setting he is using in every film. In this film he is tackling a war film and to make the action seem more real, he decided to film it in 60 fps (frames per second) which makes the film move so seamlessly and end the end it actually makes the film hard to watch. At it's core this film is pretty emotional as you on this journey with Billy Lynn as he goes through all of these harsh realities of war and the long-lasting facts war can have on someone. But the only thing that appears on the surface is a just big mess of a film. The visuals are nice and they are a different change of pace for the war scenes, but when running at 60 fps during non war scene, it just makes it hard to watch because everything is just moving so fast when it is completely unnecessary. The story isn't really the strongest either as it build suspense leading to ever asking question of "what happened over there"? when it is obvious as to what happened and it just doesn't lend itself well to the big screen from the book. Performance wise, the film is full of pretty solid ones and surprisingly the best one comes from Kristen Stewart as she brings much more emotion than we are used to seeing from her and she's in line to be nominated for an Oscar if other performances don't meet expectations. Overall this is a film that could've been much better than it was, but Ang Lee gets a little too ambitious and over complicates a simple war drama. I give Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk a 4 out of 10.
